Reminds of the old story that I heard (unsure if it's true or not) about Torpenhow Hill in the UK.

Over centuries... various invaders and conquerors had come to that place and asked what it was called... First it was called Tor later on invaders added the word 'Pen' which was their word for Hill... later, more invaders came along and added the suffix 'How' which was their word for Hill.... and finally... it was named in more modern English as Torpenhow Hill.... which literally translates as Hill, Hill, Hill, Hill.

I don;t know if that's 100% true or not... but it's an amusing little story and given the oddities of the English language... I'd like to think it was.

Especially given there's a species of bear out there that's name is literally translated as Bear, Bear, Bear.

It's a pyramid scheme, always has been... every decade for the last 30yrs there's been a few of them... The dot.com boom and bust of the 90's was the start, in the 2000's everything went 'digital' which was the same old shit with an LCD added to it and a doubling of the price, digital services for games/music/movies where they could take away what you bought... then they got even more serious in the 2010's where the real enshitification of the internet started... the 'cloud' where you were no longer allowed to own your own data, subscription fees for everything... 'smart' appliances that just tracked you and stole your privacy for the enrichment of a few billionaires... Crypotocurrency, the biggest scam and pyramid scheme to date... and now in the 2020's, crypto as a means to launder money and bribe politicians, massive corruption, fraud and consolidation of power by evil people and their corporate paymasters... and of course... the newest and worst pyramid scheme of them all... AI...

The only way to win is not to play... don't use it, disable it, remove it... every time you use it you are encouraging them to invade you life, take away your rights and exert control over what you can do and think... I know some of you will think that's an over reaction, you will learn one day that I and others were right to warn you as I have been doing for years now... But by then it will be too late, the climate is burning and these billionaires are trying to make it happen quicker, they value their wealth more than your very existence and they will hide away in their bunkers and private islands as the rest of humanity burns.

In some countries you can, I believe Canada is one of them... at least I believe it's legal to do so in Toronto.

Put them all in a mansion with 1 chair, 1 bed, no doors to the outside, no windows, no entertainment and force them to pay a mortgage with not enough income... and live stream it on the internet.

Or better still, take the drives from the servers their consciousness is stored on and put it into a grinder.

The only way to win, is not to play. Cancel your prime, shop elsewhere and you 'WILL' get better deals, for those of you in the UK and EU, ALWAYS use a credit card for online purchases, as that gives you even better protections.

Shop locally, support businesses in your community, because the money you spend there, gets spent there over and over again. When you spend it in chain stores and online, that money is sucked out of your community.

I get it though... some people only care about the convenience of the deal, and that's the real cause of enshitification... the peoples failure to care about the effort they put into things... In effect it's a form of laziness and conditioning, people value their convenience above and beyond anything else. We see it in everything, social media is amongst the very worst of it, with friends complaining that they can't keep in touch because 'you're not on (insert SM name here)'... because the effort of stepping outside the bubble they've been sucked into is far too inconvenient for them, and you get to find out that these people are not really your friends... they never were, because they're convenience was always more important than your existence to them.

As for amazon, brands have woken up... do a search for something and you'll rarely find anything from those branded manufacturers... only 3rd party sellers and cheap crappy chinese knock-offs. Items that don;t even meant safety standards in the country they being sold in. Electrical goods that are a fire hazard and have caused loss of life... and amazon keeps getting away with it because '3rd party sellers' not them.

The only way to win is not to play... cancel your subscriptions, stop using their services, stop buying digital goods that can be taken away from you. Return to physical media that actually ends up being cheaper in the long run. You are the consumer, you have the power... hell... try going without a few times, you don't actually need that cheap piece of plastic crap you just ordered to save yourself a few minutes of 'prep' time in the kitchen that will break after a couple of weeks or be consigned the back of a cupboard after a few uses and forgotten about.

You have the power... use it better.

Takes me back to 2008 and Rockstar claiming that GTA 4... was designed for hardware that didn't exist yet after that shit show of a shitty port to PC... It would be a further 6yrs before I could play that game at a reliable 19080p, 60fps... then GTA5 came out a year later.

They have no understanding of statistics or causality and correlation... they lack any critical thinking skills and blindly believe what they are told and can normally be guaranteed to consume their media from predictable sources (facebook, telegraph, daily mail, xhitter and so forth).

My sister is becoming one of those... she refuses to watch the news because it's depressing and has no understanding of the world outside of her own little bubble or facebook... she voted for brexit and has tried to deny it ever since instead of admitting she was fooled into doing so by the lies of racists, rich wankers who wanted to protect their tax haves and avoidance. I wouldn't be surprised to find out she voted for reform or tory last election or would do in the next.

I grew up in a city that has hundreds of miles of cycle paths, you could ride anywhere without ever having to ride on a main road, only the occasional first/last section to get to a house/shop. The nearest path to my old house was 150 yards down the road and when I was growing up before I started driving at 17 (mid 90's), we used to ride everywhere. It was about 8 miles from corner of the city to the other.

As I got older and relied on a car... I found myself missing cycling. So in 2017, I got a 21spd hybrid city bike... Alas, I discovered that injuries and post op limitations restricted me to at best... 5-6 miles and I was exhausted.

So in 2022, I got myself an e-bike. A Haibike Trekking with the bosch mid drive system. I can now ride with ease once more.

Alas... I also moved from that city with hundreds of miles of cycle paths a few months after getting it... Now I live near to the sea and mountains... and there are 2 cycle routes near me. One I can do a 9m round trip, it would be longer but for some daft reason they never finished the path around the reservoir and it's boggy and muddy for 5 months of the year or any time it rains in the other 7 months. The other route means riding about 1/2 mile through town to pick up the nearest path and then you've got about 7 more miles of pretty flat, open countryside next to a river... but also next to flood planes. So at this time of year, it can flood a section about 1/2 a mile long at the 2.5m mark (from my house). Oh and that first route, also floods long before you ever get to the reservoir restricting your ride to at best 4 miles in total there and back... it's only 9 miles without the flooding.

I can do an 8 mile trip to an estuary and add another 1 mile I'm on the edge of a huge forest... 2 further miles through the forest and I'm at the beach... making it a 22 mile round trip... But the stony, gravel roads aren't exceptionally suited to my city bike. I've bought reinforced tyres and puncture proof tubes... so maybe I'll give it a shot next year.

For now, it's unlikely I'll be getting much riding done until March.

Always makes me laugh when people say HDD is dead.... as a home user, when I can buy solid state storage in the 20TB range for my home server for less than a HDD... I'll consider believing them.

They simply don't make any consumer SSD larger than 8TB and for the SATA SSD side, it's well over £500 for one of them, meanwhile you can get 20TB HDD for about £300 here.

Last year the price of a Samsung 870 SSD was £300, I bought one, they've not been below £500 since.

I'm just waiting for the day they get the rights to the games No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 from back in the early 2000's.
