Zach Cregger's highly acclaimed Resident Evil movie had another strong showing at the box office for its second weekend, propelling the film to break another franchise record. It already broke the record for biggest opening weekend for the franchise, and now the movie has made more than $100 million domestically.

That's a new record for the franchise–before this, the biggest success domestically for the franchise was 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife ($60 million). Globally, Resident Evil has now made $196.5 million against a reported $75 million production budget (not counting marketing costs).

The highest-grossing Resident Evil movie globally is Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which made $312 million worldwide. Time will tell if 2026's Resident Evil will catch up.

I've seen it myself, and would definitely rate it as a pretty good film! There's some back and forth about whether or not it's connected "enough" to the franchise and what makes a piece of media, well, Resident Evil. Personally, I thought it was just as well connected as any side-game or, like, RE7.

I like most of the resident evil movies. Always have. Watching the new one this weekend.

I saw the movie a couple days ago and had an absolute blast, but I also dont especially care if it's faithful to the canon of the games. Not every story about Racoon City needs to feature Chris, Leon, or Jill.

The one thing that did surprise me is that they had to remove jokes from the movie. Considering how funny it is in its current form, I'm wondering what kind of absolute clownshow it was before.

That got me too, lol, it definitely leaned hard on comedy-horror and it was apparently even more comedy before! I'd love to see what they cut. Maybe they'll give us a release with lots of features one day including out-takes and director's commentary and some of the cut content

Not every story about Racoon City needs to feature Chris, Leon, or Jill.

I mean, a couple of the (live action) movies have featured characters named Jill and Wesker and all, but none of them have been faithful to anything... We haven't had any story like that.

I forgot the Netflix series. Didn’t it have Colin Salmon?

No wait, Lance Reddick was the dad. Colin Salmon was in the movies.

"the dad" is such a funny way to refer to his character, lol.
