It's kind of the goal in this case. Balancing between making gas exports for Russia harder and less rewarding, while maintaining some import to EU somehow so EU citizens don't freeze and economy keeps producing. It's more a political geopolitical game than a capitalist one in this case.

I think the bigger issue than the route is that countries reselling will hold back supply when push comes to shove. Turkey or India aren't going to send diesel to Europe when their own economies need it.

This also happens the other way around. It is now prohibited to sell lot of industrial goods to russia, so the goods are sold to indian companies who then will sell them to russia.
