Don't most benefits that you mention apply to basically all debit cards of any bank?

Yes, but (someone actually mentioned it) it acts as a buffer to my debit card. Im using it also cause im about to start traveling alot, its cheaper to hold different curriencs and easier to carry it instead of carrying a buttload of cash and looking hella suspecious.

I mean why not just have a bank account with less money in it if you have a lot of money needing to be protected from "hacking". I'm not sure how this is different.

I use a credit card for everything and then pay it off right away. But I realize there are places where you still need to primarily use cash. But I don't have much cash in my checking account anyway. Most extra cash I use to pay down higher interest debt rather than keeping it in low interest checking or even savings. But what savings I do have is in a separate bank that has good rates for savings but not as good checking account options. And I don't have a debit card for that account.

For online purchases I'm not sure I can trust, my credit cards have virtual account numbers, and for things like mass transit I never use a card directly, I have a transit card that has a wallet and that is used for tap to pay. I also use GrapheneOS, so I can't use tap to pay but Google Wallet or Apple Pay can offer similar buffers, although you're giving your purchase data to them to sell instead of just your bank to sell it.

Not seeing any major advantages to any kind of buffer type accounts and there are lots of disadvantages to a lot of these types of systems like sometimes your money gets shifted around to different banks in the background and if one of them has an outage or goes bankrupt your money is not FDIC protected while in transit or in some of these accounts.

I could do that, but its still tied to my bank account if i use the same bank, unless i use a different bank. I got really interested in Wise cause on how easy it is to move and hold foreign currency. You got your risk of that other account be tampered with too. Im still learning on what to use since I dont want to carry my main debit card.

Yeah I guess my bank offers lots of free foreign ATM locations and low cost currency exchange, so that's not a big deal for me. And with how many times I've seen stories of people losing large sums money to failed institutional transfers with companies of this nature (in which cases the money is temporarily not FDIC insured), And as long as the transaction is through credit transaction not a pin based one and I don't use my pin anywhere untrusted or reuse the same pin for multiple purposes like a gym lock, my phone lock, or something, the transactions are usually reasonably well protected from fraud by the bank and Visa/MasterCard/etc. I just don't see a good benefit to risk ratio with this one or any similar services so far. The credit card means a little less risk since no debit purchases. But I do still carry a single debit card for emergencies since credit card cash advances are ridiculously expensive. And since there's no such thing as privacy with electronic transactions, but I consider the tradeoff between risk of carrying cash to be less worth it considering the convenience of electronic vs privacy of cash (not to mention a lot of smaller stores in my city are starting to not accept cash due to robbery risk). And now with chip based cards and machines finally mostly widespread in the US, I feel as safe as possible when carrying anything linked to my money.

I realize everyone's risk tolerance and balance with convenience is not the same, but I so far haven't seen much benefit for most cases that make these preferable to bank issued cards. Most of the balance related things I see arguable are the need to use cash vs electronic in general based on location, privacy needs, weird laws like friends who use legal marijuana for medicinal or recreation having to use cash because banks and/or merchant accounts won't work with them because of federal laws, or gas stations that have higher prices for electronic over cash, etc.

Does this basically just put a fraud buffer in front of your actual bank?

It does. Ive been looking for something like this for a while cause the rise of AI is making me paranoid of carrying my debit card.

I use Wise for accepting intl. payments. I just wish they provided a way for people to pay via card without making an account.

are people downvoting because it feels like spam? seems legit to me, i doubt spammers are gonna care about microg lol

I think people are wary of potential paid shilling. They're pushing a specific brand unprompted. The title is click-baity. The statements sound like they were pulled from ad-copy ("signing up was super easy"). People likely aren't getting to the MicroG part, but even that felt like a "hey, psst, if you don't like Google, MicroG works." I.e. it's a downside that really isn't a downside...

Honestly, even reading OP's responses it's tough to tell if this isn't going to result in someone saying, "looks cool, how do I sign up?" and then OP swooping in with a "here's a link that gives us both $10 back when you make your first cross-currency transaction!"

Just to note, I didn't downvote, I'm just answering why alarm bells might be getting triggered. It could very well be that OP really just liked their Wise experience and wanted people to know, and has no ulterior motive in posting this. Unfortunately, that's often not the case, and now we're all skittish.

Thats all im literally doing. Im posting about my experience and wanting to encourage conversation.

Nothing in what im saying is paid advertising and im also getting familiar with the degoogled space so im just saying what works and what dosent.

This is an example of people not just fucking reading and im tired of that shit. It dosent encourage discussion, just resentment and avoidance in even wanting to post. We got bigger problems in Lemmy but people pick and choice what to be annoyed about.

I dont understand it either. I sometimes honestly dont get this community, im not posting anything crazy. Im putting this out there cause for US card holders, besides Privacy.com, we dont have other options for buffer cards.

Wise is a legit company and they have been in business since 2011 and i put this under the PRIVACY community for a reason. Or maybe its because i talked about Privacy.com in a bad light. Theyre under fire because theyre completely changing their privacy policies and want to hold data they shouldnt be holding.

i think it's because your post does feel like spam at first glance. the title feels like clickbait ('this card' instead of smth like 'wise' card) and the image also kinda feels like an ad

Out of curiosity, how is cash becoming obsolete in the USA? Here in Canada it's still accepted pretty much everywhere except parking meters (which is infuriating).

path: 0 26383388 26383726 26385116, hotness: undefined, score: 2, children: 2

Because cash is not trackable(depending on where its going) . Our government wants to track our currency, even the digital ones like Bitcoin.

The only places we have that accepts cash still are anything retail/resturants or your paying for parking fees at State Parks or certain locations where you access hiking trails. Everything else is card or using Google/Apple Wallet.

Wait, you are saying you can't pay for groceries with cash? Or socks? Or a tire rotation? Vehicle insurance? Or bus rides? Or the farmer's market? I'm so confused. What region are you talking about? Online maybe?
