Sub Rehab is is a fantastic resource. You can find alternatives to all of the subreddits you were a part of.

I’m also a refugee, search function seems to be working fine personally for communities I was familiar with previously.

Or I just went the long way around found an instance and browsed the local communities for that instance.

Right, searching is fine. But already I found several instances of the same "sub" and unsure which one to join.

Also, if I'm not sure what I'm searching for - then what?

To me this might be a key issue with Lemmy, having multiple versions of the same community in different instances.

I guess survival of the fittest eventually.

I have just been subscribing to the most active instance version.

I agree to survival of the fittest. I don't think it's a Lemmy problem. Anyone was able to create any subs on Reddit, "gaming", "true_gaming", "games". Eventually they either find their community/theme or die out.

I just subscribe to every community that I like, even if they are about the same theme.

When searching for a community, I just subscribe to the most subscribed.

You could always subscribe to multiple! We’re used to having one mega community on Reddit, but the beauty of the fediverse is it’s diversity. You may find that different versions of similar communities have different styles for posts or content quality!
