VLC is Wrongly Blamed for Microsoft Defender's Clumsiness

6 days ago by cm0002 to c/opensource

VLC takes a long time to play MP3 on Windows? Blame it on Microsoft Defender, not VLC.

If there is a question between if an issue is caused by a free and open source project, or a paid product that is made by one of the biggest companies in the world. I always place blame on the paid product by default, and I start troubleshooting from there.

Tends to go: Open-source projec: "We do not break production." Closed source for profit: "If we make this change that will break some of production, will it still be profitable?"

The dependencies in Arch got weird. But I think that's because the ffmpeg library got weird?

imagine being an established dev, and a creative one at that, and making the basic mistake of thinking a software issue you encountered is the norm for everyone, and it must first be the software's fault

Wasn't Blow the guy who quit game development because he couldn't take any criticism and would rail on people in public forums for not liking his hit game?

No, that was Fish who made Fez, announced Fez 2, then crashed out after some poor communication on his part and left.

from what I see, the onus of fixing it lies on the Microsoft side. And from what I know about Microsoft, they won't do a thing.

Are we just going to pretend Microsoft didn't do this in purpose? They see VLC as a far superior product to their own software, so they purposely made it run like shit to make morons like Blow here switch back to media player. This is pretty poor behaviour from what is supposed to be an operating system.

This is how Microsoft does business

Its how they've been doing business since its inception some 5 odd decades ago

Its why I've hated them all my life

Hell, look into Linux sco Microsoft

Microsoft is a bunch of criminals in a suit

They’ve been doing this shit for years. Windows 3 had the AARD code, windows 9x would throw fake bluescreens if QuickTime was installed, and so on and so on.

What a horrendously stupid tweet. I find everything that follows is stupid and problematic too.

VideoLAN calling them disrespectful, when it was more than that. Someone saying it works for them on Linux, so it must be Windows (not evidence, could still be VLC). Article suggesting Defender exclusion, without mentioning the security implication. Original person doubling down, saying VLC should or has to fix the Defender issue (like they did for an AMD crash).

Insane...

Not sure about VLCs responses, but the original post and several other comments ( including the article ) read like ragebait. I'm tired of ragebait, man.

you are correct, everything in thatvarticle ia stupid. but his first tweet was being more if a dick than stupidity. he enjoys being a dick.

i have a better response to him thn anyone else gave. vlc is orovided as open source , a community effort. for a oerson who not only coded ebtire game by himself but also created a programming language., he can pull down vlc and fix his problem... if its so fixable.

It is my music player on Android actually. Not because its so good but because every other OpenSource player I tried lacked something for me that VLC had. Or they were just heating up my phone for no reason while just playing music, which is kind of a massive no for me.

I mostly use it for CDs when not watching videos/DVDs since I know like zero other software I can use that isn't specifically for windows or can detect the CD in my USB disc drive.

Works like a charm, minus the maybe second, second and a half, audio glitch at the beginning of a song.

I thought about using it to play music a couple of years ago, but it lacked gapless playback which ruined some albums for me, so I discarded it.

Both things can be (and likely are) true. The issue is caused by Microsoft, and the VLC developers should address it. And not by instructing people to exclude it from AV scans.
