Just seems kind of silly to avoid a whole platform over the personal ideology of the creator. No one seems to have any problem with some of the extreme anti-human ideologies that a lot of social media ceos have.
The devs run lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml. The admins on both remove anything which is negative about china in any way, even if completely truthful like the genocide they are commiting against the uygurs and about the imminent succession crisis, for "orientalism," something not even listed as a rule, and yet openly criticise the US government. They allow content approving of the uygur genocide. A person coming in to join-lemmy will see lemmy.ml as their first instance. Some of the other major instances have defederated against both if not only lemmygrad.
When I joined I checked out the mod log and saw a few mentions of “orientalism” as a reason for removing comments which I thought was weird.
It sounds like a huge waste of time removing mention of an ongoing human rights crisis. I guess it means a lot to them to have a little safe space on the internet where they aren’t reminded about painful things.

That is simply not true. First, there is no such "genocide", and when it comes up, it's generally supported by sources that confirm just that (by a variety of sources that might even on the face disagree with each other on other issues). On the other hand, when I see people claim there is a genocide, I've yet to see something that isn't directly tied back to Western propaganda. Additionally, I don't see removal of content that's critical unless it's markedly false (whether intentionally lying, or just unintentionally spouting propaganda they think is true). There is no specific privilege given to China.

Yeah, I got a bad taste of crazy tankie stuff on my first venture into Lemmy when I decided to check it out. Luckily I've not seen much extremist rhetoric once I joined. I do see where it's scaring off a lot of people from reddit, that said, I've seen lots of people promoting non-communist instances specifically, as well as the idea of federating/defederating as an antidote.
If you recall, reddit used to have that as well. There was a time (5+ years ago I think?) when communities dedicated to teen porn and upskirts and legit hate groups were regularly on /r/all before they all got banned. It comes with the public forums/community aspect. In a big diverse forum where there are communities you like and connect with there are bound to be those tou don't like...and then some you really don't like.
They hit r/LemmyMigration and it's creator once already, right before they announced the Spez AMA. They were quietly unbanned after a while with claims of it being a "mistake".
I have a feeling they'll try a much more thorough purge soon, despite all evidence showing how disastrously that would backfire.
You bet! I was flabbergasted during the AMA, in one post spez was crying reddit is not profitable, while in another one he was bragging about managing reddit for an insane amount of years, and I was like, seriously?? After all these years you still haven’t learned how to make money??

Do remember that the OP is on beehaw.org which is NOT run by genocide denying tankies. It just runs their software and the tankies don't have any control over that code its explained well in the docs.

while i'm not sympathetic to lemmy's moderation i happen to know about raddle, and: it's probably worth noting that the person who runs raddle is a known, serial sockpuppeteer who has repeatedly, violently threatened and stalked users on reddit he doesn't like and used sockpuppets to troll and harass users on raddle itself. i would accordingly not consider him a particularly reliable narrator, and heavily doubt anything he has to say about anyone. he is just not a trustworthy figure in general.
Thanks for the in depth links. I appreciate it. That's unfortunate. With that, that's the beauty of open source and having different options for instances to join. I know Beehaw doesn't subscribe to those uh ideals. I'm also on kbin, which can interact with Lemmy and everything. I don't know - I'm still brand new to all this.
Definitely a shame to see this. But with all new communities it's important to be vigilant for that kind of toxicity, and I'm definitely gone the moment I get a sniff of it seeping in over here. Not like reddit was any better, you could barely go a week without a random subreddit being taken over by awful people.

You know, his takes are so extreme I often feel the account is a parody or, slightly more likely, a far right 4chan type posing as a tankie for kicks and giggle (or worse)
I've joined both in hopes of seeing which one thrives the most in terms of users in the niche communities that made Reddit worth visiting for me, personally. So far, they seem largely similar. Points to Lemmy for having an Android app ready to go. Kbin has one in early, early beta that is (according to the GitHub) lacking in certain functionality.
From my understanding, you can interact between the different platforms. They are a little different in their approach, and I don't fully "get" kbin just yet, but you can post to and interact with Lemmy from a kbin account.
Same principle (which is why they are compatible), but different tech and developers. Kbin also has a section where you can read and write regular hashtag-based mastodon-like posts in communities instead of completely relying on threads.

All the alternatives I've tried in past exoduses have been mostly fine as far as platforms go, just seriously stale and lacking due to lack of users and interactions. One thing I loved about Reddit was there always being enough people that even super niche communities had active users.

I’m getting 8-10 year old accounts that haven’t commented for months jumping on any post I make where I mention Lemmy. So far, Lemmy is apparently a place for “CCP apologists” and “tankies”.
I’ve yet to run into any of these individuals. Sounds like some people at Reddit are not so happy.
