Proton is working on a beta for Drive on Linux:
We are working towards releasing a beta of the official Proton Drive app for Linux. The initial launch will likely consist of our headless daemon mode only, meaning you’ll have a sync engine running that keeps a configurable list of directories up to date the same way it does on Mac and Windows.

Yuuuuup, exactly
I just switched from G drive to Proton Drive, and did it right after they released the proton-drive cli for linux, and it works quite well so far. I haven't had any issues, but I frontloaded all the processing so that all proton-drive has to worry about is the files that are in its own folder, as I have it isolated from the rest of the system.
I've just been using the CLI for scripted CRON backups, working as intended.
At one point they did a big blog post about why Proton Drive for Linux has taken so long.
It basically boiled down to "the clients for Windows/Mac are so poorly written, they are barely working and we spend all our time trying to keep them working. There's no way we can handle a Linux client as well unless we rewrite everything to make it actually ok".
They were trying to rewrite at that point, to one decent shared codebase. I guess it's progressing ok, if slowly.
They were half arsing linux a couple of years ago when I walked away from them, and had being doing so quite some time prior to that, putting stuff on the road map, and then just leaving it there.
The success of protons marketing has made them the 'privacy' choice for people who cannot be bothered looking into things further = they must have a ton of customers by now, and should be very profitable, so can they still legitimately get away with suggesting they are just a small company and can't fix everything... while they still keep releasing new products? (assuming they still are doing that)
The have released an MIT license Drive SDK.

So GNOME and KDE should be free to implement vfs backends directly.
FINALLY. A Linux Drive client has been my most wanted feature especially with how much storage has built up over the years. I have a daily CLI cron job syncing now but it's clunky; a proper daemon to monitor for changed files to sync is what I want.
