How to build a tiger trap: first you dig a hole, then you fill it with ashes, and finally line the outside edge with peas... So, when be comes to take a pea, you kick him in the ash-hole!

Experts say they're worried it will go sideways real fast.

Ah jeez, I almost got away with not explaining this one. Alright, you got me, here goes:

A guy sees a kid playing with a welder's mask on sitting by the side of the road trying to hitch a ride. He picks him up and, gradually - as if testing the waters - starts asking increasingly sexual questions, like "do you know what a blowjob is, do you know what a pedophile is", et cetera. If you're telling this joke right, then by the time you get to the punchline the mood in the room is tense and grim, nobody's laughing - right? It sounds like something terrible is about to occur. Then the kid opens up the welder's mask and delivers the punchline I quoted above as if to say why is this idiot asking a dumb kid all these technical welding questions? It gets laughs, but mostly due to the relief everyone feels when it's over.

It's one of those jokes that kind of torments the audience, which is why it popped into my head when she posted "be nice, tell good jokes". If you get the reference, it's laughably out of place. Definitely not so funny it's worth explaining, but since the reddit posts that explain it have all been deleted I decided to give the rundown for general posterity.

How about the opposite as well? Understand that a lot of people deal with trauma by joking about the topic and that if someone makes a joke you deem to be inappropriate you're capable of simply ignoring it instead of making it a big deal.

Dude. You can’t ask people to ignore offensive jokes while simultaneously pre-excusing yourself for anything you might say because of trauma.

Know your audience. Don’t be surprised if someone calls you out for being a jerk. Your trauma doesn’t excuse your treatment of others either.

You’ve been stuck on this for days now. If the fediverse is telling you that your jokes are inappropriate, then maybe it’s time to listen and adjust.

I wasn't saying anything about myself, I was saying that instantly assuming someone making a joke you don't like is a bad person and feeling justified in attacking them is the opposite of being caring and welcoming.

Black people get called racist, gay folks get called homophobic, cancer survivors get called evil and insensitive all for making jokes about how they've been treated by society. Not even by other people who have been through the same, but by people who haven't lived through it trying to show how righteous they are online by jumping on someone they know nothing about the minute they see something that makes their hair trigger feel justified in doing that.

Well, some black people are racist. Candace Owens. And some gay people are homophobic. Republican senators. And I will bet you money that some people who survive cancer are also evil.

And if anyone makes a bigoted/insensitive joke, they should absolutely be called out for it.

You're missing the point. If you want to actually be accepting of others and welcoming you need to understand nuance and actually know something about a person, not jump on them for a joke that is clearly a joke or an attempt to laugh about a difficult topic.

It's the assumption that you're a good person and anyone telling a joke you see as potentially problematic must be a bad person and feeling instantly justified in jumping on them with hate. It's like screaming at a person you know nothing about beyond their skin tone about cultural appropriation of things from a culture you don't belong to or know much of anything about.

There's a huge difference between actually speaking up for people and against actual racism and jumping on someone based on your own assumption to show what a good person you are and because you feel justified in letting out some hate at someone you've decided must be bad and doing that feels good.

And it's extremely funny that your go to for racist black people was Candace Owens.

Agree. Anything can be a trauma. That means we just cannot do joke about anything ?

Trauma for yourself should not becomes trauma for others. If you can't handle a joke, you should work on your trauma. It's not by avoiding the subject that it will go better.
