What happens when we anser the riddle wrong?
Anime catgirls
Anubis doesn't repeatedly fuck me in the ass for using a VPN and hardened firefox settings.
seconded
As the software is called Anubis, technically, she's they're a jackalgirl
Non binary actually!
Edit: It looks like I'm wrong! See down below. The dev is enby while the mascot appears to be a girl
Got a source on this?
The artist uses female pronouns for them.

Mascot seems to be a girl, yes. Main dev is non binary.
Ah looks like I might've misunderstood then. The dev is enby, not the mascot
Gender-neutral term are never wrong and maybe there was another source for it.
Not sure who has the technical authority to decide the pronouns of a fictional character, commissioned artist or the commissioner.
The artist (according to the attributions file on the github) also gives her female pronouns, I think they avoid it though I see the word mascot used most often.
edit: linked attributions file as well because it's served in an unconventional location.
She is a girl, but she's not anime. She's a Canadian drawing
First of all, it’s a jackal girl.
Second, we wouldn’t need Anubis if it wasn’t for the hoard of scraping bots trying to copy every line of source code they can, to feed into LLM to be ground up and spat out as an attributionless mass of Frankenstein code.
Would they rather it be a soulless corporate logo? A flat two tone rounded corner letter on a square?
I think we collectively agreed FOSS mascots need to be full furry, preferably drawn by that one artist who did the KDE mascots
Tyson Tan, who also did Freedom Planet 2 designs.
The only way to fight multi-billionaire corporations is by being a little controversial opinionated.
The issue isn't even that they copy it once anymore. That would be a one and done thing.
The biggest problem is that they can't even be arsed to copy anything but the URL. They save their own resources by feeding only the address and metadata into the training model and then letting it loose to collect the datasets for itself again.
That means every new model and every slight tweak is an additional crawler that will spamm your server with requests, all because these lunatics are too cheap to buy their own hdds.
yep. this is like somebody putting a giant retro reflective wall in front of their house because the person across from them idles their vehicle with blinding LED headlights every morning for 10 minutes pointed straight in the living room
she goes to a different temple
And that's the reason he complains. The only association to anime in his mind is porn.
The world is dominated by people like this Karen. Making society so fucking dry, boring, and lifeless. The same sort of people who invented corpospeak.
I hate that society is largely driven by people who think that whimsy must die with your childhood
No its not. But you have that typical personality type in computers. The one who is all facts and data, very logical but very low emotional iq. And sometimes autistic, uncomfortable with default social norms.
That kind of person would put more stats in that screen rather than a picture. Or the picture would be something default, like a loading bar.
I dont see that type dominating the world outside. If you would go outside your door! :)
The real world is also not dominated by furries. However, pedophile, autistic billionaries are leading it into a huge transformation where we will have dystopia.
looks like an artistic logo to me, says everything it needs to.
Look, FOSS comes in two flavors.
Either all the contributor profile pics are flash lit smiling photos of middle aged bearded guys with glasses standing in an office, or they're anime girls.
I've gone for the corpo middle ground and my company picture is the Japanese business blahaj in a suit. I've been told, "I don't even look for your name I just look for the shark, it stands out more"
Where I work, profile pictures come in 2 flavors. Headshots or cat photos. I excersied radical free will and chose a rooster shooting lasers out it's eyes.
It's the same demographic for both.
or creatures :3
Oh- well i guess i am not a developer anymore now XD
Eh, tbh i'm pretty weirded out by most of the anime culture/fandom as well. I pretty much blocked anything anime on the fediverse because i dont want to see it. But the anubis girl didnt even register as anime for me. Even if it did it would be 5 seconds to block that image with ublock.
Anyway, i hope this will be the last time i post about how i dont like certain aspects of anime because nobody gives a shit.
I just see it and think at least it's not captcha.
it is a captcha
Who the hell is this pissed off at a cat girl

I'm guessing fathers
The kind of whimsiless corpo half-person who seems embarrassed to know that anime is a thing, and can't mention it without assuring his audience that he doesn't watch that stuff
Spurned lover.
idk i think its pretty out of place and gets kind of obnoxious seeing specifically anime furry adjacent stuff all the time. If its your thing, its really your thing, if its not your thing its mildly annoying/occasionally weird. Theres some communities where if youre an outsider its better not to engage with the fandom but thats hard when its your job to interact with these people all day.
ok tangent: i used to think furries are mostly innocent nice nerds, but then i found out how the vast majority are into it as a kink or some kind of nasty besti*lity cartoon fetish nasty nasty. I get reallly uncomfy around those dudes that wear the mascot head to walmart or whatever bc i feel like hes gonna jerk off about being a dog later
edit: yeah that sums up my feelings, i feel gross like youre exposing me/involving me in your kink when i see that stuff. not in an extreme way or anything. but the nature of it being wantinf to fck dogs takes it up a notch
What's your basis for saying the vast majority are into it as a kink thing? Because I'm someone who used to feel uneasy about furries for much the same reason you are — but that was when I personally knew few, if any people who were furries.
Over the last few years, my work has meant that I've met more furries than I can count, becoming friends with many of them, and developing a better understanding of what being a furry offers them. It's not a sex thing for the vast majority of furries I have known. This isn't just based on my experience either — I have an artist friend who draws furry porn for a living. Although she is not a furry herself, she exists in close proximity to the furry community so that she can network and get commissions, and she agrees that the people for whom it's a kink thing is a minority
I was a furry before I had words for it, way before I knew anything about sex stuff… I learned the term “furry” around 2002 and was shocked there was a term for it, and quite a few other people who felt the same way I did!
Furry porn is a thing the same way anime porn is a thing. Just because someone's into anime doesn't mean they're jerkin it to anime all the time
anime furry
It's literally a cartoon.
This reaction is not neutral. You're missing the people in between those repulsed by the idea of silly animal cartoons (you) and those who actively enjoy silly animal cartoons. Which is everybody else, who just see a cartoon and do not care.
Legitimate completely non-sarcastic question because I'm actually curious. How do you feel about trans rights and how do you feel about Trump?
then i found out how the vast majority are into it as a kink or some kind of nasty besti*lity cartoon fetish nasty nasty.
Well, good news! You're wrong!
A furry is simply somebody who's a fan of anthropomorphics. For example, I'm a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I do not want to fuck the TMNT. I'm willing to bet most fans of the TMNT don't.
I get reallly uncomfy around those dudes that wear the mascot head to walmart or whatever bc i feel like hes gonna jerk off about being a dog later
Maybe. Why do you care, though? It sounds like you're upset about kinky people existing.
True
Japanese and American animators have been cribbing off each other for nearly a century now
Every single animator has been taking inspiration from everywhere all the time tbf
Yeah tbh I'd probably call it a transpacific style. It's in the realm where its style is clearly in the tradition resulting from decades of interaction and inspiration between Japanese and North American artists. It's chibi meets post-calarts American
Yeah that means whoever looks at the picture is supposed to fuck their nearest dog. And soon, we'll all be gay!!! Oh gosh darn me holy knickers we've gotta kill them all now! Get the pitchforks and torches and the houn- OH MY GODDDD
At least it's not a hypersexualized catgirl.

Rule34 my dude
Not cat but obviously a jackal... (seriously... was the name and the 'weighing the soul of your connection'-thing not enough?)
Not anime...
Not a nurse... (that's a maple leaf on the cap and since when is a magnifying glass typical medical equipment?)
Also and much more important:
Not the more annoying (and often failing) Cloudflare screen...
Not another stupid CAPTCHA...
PS: Did version 1.23.1 really change the Canadian flag with a 'CA'... I have found screenshots of versions older than that that did display the flag as do newer ones. So I'm really asking myself if that was an intentional edit to get away with the "nurse" argument.
Please click on 3000 images of motorcycles to continue.
3000 clicks later: please try again
I swear Google just doesn't want me using the internet. The other day I went through 20 sets of motorcycles and buses and bicycles and fire hydrants before giving up
I hope you'll rejoyce to know that I chuckled loudly at your comment.
PS: Did version 1.23.1 really change the Canadian flag with a ‘CA’
it's probably an emoji loading failure, that's the "default" for flag when the correct image is not found (if it was a UK flag it would say GB)
since when is a magnifying glass typical medical equipment?
Small penis jokes aside, dermatologists use them.
why would anyone be offended by an adorable cartoon nurse girl w cat ears
it's like a post I read on the unixporn subreddit about people complaining of all the "anime linux rices" like my guy, everyone on this subreddit uses hyprland with the same neon colours, who cares? Have you seen the github profile picture of vaxry? it's FOSS my dude, it's all made by weebs and furries get over it.
who is canadian and jackal
not nurse, thats the canada flag maple leaf on the hat
using the red cross for anything other than marking battlefield medical personnel is a war crime

same fucking vibes, idc how it looks, or how it designed to look like, as long it works as intended then so be it
It sucks that you can't browse anywhere without javascript anymore. It used to be that all the open source sites, most news sites, forums running phpbb, even YouTube aside from the actual element all worked without javascript, and as a bonus there would be no ads.
Now, you can't browse anywhere without these challenges. At least this one is noninvasive, but the Cloudflare one and the Google Recaptcha do a ton of fingerprinting to choose whether to let you in.
USPS has a home-rolled one that requires web assembly enabled, or it silently fails with a blank page. There's no non-malicious excuse for that.
If this is the future of web browsing, hopefully more sites use systems like Anubis. But I also hope at least static pages can be viewable as plain html.
USPS has a home-rolled one that requires web assembly enabled, or it silently fails with a blank page
I sadly found out when trying to track the replacement display for my phone from iFixit through the Kobo web browser.
Yeah. I just leave pages that use this crap, but it's steadily becoming a larger and larger % of the sites I try to visit each day.
What's wrong with Javascript
Web browsers have a huge attack surface, and are most people's main exposure to potential exploits. Without javascript, 99% of the attack surface disappears, becuase the attacker no longer has a way to run arbitrary code.
A lot of terminal-based browsers don't do javascript.
If I want to scrape a page, this makes it a pain for both parties. I'm not an AI company, so I can afford the hash tax, but it's still a pain to spin up Firefox from a from cron job instead of wget. And I'm still doing it, Anubis doesn't stop small time scrapers like me who aren't running AI training, and only scrape like one page per day. So now the server has to serve the original page, plus all the Anubis stuff each time my crown job goes off.
The HT in HTTP stands for HyperText, not HyperCode.
Wait until they find out about Programmer Socks.
Fuck I love how queer FOSS is. When big tech corporations switch there support of LGBT organizations dependent on which party is in power to make a profit, FOSS will maintain there position.
Well, a core of FOSS. Unfortunately, there are many jerkasses within the FOSS community, see the Xlibre developer.
I'd rather this than find all of the stoplights in an array of 9, move a puzzle piece into the hole, or even sit through cloudflare (that fails more times than it succeeds). Catgirl nurse any fuckin day!
Scriptjunkie
With that name, I guess he's a JS dev trying to rebrand as a kernel vibecoder.
"We just accept [thing we just accept]" is a form of complaint
Something exists.
People complain about it.
Peak internet: solving a captcha while being judged by a catgirl 😭
Tbf, a place as serious as that could indeed use a different logo. Anubis absolutely allows for that, the catgirl is just the default.
But then, obviously some find this janky nature of OSS beautiful in its own right
Nuh uh
What a janky comment.
I was originally gonna post the Wikipedia info about this software because its actually fairly new, and only came out last year, but I found an infinitely more funny entry about the mascot:
The software's loading screen is branded with a commissioned artwork of Anubis as a jackal-eared anime girl by the European artist CELPHASE.[1][8] The mascot is depicted with a hoodie, skirt and magnifying glass. Before the artwork was ordered, Anubis used an AI-generated placeholder image.[1]
The Anubis mascot is shown to all end users and cannot be altered in the software configuration.[1] The image's feel may clash with websites that have more formal atmospheres, surprising or confusing users of those sites.[8] Altering the branding is an enterprise feature and Iaso has requested that operators not attempt to change it themselves unless they have made financial contributions to the project.[1]
Duke University, which has deployed Anubis for its digital archives, was "hesitant" to use it due to the mascot but has reached an agreement to use the software with custom branding.[1] Jamie Zawinski describes the mascot as "cutesey kawaii bullshit".[11]
So literally hardcoded weeb builtin lmao.
EDIT: It's $50 donation a month if you want the "official" enterprise version which gives you an easy overlay to change the HTML/CSS and uses some generic icons by default, but I'm sure anyone not into a jackal girl is more than capable of doing the same on the public image lol.

If you're interested about the software history anyway, it involves a response to Amazon spamming the crap out of the internet with their web crawlers, probably including for mass AI data collection:
Anubis is an open source software program that adds a proof of work challenge to websites before users can access them in order to deter web scraping. It has been adopted mainly by Git forges and free and open-source software projects.[4][5]
Anubis was created by Xe Iaso in response to Amazon's web crawler overloading their Git server, as the crawler did not respect the robots.txt exclusion protocol and would work around restrictions.[4][6] Iaso lists Hashcash as having inspired the project.[7] The application supports inspecting request elements such as headers like the User-Agent header to determine if the request should require proof of work.
The name Anubis is taken from the Ancient Egyptian god of funerals and judgement, who weighs the hearts of the dead to determine if they are allowed passage into the afterlife, whereas the Anubis software "weighs the soul of incoming HTTP requests".[8]
Xenia save us, foxgirl xenia
Remember y'all computers are gay.
There are worse things you could get for an "I'm not a robot" prompt.
AFAIK it hasn't been done because the mascot is placed there as some sort of branding by the creator of Anubis. In its website it's explained that you can change or remove the mascot for a fee if you plan to use it for corporate purposes.
While this is true, it's also worth noting that the original is permissively licensed. You can change it if you want, it's just that most people don't bother. Presumably changing the image would be as simple as replacing the three files in /web/static/img, but maybe that would look weird for some reason.
You're completely right, I guess it's kind of weird to fork it just to replace an image. If it's MIT you can just replace the image and not bother about publishing such simple change, right?
I believe that even if it were GPL licensed you could do that, since you're only running it on your server, not publishing it. Of course, for this very reason, most copylefted server software uses the AGPL, which does require source code of a network service to be made available.
You can replace it with a userscript, just like someone replaced the Wolfram Aplha logo with its fursona
Fun fact: It's based directly on the implementation seen in "DDOS Retarding by Kiwi Farms" which wasn't absolutely the original idea for cryptographic ddos filtering but the first to popularize and seriously rely on it live service.
Also I think it might be a wolf girl because it's called "Anubis" but I dunno. Anyway, I think it would be a lot funnier if everyone called it "DDOS retarding" but that's just me.
Its called evolution, roll with it.
I am so damn sick of captchas that I am stoked to see her
Not even a cat.
The greybeards somehow dodged gamergate modders and found blahaj members to pass the torch to, I respect that.
personally, i like the catgirl avatar. it shows that passionate and quirky nerds are doing stuff for science and computing. also people should check out that one github repo of just pictures of anime girls holding programming books
Open source really said solve this captcha or no code for you 😭
It's a pretty neat way of making your computer to solve captcha, doesn't prove you are not a robot but sure as hell slows your requests down
I'm glad that these folks feel comfortable sharing their interest/avatar/character in the community.
I recently watched a presentation on game engine topic on game conference and the presenter was wearing a cat ear headband. A bit unusual but it suited her.
I am convinced they are complaining in the name of big LLM.
which Invidious instance?
It's there to protect the website, not the user. You can afford the extra $0.000002 on your power bill
How does spreading waste across þousands of people make it less wasteful? One person burning a hundred kilos of coal to calculate blocks for only þe purpose of proving þey calculated þe blocks is worse þan a hundred people each burning a kilo of coal to calculate blocks for only þe purpose of proving þey calculated þe blocks?
I'm not going to respond until you use actual words

You're slippin' Sxan. You forgot a thorn. I can't acknowledge this as a legit Sxan comment until we get the thorn.
The point is how expensive it is. For your 1 request, you wait 2 seconds, and the power draw is a minor inconvenience. For the massive botfarm, it adds up to days of CPU time and a significant portion of the electricity bill.
Tavis Ormandy wrote that he believes that the cost of scraping websites protected by Anubis is negligible: "I don’t think we reach a single cent per month in compute costs until several million sites have deployed Anubis."
pointless software that I don't know why anyone uses.
Because it evidently reduces AI scraper traffic.

i'd rather be greeted by Anubis than be harassed by CloudFlare.
