Report: Cancelled Perfect Dark Project Over 2 Minutes of Gameplay Surfaces Showcasing New Zones and Combat

5 days ago by Carighan Maconar to c/games

Last year, we reported on gameplay details and screens for The Initiative's Perfect Dark reboot, which was unfortunately canned by Microsoft. Today. we unearthed more about the project and its…

It's fascinating to see some of the scenes. They were clearly internal testing/debugging footage (like one scene is just repeatedly shooting the same gun at the same door, I suspect because someone was creating footage about impacts not being rendered) but it's soooooo cool.

Wish I we got something new with Perfect Dark. :<

You know, game projects are killed all the time, sometimes for good reasons...

But this was "the Initiative", Microsoft's "unlimited resource", "quadruple A" studio, that was meant to redefine videogame standards no matter the cost. Really, that was what they said back when they announced it. And they shut it down before it could release anything.

They deserve all the ridicule they can get. Also the hate for all the studios they routinely acquire and kill, even when the ones that were actually successful.

The best game is the unreleased one, as they only exist in the best system: our imagination.

I didn't have much faith in it, honestly. The demo they showed us several years ago was smoke and mirrors because even after a long development period, they didn't have a vertical slice that was anywhere near ready, and I've got no reason to believe that any large publisher would make a shooter like they used to. Do you think we'd have gotten split-screen and deathmatch in this game, or do you think they'd have some kind of live service multiplayer? Even a Free Radical run by members of the original team couldn't make a TimeSplitters game when given the resources to do just that; they tried to make something that looks like Fortnite, just like everyone else, before it too got cancelled.

The footage looks in a surprisingly advanced stage of development.

The 360 reboot was such fucking trash tho.... Why would you expect any better from a reboot now? (If it hadn't been cancelled)
