This is giving me a flashback to 10 years ago watching Bojack Horseman flash back 10 years to 2006. That was a good flashback.

Now that you mention it it's weird being of an age where characters flashback to themselves as kids, and it's an era I know...

Had this conversation with a kid a while ago:

Kid:β€œDid they have color back then?”
Me: β€œWhen?”
Kid:”Back in the 90s”

Next time, look up β€œMemphis Group” and show kids the over-stimulating chaos that dominated at the time (especially on Nickelodeon.)

Are you quoting Nick in New Girl? He said that exact line in an episode I watched a couple nights ago.

Still feels weird to me that it's the 2020s. I mean like, that's the future! Somewhere we got there without a time machine!

Your flesh vessel is a time machine. It takes you forward around 60s every minute!

In my sci-fi time travel concept I call that "the speed of time" - the rate at which the universe can change. One consequence of it is that if you go back 100 years, kill Hitler and return to now, history isn't suddenly different because Hitler died in 1926. Because the changed events of 1926 are propagating forward through the timeline at the same speed as normal change. If you wait 10 years and explore the past again, he's dead from 1926 to 1936, because the change has propagated forward for 10 years. After 1936 he's alive, and history is unchanged.

Love that idea! Kind of like speed of light propagation but for time - haven't come across that before. Do you know if any other sci-fi has explored that, other than your own?

Thanks, and no I've never seen it any sci fi I've read. The inspiration is that I don't find the Sliders concept satisfying - where there are infinite timelines spawned by decisions we make - because it means time travelers can never really save anyone or stop disasters. Say Steve the time traveler kills Hitler and prevents the Holocaust - this creates a new timeline but doesn't help anybody in all the other timelines.

It gets more complicated.

In my single timeline model, actions of time travelers don't spawn new realities or new timelines. The consequences proceed forward at the normal speed of time it. But the changes aren't exactly permanent. When the consequences of Steve killing Hitler in 1926 have propagated for 100 years (from Steve's POV), the leading edge reaches 2026. Steve has now grown up in that altered band of time, so he has never heard of Hitler and has no reason to kill him. When the moment in 2026 when he travelled back is overtaken by the new history he created, the timeline in 1926 doesn't get changes, and normal history moves forward with Hitler alive - seemingly undoing his accomplishment. But not really - the 100-year band of altered time is still there, moving forward at the speed of time. Renormalized time moves along behind it at the same speed for 100 years. When it reaches 2026 Steve has now grown up in the normal version of history, knows about Hitler, and goes back and kills him, starting a new band of altered history as before.

The two 100-year long bands of history alternate through time like a dotted line. More complexity is introduced as more people figure out time travel. Eventually the timeline becomes a chaotic mess - known only to time travelers who can visit multiple points and observe the differences. Ordinary people are completely unaware of the confusion because the world they know moves through time at the same speed as they do. That's is one of my favorite features of this idea - it could be the real deal and we wouldn't notice.

20 years ago, I was a year away from graduating high school. I was looking so forward to getting free of the Monday-Friday system that made me feel like a rat trapped in a never-ending spinning wheel.

Now if I stop running, I lose everything. We’re all trapped in this wheel til we die.

Good luck. ❀️
