If the Play Store becomes required like that then Android's already-shaky status as an open source base platform is going to go out the window. I'm glad there are non-Google distros of Android but there really needs to be more of a push to make a completely FOSS phone platform.
really looks like more of a squircle
Finally the live service bubble is popping.
I hope the developers working on these projects get put on to something else, instead of shown the door as is so often the case.
Reddit has a longstanding reputation for being a hive of scum and villainy (like hosting the_donald for years, or kotakuinaction, etc). I really hope that Lemmy keeps with the general left-leaning vibes of the fediverse overall, hopefully being a good space for queer people, women, people of colour, etc.
I definitely really like the quality of discussion on Lemmy, it makes me feel like it's actually worthwhile to comment and discuss things again. It feels like how it felt when I started using reddit back in 2012 or so.
Making a lot of clones of myself, raising them all differently, and seeing how many of them turn out in the same way as me.
Monthly Active Users are unfortunately down for the past several months in a row. Something more needs to happen.
I'm glad this was over what sort of games Steam sells and pushing back against payment processors, but the flipside to this is how Steam has far too lax moderation of its community forums as well (which is explicitly part of Gaben's position here). Billionaires aren't your friends, Gabe is politically a weird libertarian that people just happen to like, and Steam's community is one of its most toxic features.
It works really well for me actually. Every time that mobile app begpost comes up it's a great reminder that I shouldn't even be looking at Reddit at all. Cut down my doomscrolling on my phone immediately.
German natives speaking English usually makes for one of my favourite accents, it's very pleasant.

It's just wild to watch Bluesky fans stumble over themselves to say it's part of a federated future and that it's decentralized yada yada, when it takes millions of dollars to do with it what takes me $80 for a Raspberry Pi and $15 for a domain name to do with ActivityPub.
A little worried that with swapping those components like that, it's trying to be too many things for too many different groups of people instead of one exact thing.
I think all I really want is something shaped like this with a keyboard, like an old Blackberry that could be used as a terminal.
Get that crypto shit out of here lmao. The answer is just building strong communities that give a shit about building good internet spaces. It's political, and that's not a bad thing. It's not hard, and it doesn't need to be profitable to work.
Definitely a long way off from how active they were a year or two ago.
I always like to say the fruits of FOSS labour are the common heritage of mankind. It belongs to all of us as a public good, created and maintained by selfless workers. (Nevermind the fact that most FOSS projects are based out of Europe anyways).
Hey, don't just blame the parents. In the back half of this article the author points out that social media harms youth no matter if their parents let them use it or not because of the social webs it creates. If you choose to keep your child off social media then they could just as easily end up isolated from their peers because everyone else IS using it.
I'm really keen on one of these displays eventually, as I can set aside the issues with refresh rate and colour accuracy, but the price needs to drop way down. It needs to be competitive with regular LCD monitors.
I look at terminals all day for work, this would make it so much more comfortable.
Hi! I'm trans. If you're looking to change your mind about that I'm happy to chat! Otherwise I suggest you look to get out of here as soon as possible.
