Organize a club of people enjoying sports broadcasts entering public domain as if they were live

I'm not into sports myself, but I hear a lot of people complain about predatory subscriptions to professional sport streaming servicies, intrusive gambling ads, etc. Organize free internet streaming of old broadcasts right as they enter public domain (50 years after broadcast in UK) and pretend they are going live, do discussion, bar cheering, all the things sports people do to entertain themselves, for free.

Nobody wants to watch old matches though. Maybe a famous cup win on an anniversary or something, but generally it wouldn't work if you know the result beforehand.

It's not just knowing the outcome, it wouldn't be nearly as fun of a viewing experience. The quality of play is often really bad by modern standards, to say nothing of the video and audio quality.

to say nothing of the video and audio quality.

This is a big one. The games are going to look, and sound like shit. Good luck following a puck in an NHL game pre-HD.

Most fans will know the historic results anyway for any game worth watching. Spoilers aren't involved.

If the matches are old enough and not major matches (e.g. championships), most people aren't going to know the outcome without looking it up. Do you know any normal season games from 1970 MLB?

Anything post-season would be a tough sell though.

I watch old school NFL games all the time. I don't remember who won a game from 1986.

Instructions unclear: AI-generated sports matches.

For better or worse, this seems inevitable.

"now up to the plate we've got a rookie making his debut, Mr. Barry Bonds"

Yeah, no. This doesn't work.

Isn't the appeal of sports that it's current, like those dudes did that last night and everyone who knows about it knows what happened so they can talk about it at the water cooler. I dunno I don't watch sports and really don't get it at all.

Sounds great! What stadium should I go to to watch a public domain game played live? Is the beer cheaper? Can I shake the players’ hands afterwards? Where do we hold the parade when my local team wins?

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
