Not personally a fan of Pewds, but this is a good thing. Dude’s still got 110M subscribers, he can reach an enormous viewer base. Not only that, but he’s got a magical ability to reach younger people in a way that grumpy old farts like me can’t (I’m five years older than him, which makes me a fossil). If Linux has had one problem through all its years on the good, green Earth, it’s marketing. Pewds might be just what it needs for this to finally be the Year of the Linux Desktop.

Like I commented on another post:

If someone makes the switch to Linux today, then this is the year of the Linux desktop for them.

What really defines "the year of the Linux desktop", objectively? 🤔

Very good point. Many personal journeys of discovery and liberation make for an exodus.

I think he's smarter than he lets on. Being a doofus for the whole world to see is for some reason highly profitable.

Definitely. Checks a bunch of marks:

  • wants to be in control of his computer
  • avid minimalist
  • doesn't want to be spoken to like a child by his computer
  • not afraid to try things with his computer

He's definitely got a lot of sides, it seems. 😁

I remember his Photoshop tutorials from 15 years ago. He was always geeky and smart. His content was never educational but he still used to post tutorials and stuff randomly.

not a fan of PDP, but the video has been viewed 2.8 Million times in less than 24 hours. nearly beat his 3 Million video views from 3 weeks ago

yeah it looks good, at least Linux gains more attention

I'm very familliar with the "Year of the Linux Desktop" joke but I also can't remember a time previously when Linux was getting this level of mainstream attention.

Watching this video brought back memories of when I first started using Linux. I really connected with him. Linux makes you feel like you have a lot of control – like you can change things easily. Windows, on the other hand, often feels frustrating and doesn't really help you much.

What I noticed about the video is that he encourages you to try new things and be willing to make mistakes. He doesn't seem to get upset when things go wrong, which I think is helpful for viewers. He also admits that Linux isn't for everyone, which is a realistic acknowledgement. It's a good video for introducing Linux, but it doesn't overhype it either.

Exactly. It was same for me. I started with Ubuntu and switched to arch after the whole snaps thing. Arch with i3, didn't understand a lot of things. Just copied other's setup and learned through mistakes. Switched to hyprland cause Wayland is the future and wow the way he riced must be so relatable to so many here.

I used to have a waybar but noticed too many technical limitations in it. Switched to ewww, way too complex and bad documentation. Switched to ags, was good till version 2 came out which is also complicated. Now I'm on ignos shell, which is still new but gtk4 based. I love it. Rofi has remained the constant but I might try replacing it with ignis too.

Tbh i haven't tinkered a lot recently, everything just works but of something fails after an update, i have so many options to fall back to xD. There's also hyprpanel and other similar projects that you can copy in case of a problem.

This was crazy. Its such a huge media figure making a genuinely high quality and convincing 'switch to Linux' video.

Also dam I gotta try out a tiling wm.

Okay enough now. I will bite the bullet.

I have to move to wayland and hyprland now or I will be the old weird grandpa still using Awesome WM with Xorg in 10 years. It will be ugly and I will curse a lot until everything is smoothly back in business for me but there's no way around it.

Really wish, Drew Gooden or Danny Gonzalez try Linux. They have been very openly critical of bog tech and AI for a while. But unlike pewds I'm sure they would call out a lot of cons cause they seem more relatable to normal people than pwd who calls everyone a normie.

Could you clarify what you mean here? I'm not sure that I understand.

This just reminds me of how Hitler stole and used the Buddhist symbol for his whole Nazi regime. This guy has nothing to do with Linux, but because it's him, people are now all of the sudden willing to listen. The fuck?

I don't understand your comparison; how does the misappropriation of a symbol equate to one using their popularity to increase awareness of a subject?
