cw: this might destroy quite a few illusions

after thinking about it for a long time, i cannot identify as a kitty cat, because i cannot accept meat to be my natural primary source of calories. oh how cruel it is to depend on killing others just to sustain yourself.

i do agree with the naps though. :3

You can identify as a vegan kitty cat.

There are vegan sources for taurine I think? Like a vegan diet for cats is possible afaik? Also it's in monster energy so you can lean into that trans stereotype heavilyyy~

Probably gonna get some hate for this, but you know, there's no scientific basis to argue that cats cannot thrive on a vegan diet, if all nutritional needs are met. We really don't have solid data available, but what we have doesn't allow for that conclusion and while there are caveats which should be considered (urinary acidity, formulated foods not being as nutritionally sound as they claim), it actually may have health benefits, too, much like a vegan diet for humans.

I don't think you're wrong but for anyone thinking about feeding their cat a vegan diet: dont. The no solid data is important and it would require a special diet that you cant get currently.

I really wonder, what makes you say that?

We do have guidelines from authorities about what nutritional values cat food should have and manufacturers usually claim their product follows these guidelines.

Now I'll give you that - they've been shown to be full of shit often - but that's actually true for both vegan and meat-based formulas. Meat-based even comes with its own set of problems and related health issues, like food containing rotten meat and plastic packaging.

Manufacturers should be put under real scrutiny to make sure their product always contains all the necessary nutrients, vegan or not.

Most catfood that you can buy in the shops is actual trash. Anything containing grain should be avoided. The good stuff doesn't really cost much more if you buy it in bulk and the cats don't need as much of it so you end up using less.

Orijen and Bozita are both good grain free options, if anyone is looking for recommendations.

If cats are feeding themselves, the only time they eat vegetables is when they're having difficulty getting a hairball up. They have evolved to be obligate carnivores and if you're not prepared to feed them meat, get a pet bunny instead.

**Moderator Guidelines**

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
