So what are our options if Canada's Bill C-22 becomes law?

3 months ago by Alpha71 to c/piracy

Basically Canada's Bill C-22 (the Lawful Access Act) is proposed federal legislation introduced in March 2026 that expands police and intelligence powers, lowers evidentiary standards for accessing digital subscriber data, and requires tech and telecom companies to build surveillance and data retention capabilities.

It basically means that anyone offering online services MUST retain all user information. Including VPN's

Most VPN providers have threatened to pull out of Canada, but who would want to subscribe to the ones who stay?

Basically, what other VPN like options would a user have?

Our only hope is that it doesn't pass the Canadian Senate (which is unlikely to happen)

Does the bill affect foreign VPN's like Mulvad that is Swedish?

Which reminds me, I need to find another VPN now that Mulvad's owner is funding right wing politics.

I've been using IVPN for almost a week now with no complaints.

yes if you provide services to Canada, under this law they would have to keep records.

But the company is physically in Sweden and you pay the Swedish company in Sweden.

It doesn't seem different than North Korea demanding Canadian internet providers must follow North Korean laws.

I'm not saying it makes sense. I'm just saying this is how they expect it to work.

What can we do to prevent it becoming law?

Edit: '9 hours later'

Nothing? Is it too late?

  1. Most people do not give a shit at all and live in ignorance. Just us fringe tech enthusiasts in the know. So global governments aren't fearing any pushback or outrage from the public.

  2. Billionaires, corporations, governments want to do this globally. It's clearly an organised push.

Nothing? Is it too late?

Yes. In my opinion. Use the internet less.

So my non scientific understanding is this affects the business operations of VPN providers mostly and server deployment less. I assume PsiPhon, Windscribe and others move their billing to a less draconian jurisdiction.

Got to say, damn, I just subscribed to Windscribe recently to circumvent authoritarian Australian government surveillance ...
