First of all, love the amount of weird detail on this one. Like everywhere I look there's more to see but also it just gets me more lost.

Second, the style reminds me of something... maybe KSBD?

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I appreciate it, and it helps me improve. I had something like Lara Croft, Indiana Jones, or the Monkey King in mind when I created this. I really wanted to keep the wealth of detail, but I probably shouldn't have added any more than that.

It might help if I used light and shadow to guide the viewer's eye toward a smaller section of the image. I actually tried to do that here by highlighting the central entrance using dark values. The shadows and values could have been lighter as they moved toward the edges of the piece. I could have been a bit bolder there.

I think one pitfall for me was applying the initial gray tone across the entire image and then gradually adding shadows and dark values. It would have been better to first shape the lighting and shadows in the central area to my satisfaction before working on the rest. That way, I would have already established the darkest tone in the center to use as a reference point. Perhaps it looks familiar to you because the central figure above the entrance portal looks like Bowser from Super Mario Kart—though I didn't notice that myself until afterwards 😅.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply the "getting lost" was a bad thing, per se -- I like the piece because there's always more to see everywhere I look even if there's no singular focal point.

Wrt light and shadow, I think maybe you have the opposite problem -- with the big faces being brighter, my eyes were immediately drawn to them and it wasn't until a second pass that I had noticed the figure whom I assume is Sun Wukong. (Also, from a more scientific point of view, faces tend to draw the eye so all those statues' faces automatically have more magnetism than the less-defined humanoid shape in front and below.) It might have been more effective to have a "light source" emanating from the doorway in the middle. But take any of my advice with a grain of salt, I'm not a visual artist and lack a lot of the vocab to even express what I can see as a layman.

Perhaps it looks familiar to you because the central figure above the entrance portal looks like Bowser from Super Mario Kart

Oh, huh, you're right. Happy little accidents and all that <3
