Maybe it helps to think about the fact that everything scales with size so while his target kcal for weight loss might make you fill full (or maintenance) but for him it might be as challenging as your 1200 kcal limit.

Overall all you can do is do your thing, potentially introduce healthier habits like substituting rice with chick peas etc. but eventually he is responsible for his body. (I am also responsible for my weight gain).

Use rated games to be matched with real players. After a few games that you will lose you will be matched with players against which you have roughly a 50:50 chance of winning / losing. Don’t focus on the ELO rating specifically at the start. Playing against humans is definitely different from the computer. In the lower ELO ranges you will see a lot of moves that don’t make sense and that the chess engine would never play. On the other hand opponents can be quite good at reading your strategy (as opposed to a dumbed-down engine).

Use the Analyse game function after the game to get an idea of the mistakes you made.

I would start with 10 minute games so that you can play a few games in a row (gives you more practice) but still have time to think.

I use lichess but never used chess.com so it’s not a comparison more that I defaulted to lichess since it’s open source.

I am fairly amazed at what it provides though

Yeah. On Mastodon it took like 3-4 rounds of Twitter insanity to bring it into a state where you could use it if you weren't just discussing Open Source software.

For Lemmy we are currently in wave 2 of Reddit insanity, but this is the first time that Lemmy is in a usable state and has available instances. So I kind of hope we have a small, moderately active community running and in the next round of Reddit insanity people who look into lemmy can actually find this community.

I consider sport and working out to be really helpful for weight loss, primarily for its positive impact on my mental health, which in turn, also helps me to keep up a healthy and restricted diet.

I realize already that the same distance in swimming/running burns fewer calories than when I did them in a less-trained state, which is why my aims are now time-based (45 minute swim, 1h walk, etc.).

A typical mistake people who start to count calories make is to select in the TDEE calculator an active lifestyle and then adding the workout calories on top, which kind of means they are added twice when in reality they need to be accounted for only once. So I decided to pick "sedentary", even though I work out. Then all workout burnt calories may help in losing weight a little faster, but I don't risk to plateau due to overeating / wrong estimated calories for a workout.

Also, I do think a lot of advice in dieting should probably distinguish between

  • obese people trying to lose weight
  • normal weight people trying to lose the christmas-kilos

What works to shed a few pounds may not work to lose 40kgs.

Peeing while standing I do only at urinals. At home I sit. Of course I would also pee while standing, but the additional cleaning need is just not worth it.

Roasted Chickpeas? Not sure how they score on fiber but I assume not so bad

I started to substitute rice in many instances with chickpeas. Legumes themselves have protein but pair it with carbs, so I figured its actually "more effective" for my macros to not add bread/rice/pasta to a lentil/chickpeas/beans dish.

My current favourite is chickpeas in tomato sauce. I meal prep it for the week and all of the sudden chicken breast is not dry anymore.

Best of luck on your journey. Its good that you don't have to do it entirely alone but have support by your Doctor and of course this community!

I got "hooked" by playing 5+3 (5 minutes for each player and 3s per turn for each player) games online. It really makes it more enjoyable because the clock is a natural antidote to "perfectionism". If I blunder a piece now, I still get mad, however, it's bound to happen under a time constraint so I don't lose the motivation for the next match due to this.

Lichess wrote an automated message into the chat about potential temporary banning so I didn't feel I needed to report it. In the end, I won the game :-)

I am playing on Lichess and just dropped from 700-800 range where I frequently played >800 ELO numbers back to the 600 range and in some way its also true there. I dropped down on an evening where I probably should have just stopped playing and so now I have to make my way up very concentrated against players that objectively don't develop their pieces well but somehow manage to make renegade moves that are challenging to counter...

Using 5:2 (day) fasting I was fairly successful a few years ago. I think since I did 5:2 I am now in a much better place for plain calory-counting (if I used up my calories I know I will last the rest of the day without food).

Maybe I'll pick it up again at some point, potentially combined with calorie counting. on the feeding-days.

They played at 82%, one blunder, 2 mistakes, 1 imprecision (sry, translating terms to english on the fly). So I don't think they were playing extremey bad.

Very good point.

  • Serving it on a smaller plate / bowl
  • Adding a vegetable side / salad, so that you mix bites of your favourite dish with something that fills you up.
