You need a VPN that you trust. They act as a middle man between you and the Internet.

It depends on the country. Some countries don't give a shit about piracy.

Canada is like that. IIRC the maximum fine you can get for piracy is $5,000, meaning it's pretty much not worth it for any company to come after you. If you live in Canada and use a VPN you're pretty much golden, but I also know people here who don't even bother. They get a letter once in a while from their ISP and they just ignore it and nothing ever happens. One of my friends called their ISP to complain and told them to stop sending letters, and they said sorry they have to but if you seed a little bit less then they won't have to send them lol.

He didn't state what country, and weather they care about piracy is kind of irrelevant. You have a right to chose who you trust. I know I for sure don't trust my ISP

It's pretty relevant, actually. It's nice when you have choice. Not every ISP in my country is a big-name corporate shitbag (despite the best efforts and constant lobbying of said big-name corporate shitbags), and they are allowed equal-ish access to the last mile communication networks at (arbitrarily inflated) wholesale prices. It's still worth the price, though. We even have some internet co-ops running their own fiber. And if they don't care about piracy, and you trust them to stay that way, then what's the trouble? Yes it is hard to gauge who to trust, but that's the game we have to play.

which is good for piracy and privacy and speed?

I personally use Private Internet Access but I have mixed opinions. I can say they have a history of privacy protection but like any company that could change. Their speeds are also a inconsistent. I don't have experience with other vpn's

As others said get a VPN (depending on where in the world you are this might not be that important if you're country doesn't care about western copyright mafia much) and then check out:

If you're only talking about the download process, and you are downloading at home, then a trustworthy VPN is the (only?) way to go. I'd look into Mullvad or IVPN.

If you are also talking about other processes surrounding downloading, such as registration, creating accounts, communicating with people over the Internet, use fake names ( https://www.scifiideas.com/... ), e-mail aliases ( https://simplelogin.io/ ) and respectable DNS providers ( https://quad9.net/ ).

Mullvad is unfortunately run by fascists so a bad choice if you're not one.

I switched away from Mullvad because of that. I waited a bit for their response before deciding, but I found their eventual response pretty wishy-washy. Their counter-argument was:

It was a private donation from Daniel the individual. Mullvad or its parent and sister companies did not endorse and were not involved in it.

But his personal money still comes from the company, so if I continued to send Mullvad money I'd know it was still indirectly going to the Örebro party, whose leader called immigrants "parasites", which (as an immigrant myself, albeit not to Sweden) is not acceptable to me.

If it's just a media file it should not be able to access anything except for extremely unlikely scenario. If it's an application like a game it's different and the solution depends on your OS.

Also tuta and proton work with tor:
