Putting two women up against Trump and his base was a huge mistake. Look at what happened to Trump when you put another old man up against him.
Putting two women up against Trump and his base was a huge mistake. Look at what happened to Trump when you put another old man up against him.
I don't think there's enough proof what the real cause was. People run to blame misogyny but Clinton and Harris were also much further to the right than Obama or Biden.
I'm more inclined to lay the blame at the feet of neoliberalism but I might just be an eternal fucking optimist.
What is optimistic about that? You're rejecting the idea that sexism -- something dependably present for thousands of years -- probably isn't to blame, it's just the blunders and misdeeds from the last, what, 50-60 years to blame instead?
It wasn’t the women. Hillary was awful as a person and Harris came in with such energy only to crush it by trying to court the right because the DNC at large would rather lose than be actual, left-wing competition. Right-wingers are all-or-nothing right now and you can’t convince them of fucking anything.
When Trump was against another old man he did great because not only was Biden the same as what I just mentioned he was also an old white man which people are rightly sick of. Once Harris showed up Trump fell to fucking pieces and the only people who killed Kamala’s momentum were of her own party.
Being a woman, if anything, helped a lot.
Saying that being a woman ‘helped a lot’ overlooks the gender bias that exists, and more so with young men who disproportionately voted for Trump.
Trump’s numbers have actually so far been worse(I mean, a lot of them fucking died from covid for one).
I highly doubt being a woman was the reason they lost when there are a million very clear and obvious bad aspects to their strategies. There was so much courting of the right you’d think they were the Republicans of 20 years ago and not Democrats.
People still should have voted against Trump but a vote should be for someone you like and not against some you don’t.
To build on what @xmunk said, the other old man did not stand a chance this year and only won 2020 because of Covid
How did he only win because of Covid? You’re suggesting that a pandemic caused more people to go out and vote?
I wish all the Biden voters who sat out were leftists. But there’s no way there’s fifteen million of us in the country.
There's going to be less of us in this country. Everything points to the Trump administration taking it out on us: "“Here’s my current mood,” Davis wrote on X Wednesday morning. “I want to drag their dead political bodies through the streets, burn them, and throw them off the wall. (Legally, politically, and financially, of course.)“. "-Trump's potential AG pick.
I do partially agree with your sentiment but the biggest issue is the Democratic party itself.
In my mind if they hadn't ham fisted Hilary in '16 none of this would have happened in the first place and that's only the tip of the iceberg of that parties failings.
I think its great to be reading the amount of "in hindsight, screwing over Bernie Sanders over the last decade was probably a mistake" (mostly seeing this in the centrist/slightly liberal circles I inhabit)
I still have this irresistible urge to bop the speaker on the head every time I hear the phrase "Bernie Bro" uttered... I wonder why that is.
In 2016 I was working for a company that sells information from the US health insurance market to other parts of the US health insurance market and I was so excited to have to find a new job along with a lot of my other coworkers... we've grown from twenty employees to one hundred and forty since then.
You're wasting your breath. Liberals will never learn. 15-20 million former Dem voters just exercised their right to tell the party and voter base to go fuck themselves. Liberals could reflect on why, but they prefer to circlejerk and lash out. They're doing exactly what they did with civil rights in the 60's, and continued doing right through 2016. They'll scream and cry, blame the left for their own resounding ignorance and failure, and continue pushing Republican-lite down your throat. They'll continue dismissing your requirements as too "radical", and act like they know voters better than you do. They learned nothing from 2016, so why would they now?
What they don't understand is that the left view them not as an ally but as an enemy blocking progress, in many ways more dangerous than Republicans (better the devil you know), and have apparently reached the point where they'd prefer to let fascism burn the US to the ground than continue the imperialist plutocratic charade any longer.
NOTE: I'm not American, and would've voted for Kamala if I were, so don't waste your time shooting the messenger. Either way, I'm not dumb enough to blame the true American left for the resounding failure of American Neoliberalism and conservative-lite.
This post is probably going to get (appropriately) modded, but what you said needs to be said.
Maybe re-post it to !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world and continue the conversation there.
The thing about all of this, is that I called it many months ago. Trump has a voter cap. He matched it exactly. 71 million. That same 71 million that came to vote for him in 2020.
All that the voters had to do was go out and overtake that 71 by going 2 - 3 million more and it would've been fine. Blowout if all 15 million people participated and Trump would remain capped.
We would've fucking won this by THAT MUCH! That makes it worse to know that we lost knowing this!!
By February, Ukraine is gone. They already struggle not to win, but just to exist. European aid is not enough, and Ukraine will disappear from maps. The Baltics are next. Moldova is next. Poland is next. Georgia is next. Finland is next. Taiwan is gone. South Korea might survive, but won't ever look the same. NATO is gone. Chinese and ruzzian influence in Africa and South America will grow tenfold. There is no superpower to keep ruzzia and china and north korea and iran in check anymore. Worst, when WWIII start, you will be on the Axis side.
All of that is a win for them. They are not leftist, they are autocratic revanchists. Hurting undesirables was always more important to them than helping others or even themselves, it’s just the definition of “undesirables” that they disagree on with far right.
Same old boring story. You should blame the fascists for their fascism, not leftists.
What you may not be able to understand is that Trump stopped all the "moderate republicans" from leaving him and the dems failed to win them.
The dems ran their campaign on winning moderate republicans. It failed. As it was always going to fail.
The one thing Trump has done right to win was appeal to the people who might listen.
Is amazing you could have to learn the dance lesson over and over again.
Social Democrat, here. Harris wasn't even my 4th pick in 2020 primaries. That said, I campaigned like crazy for her and voted for her because of the very obvious reasons you mentioned.
My wife tried to reach out to one of her cousins who self-describes as a socialist and noted how important it was for his niece and her rights. He wouldn't even respond.
Alright, fuckers... You're going to learn really quickly just how much easier it is to smash a puzzle than put it back together.
Be more angry about Congress. If everything else went Democrats, they could have blocked all this bullshit.
I still don't believe it. But Harris is saying accept it, so the DNC is going to roll over on another steal.
Everyone was reporting record turn outs up to and during the election, but somehow 15m people just didn't show? It's anomomolous.
Tldr: a lot of people assumed record turnout because we had higher registration numbers. Those predictions were in some cases wrong.
Additionally, at the time the election was call, not all the votes were counted. California was only about halfway done counting, but could be safely called for Harris. So the vote totals when the election was called is likely quite different from the actual totals.
We're not doing that.
The election wasn't stolen. They won bcz people decided to sit out the election. It's idiotic, but that's what they decided to do. You can fuck right off with the voter fraud bullshit.
Then fuck it...welcome to hell. As of right now, no one's fucking opinion on anything matters anymore, at all...it's a red trifecta that leads us straight to the 1940s...the only difference is I think China comes out on top at the end of the decade instead of the allies.
Grab your popcorn and prep your basement. There's no going back now.
Short of a revolution and dismantling the military industrial complex, we were always the bad guys for WWIII.
~20 million die of lack of clean water, preventable disease, etc each year due to dictators the US arms to prevent economic development and keep resources and labor cheap.
Blaming ordinary people achieves nothing. If you want to do that, why not start with the ones who actively voted for Trump?
The blame lies with the democratic party establishment. People were not happy and they decided to offer more of the same. And now they try to turn the blame on the guy struggling to afford his groceries rather than admitting to their failure, and then you fall in line and join the blame game. If they believed Trump was such a threat they could have made sure they had the best candidate they could get, with a primary. But they misled you and tried to make it your responsibility to bolster their shitty centrist candidate and convince everyone to ignore the blood on her hands.
IT DID NOT WORK. They were too pig headed to learn this lesson in 2016. If Trump really does what we fear, it might already be too late to learn it. But if it is not, you need to stop blaming your neighbours and start blaming the fuckers who keep trying to force shit sandwiches down your throat just because the other guy is literally Hitler.
Try standing for something other than just being better than Trump for fuck's sake.
I feel you, but I chose to see another possible future.
A positive one, this one https://cleantechnica.com/... to be precise.
TLDR: Only the USA will slowly die, ignored by the rest of the world. Europe, China, India and Latam will be the winners and won't go to war to eachother cause they don't need and don't want to. Green energy will flourish everywhere except in the US of A that will rot. It is sad for its population but at least the rest of the world will grow bigger and better.
I know this is a leftist utopia, but I chose to believe (and thus fight) for something better rather than plunge into depression.
Well, i live here, so excuse me if I don't celebrate my country imploding from a bunch of fucking morons voting for a dementia riddled morally bankrupt fascist enabled by a bunch of competent fascists waiting in the wings.
Yeah sorry about that buddy.
Hopefully if it comes to that you'll be able to escape, but I know plenty of americans don't even have a passport or money to travel a few states away, so even less means to escape abroad (and I'm not even talking about the various immigration rules).
I'd honestly rather stay and fight fascism than just leave and let my family suffer instead. If everybody leaves, the fascists win.
Where are these supposed US leftists who didn't vote blue, exactly? I've seen a lot of vitriol towards them but not actually encountered any.
I've only seen people who fit half the description -- e.g. users from lemmygrad or hexbear who railed against Harris but also support Putin or China.. Those probably aren't US voters.
Kamala Harris is missing 10-million votes compared to Joe Biden, and all the leftists on this website does is complain about "Gaza / Palestine".
If the leftists were enough to sway the vote, don't you think they should have listened to us?
Hey look, someone who learned nothing in 2016 and continues to show they've learned nothing in this election too.
I'm sure the chastisements and lectures are going to help with dispelling the notion that the Democratic party is a party of smug elitists.
This is going to get pulled because this sub doesn't allow selfposts FYI. Not that I disagree with your premise.
Republicans, despite significant consolidation under MAGA, are not a cohesive unit.
This past year, we've seen the buffoonery that was Mike Johnson's election to Speaker of the House. This next year, Donald Trump will bless Mike Johnson but, and a HUGE BUT, the buffoonery still exists and will be amplified by all of the new supporters Donald Trump has this time around. Ex: Elon Musk. More on him later.
But for now, lets address this point.
By February, Ukraine is gone. They already struggle not to win, but just to exist. European aid is not enough, and Ukraine will disappear from maps. The Baltics are next. Moldova is next. Poland is next. Georgia is next. Finland is next. Taiwan is gone. South Korea might survive, but won’t ever look the same. NATO is gone. Chinese and ruzzian influence in Africa and South America will grow tenfold. There is no superpower to keep ruzzia and china and north korea and iran in check anymore. Worst, when WWIII start, you will be on the Axis side.
There's a significant number of Republicans who are against Trump's isolationist rants and will be against him when this begins to happen. And the non-isolationist Republican numbers will grow as this progresses. With only 51 to 53 Senators, Republicans cannot afford significant numbers of defections when it comes to foreign policy / treaties (which must be signed by the Senate).
Democrats will be forced to work in unison with the non-isolationist Republicans to give those 3, 4, or 5 Republicans (willing to stick their necks out) a shot at keeping our foreign policy solid. But that's all we need at those points to prevent the collapse of treaties.
The things I worry about are the broad abuses of executive power over the short term. RFK Jr. in the Department of Health and Human Services + Elon Musk in some kind of major Cabinet (or otherwise Executive position) will wreck our government. We will have a lot of cleaning up / rebuilding to do in 2028.
However, the causes here are too disparate. Elon Musk and RFK Jr. are power hungry monsters. They'll have a few months to settle into their new roles, but ultimately they'll want more power. Never doubt in the narcissist's drive for power. This has come time-and-time again across ancient empires and modern governments: the advisors WILL push back on Trump for self-serving goals, and this WILL cause headaches.
Elon Musk in particular has a significant EV Trade (which Trump's followers are clearly against). Elon Musk has significant ties to China (Gigafactory Shanghai), and China WILL leverage this. Elon Musk is going to ask for calm relations between US and China so that his factories / battery supply stays solid.
So when the inevitable hole in the Tarriffs comes up (ex: Chinese Batteries are free to come in), Donald Trump's promise to the middle class Ford Factory workers (who are currently constructing Ford EV Battery plants) will finally be broken. Or, alternatively, Trump sides with Ford + US Battery manufacturers and fucks Elon Musk over.
Win/Win in my eyes. Either way, someone inside of Trump camp loses. The Tarriffs literally cannot help both Elon Musk's China relationship AND the nascent US Battery manufacturing chain. All the while, Tarriffs are fucking everyone else over, at least know that there's likely no political victories to be had on this front.
At some point, these headaches will be too much and it will be better for Trump to dispose of Elon Musk (or vice versa: Elon Musk to switch allegiances and try to fail upwards once more). There will be a political fight, because this alliance cannot stand long term.
Bernie disagrees with you
I’m with you but it’s time to acknowledge that the Democratic Party and liberalism have failed. We need to offer a genuine, starkly contrasting vision for the future that is wholly different. We can’t be GOP lite and the party of “not Trump.”
I think they cheated and are sowing dissent to cover their tracks and get away with it.
Half the country didn’t vote. 70 million people directly voted for this outcome. If you want to rage at something, it would be appropriate to send it that way.
Consider how self-righteous and smug posts serve to dampen enthusiasm and cause people vote in contrarian ways. When dems and their dedicated supporters stopped trying to earn votes and instead switched to the current hostage-negotiation method of campaigning, they also ceased telling any kind of story about the future. The message became “it’s gonna be bad, but possibly less bad than if we let the evil man win” The margins were so bad it can’t be lazily pinned on antifa super soldiers. Something didn’t sell to a huge number of people.
The call is coming from inside the house, and lockstep supporters who refuse to question anything are the reason the DNC felt comfortable running the same losing strategy they’ve run over, and over and over again. To support this is to ensure it will keep happening. The DNC and their apparatus are completely to blame for their poor performance, and trying to externalize the blame simply covers for them and lays the ground work for more poor performance and weak results.
At this point the DNC would probably perform better if it dropped all the consultants and just randomly picked people off the street in different states.
But honestly, this is assuming the DNC fucked up, but they really do seem more comfortable with a fascist being in power than a candidate who might threaten corporate power, so possibly this is just the system functioning as intended.
If I lived in a swing state, I suspect I would have voted Harris based on harm reduction, but it would have pissed me off. They’ve indirectly told me they don’t want, and don’t need my vote throughout the campaign.
Unbiased feedback.
You need to realize not everyone thinks the way you do. People have their reasoning to their believes whether you consider them good or bad, that is your view and your view alone. This is the exact reason for voting and the existence of social democracy so each individual can make their voice hurt how they choose when voting.
You are angry right now, I get it. It didn’t go the way you wanted. But, you are the one who is sounding like you are sitting on a high horse scolding at large groups of people who don’t view the situation, the politics, the world the way you do. Come down and know that this is what democracy looks like.
I’m sorry that the election result didn’t go your way and your view of the world is falling apart. Such anger can only cause you harm for something you cannot control.
I’m sorry that the election result didn’t go your way and your view of the world is falling apart. Such anger can only cause you harm for something you cannot control.
Lulz.
The other side literally caused the Jan 6th 2020 event when the election didn't go their way. This guy just types up a few paragraphs in Lemmy.world to complain.
Kamala lost because she bear hugged the war criminals Netanyahu, Dick Cheney, and Joe Biden. She lost because, in a time of great economic suffering, her economic proposals did not meet the moment. She lost because she couldn't counter Trump's bullshit, her word salad is neither effective nor inspiring.
Blaming leftists for her failure is a pathetic, terminally online coping mechanism.
You are entitled to your own very unique opinion. In the meantime, enjoy having Trump implement his Project 2025 policies (with no guard rails this time) and galvanizing the conservative Supreme Court.
But hey! Now you can go to your grave telling everyone “I told those dems!” and feel really good on your high horse. ☺️
By all economic measures, the economy is better now than it was 4 years ago. Whoever is telling you different is a lying sack of shit.
Maybe the Democrats should have armed fewer genocides if they wanted people to be excited to vote for them.
Gay and trans people have already been dying to American bombs just that they're in Palestine makes it a back burner issue? as a trans person I stand by voting for a non genocidal candidate as suggested by the PFLP.
I don't think their vote even decided the race since Kamala lost PA and GA too. We shouldn't blame them either, blame the DNC for running Biden a second term until the final hour.
Yeah, they didn't even have a real primary and just at the end inserted the lady who got less electors than Andrew Yang in her home state. It just looked like politicians clinging to power rather than allowing any hint of democracy in the so-called democratic party.
Well, just picking Kamala was probably a better choice than having a contested open primary for 3 weeks leading up to the convention. People couldn't even vote on that primary, it would just be a vibe check the superdelegates decided on.
Primaries are already a bit undemocratic. The DNC and RNC get to pick and filter who is even in the primary. A random person with a following can't just sign up with their state government to be placed on the Dem primary, the DNC can prevent random person even if they have a following if they don't want them.
The democracy happens on election day.
And that's going to stop under Trump?
They had a choice between her and trump and they chose trump is what it boils down to.
Yeah it's a shit situation to have to vote for someone you don't want. But they chose trump.
Every president armed the same genocides. As will trump. It just doesn't make sense as an argument.
You seem to be under the mistaken assumption that Democrats are entitled to my vote. Their self-concept is that they're "the good cop" on domestic policies while in practice doing absolutely demonic shit to people abroad the same as any Republican but with a thin rainbow coating. That doesn't entitle them to shit from me, other than contempt.
No. But this wasn't about them. It was about stopping trump.
You chose Trump and I hope it goes okay for you.
By February, Ukraine is gone
So if Russia and Ukraine instead sign a peace deal with borders similar to where the Russian/Ukrainian speaking majorities are, and Russia doesn't invade the rest of europe and Georgia, will you do any introspection?
WWIII start, you will be on the Axis side.
The evil empire that prevents the global south from developing economically to keep resources and labor cheap by providing weapons to dictators is the axis side for WWIII. Like no matter who we end up allied with, most of humanity recognizes us as the bad guys.
The only way we could survive this is by being a united, social-liberal democratic beacon of hope for the rest of the western world, but we’re fucked.
Yup, letting neoliberalism hollow out your states created the conditions for fascism. Same thing happened over here.
So if Russia and Ukraine instead sign a peace deal with borders similar to where they are now, and Russia doesn't invade the rest of europe and Georgia, will you do any introspection?
In 2014 Russia invaded Crimea and the easternmost part of Ukraine. Then said the had absolutely no intention of expanding.
Cue 2022.
At which point did you do your introspection?
Between 2014 and 2022, fighting never stopped.
I think this would be a good time for you to study the subject you intend to discuss.
In February 2015, Russia and Ukraine signed the Minsk II agreements
Beginning in 2021, there was a massive Russian military buildup near Ukraine's borders, including within neighbouring Belarus. Russian officials repeatedly denied plans to attack Ukraine.
Minsk II was never enforced, after Zelensky got elected on a peace platform, he told told Azov and co to disband. They threatened to kill him, and kept at it. They were shelling Eastern Ukraine until they very day of the invasion.
But in any case, my analysis is not based on trusting Putin, it's based on what Russia is capable of and what the expected effects of such actions would be. They don't have the manpower to fight an insurgency in Western Ukraine, let alone invade the rest of Europe at the same time.
ine instead sign a peace deal with borders similar to
So Putin just says, "Oh, we were wrong. You're fine. Things just go back to the way they were." The concessions don't include anything else that Ukraine needs to pay them in money, manpower, or trade, and there's no further back-and-forth for about five years?
Hell yeah.
We putting money on this?
thanks for using Leebra!

I thought Harris was a terrible candidate but I voted for her and supported her as I was able.
But seriously, fuck the DNC that keeps giving us such horrible choices.
