Good replacement for PocketBook Basic Lux2 ?

12 days ago by tracyspcy to c/ereader_community

I have no idea how or when, but somehow I broke my e-reader's screen after almost 6 years of active usage.

I was very satisfied with simplicity of the PocketBook lux2 and now I need to find a good replacement.

A quick search on the internet revealed that the industry unfortunately moved towards touchscreens , which frightens me....

My ideal e-reader:

  • 6 inch screen,
  • physical buttons,
  • no touch screen,
  • ideally without backlight, but if it has, no big deal
  • same open as PocketBook - so I can read books from my library without any stores, drm checks etc...

Why don't I simply buy the current PocketBook Verse ? It is 50% more expensive than my old model without any improvements, with freakishly small buttons and it looks much thicker than lux2.

So any recommendations will be appreciated!

I've yet to own one but I've had my eye on the XTEINK devices and I've only heard good things. They're quite a bit smaller than 6 inches but most of them have no backlight or touch screen. I understand when people prefer the tactile feeling of buttons over a touch screen but you're the first to say you experience fear. Can you elaborate on that?

As for touch screen , I expect it to be clumsy considering eink displays refresh rate .. so consequences of false touch is neglectible on other display types, but it should be annoying on eink .

As for Xteink , I’m not buying this hype since I don’t see any value for me here : tiny screen and fragile as hell while price is close to a kindle. It promotes as a pocket reader , while tons of posts with broken screens and following comments like “never put it to pocket “ or “never use it without protective case”. So, no thanks …

If to accept fate, then among touch screen readers kindle 2024 is the cheapest one . Is it a lot of hassle with it, considering I don’t have a kindle account and never going to buy any books there ?

Edit: pocketbook basic lux2 on eBay goes for same price as amazon kindle 2024 . And kobo is 2x that price .

For just a little bit more, there's the Open Book Touch? I think it meets most of the criteria other than being touchscreen based, which I'm not thrilled about either. In every other way it's pretty cool. If you put it on wifi, it has a webui to upload books to. No accounts, no DRM of course since it's open source, has backlight but it's optional etc.

Hm … sounds interesting , still price is higher than current kindle. Do you have real life experience with it? Does it have offline dictionary?

Upd: watched the video - it seems it has some dictionary. The problem is that it will be shipped in mid 2027 :)

No experience with it unfortunately. Even if it were already released, I can't afford an ereader... But if I had the money, this is the one that seems most promising. Otherwise, what's available right now really doesn't look that great to me lol.
