Interesting to build the intro decks as monocolor. Haven't seen many monocolor decks around.

As a new player should I pick these up or the Ixalan set?

The single color mana base appeals to me. So many pre con sets have lots of colors.

Ixalan commanders all look pretty clear to use with the only dog in the set being Ahoy Matey's.

Now this new Foundation set is out. Is it too simple or under powered? Not enough to grow into?

Or is it about on par with Ixalan?

I have picked up the foundation Black deck and it is decently strong, higher bracket 2 from my limited rounds. The deck is very obvious in how it functions, but upgrade wise it doesn't have as much potential as eg the reality fracture precon. Most of the high synergy cards are already in the deck, but you can still improve it many ways, for example you can build some more on the burn aspects with something like Blood Artist. Also the foundation commanders are way cheaper of course. I recommend taking a look at the edhrec.com articles of the precons, they have some decent overview on them
