Pain has a scientific definition, right?
Scientifically speaking, pain requires pain receptors, nerves and the like, so trees feel no pain. But the point that other people are trying to make, if I understand correctly, is that plants have agency and can perceive their environment and adapt in a way that's not too dissimilar from animals, and you may think of the stimulus that causes them to adapt to survive as analogous to pain. Personally I find where we draw lines in scientific knowledge arbitrary at times, such as with some taxonomy, or how viruses are often not thought of as alive because they don't fit a definition that's man-made. So I can see why people would say plants may feel some kind of pain, just not the way we do as animals, and that depending on how we agree to define pain it may or may not count.
We have a very simple purity test, don't support genocide or wars on the global south and we have no issue with you. If you can't agree on that much then there's no reason why we should accommodate you.
The downfall of imperialism can't come soon enough.
Sounds like he may be a socially progressive liberal.
You do support the right of liberals to be moderate over my right to be alive and my country to not be invaded, based on your own words. You also don't even know how to spell Uyghur, nor anything else on the matter.
If people are okay with, say, me and my family being genocided just because of where we were born, why should I care whether they identify as moderate or whatever else? Again, don't agree with genocide and wars on our countries and you're welcome. It's not that much to ask lmao.
I love your snark o7
Well, if you want to talk about some Soviet vegetables, we can.
Depending on what you mean by saving us, I don't think China will, but they're not invading random countries, staging coups, droning civilians, etc, so these two countries are not even remotely comparable.
It's not confusing if you have been paying attention this year.
Yikes.
You're doubling China's population
You seem to be very misinformed about China, if you don't know what Tibet was like before (it was comparable to chattel slavery), or how you seem to believe China just wants to annihilate Taiwan, as if they couldn't just wait for them to agree to a peaceful reunification. Ironically China did do bad things in the past, such as siding with the Pol Pot when they had a falling out with the USSR, but you'd rather repeat propaganda.
Did you read Reform and Revolution?
I hear anti-communist nonsense at work sometimes and this is what it feels like. "Commies tried so many times and it always fails!" (literally ignoring coups and regime changes, AES, that capitalism might kill us all, sex trafficking, etc)
DHH is far right, clearly, I'm not sure they have a plan for destroying FOSS, they seem to be trying to normalize their worldview (which is bad enough)
I think the difference is that we have a very intuitive understanding that computers or cars or cameras aren't alive, while we can chat with LLMs and many people are genuinely convinced they're "alive" in some sense. It's important not to anthropomohphize LLMs so we can have a healthier relationship with them as tools, and not think of them as analogous to friendships or romantic relationships, etc.
