Why South Korea has fallen out with Ukraine but seeks reconciliation with North Korea: Korean expert explains

a day ago by supersquirrel to c/ukraine

Just two weeks ago, relations between Ukraine and South Korea seemed almost trouble-free. Russia and North Korea were deepening their military cooperation, North Korean soldiers were fighting against Ukraine, and Kyiv and Seoul appeared to have an increasing number of shared security interests.

South Korea is mad because Ukraine sent 2 North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea.

That does not sound like people who seek reconciliation with them if being forced to spend time with two of them sparks a multinational dispute.

They are mad, as Ukraine announced that publicly, as this can be effectively a death sentence for their remaining family.

Did they announce the names? I only remember them saying that two will be transferred, not who specifically.

Rules:

  1. No sympathy with the enemy or its collaborators. Russian and North Korean soldiers are fascists committing a genocide. Remember that.

  2. Objective and factual reporting from the battlefield, parliaments, etc. is encouraged, even if it's about bad news for Ukraine.

  3. Insulting Putin and his cronies (Orban, Trump, Musk,...) is absolutely fine but don't use homophobic or similar language against them. Members of the queer community don't deserve to be compared to that scum. Also: Putin disciminates against gay people. If you do as well, you're part of the problem.

  4. Don't insult or use overly harsh language against other commentators.

  5. Don't submit direct links to Twitter/X and Truth Social posts. You may: Post a screenshot + quote, do a full quote and name the author, direct link to a proxy service like ThreadReaderApp.com or Nitter, deep link an image embedded in a tweet because Lemmy will cache a copy.

  6. Don't just complain about paywalls. If you encounter one, be a sport and link to an archived version instead. Use Firefox + Cookie AutoDelete + uBlock Origin with the annoyances filters enabled and https://filterlists.com/... to avoid encountering many in the first place.
