The 16 donors, whose ranks included Bay Area investor John Doerr and Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, gave a total of $44.5 million to the group, Building a Better California, between Sept. 29 and Oct. 2, according to the committee’s filings.

Spearheaded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin, the PAC [worth $248 million] has almost single-handedly financed the opposition to California Proposition 40, which would levy a one-time wealth tax of 5% on billionaires to cover federal cuts to healthcare funding

Which as described here by Gabriel Zucman, would bring it back to where it was 31 days ago

The support side raised $31 million while the opposition side raised $259 million as of Oct. 2, 2026.

I work with kids and they will often do more work to get out of doing something than the original task would have required. Assuming these guys are brighter than a 4-year-old, imagine how much they think they'll save by donating a quarter billion dollars!!! Then think of all the things that money could have been used for that would have been better than buying a politician.

Sigh. That’s like 1000x what I’ll make in my entire fucking life. And they’re spending that on preventing giving a fair share? Fuck these morons.

I’m guessing the amount these people are giving to put down the initiative is more than they will actually pay for the tax. Sympathy over here couldn’t be lower and I voted for this so hard already.
