Basically the reason Saw is doing the crazy shit is because he's an old guy with cancer and his health insurance said he's too old to get care so they're just gonna let him die. So he starts taking it out on people that are/could be related to the reason he was denied health insurance (in the 1st one I think it's his doctor?)

At least that's how I recall the story

He also targeted people who took life granted, like those with multiple suicide attempts. Which evidently cured them afterwards??

One of the plot points in one of the later movies is that he was too sick to keep doing it so a copy cat started it, but they were selecting innocent people which pissed him off and he killed them.

In a sense I agree with him. You shall be judged by how you treat people who have limited means of retaliation. Like throwing garbage at homeless people, screaming at waiters/waitresses, meaningless petty acts towards retail workers. Fuck you.
