I wish children’s autonomy was more respected generally. How horrible to do that to your own child over something like hair length.

My kid’s dad pressured him to cut his hair a couple summers back. It devastated my kid. He loves his hair long.

I'm sorry your kid had to deal with that

<3 I take him to his preferred barber each time he wants a trim now to avoid anything like that happening again.

I hope you only have good hair days forever more :)

My parents always said I could do whatever I wanted with my hair if I didn't do drugs or alcohol. It was a surprisingly healthy rule they had for me. Didn't realize at the time why I liked having long hair, I always said it was something, something, I don't like getting it cut. They did make me cut it (not short though) on occasion mostly because I was never taught to properly take care of my hair, so I did let it get a bit unkempt in the past.

This sucks that kids are being forced to cut their hair just because "it's girly". Despite my country and it's society being transphobic, what i hate about living here, somehow literally every other teen and young adult has a nice long hair, and nobody seems to care, which is nice.

Unfortunally i also was forced to cut my hair when i was the kid, so now i will not cut my beautiful long hair ever again :3

It’s insane how people will use having short hair growing up as “evidence” that an AMAB person isn’t really trans—as if:

  1. They have any control over it
  2. Girls can’t prefer short hair

My parents completely shaved my head every summer regardless of how long it was and I remember crying every time.

When they finally gave me a choice over my hair in High School, I always grew it out and only trimmed it when they started making fun of how “shaggy” I looked.

I like keeping my hair short, but that's mainly because it makes wearing over-ear headphones more comfortable for long periods :3

People should pick the style they want tho!

counter-argument: music has a nicer sound to it when it gets filtered through a layer of hair (less sharp noises)

I succumbed to social pressure before and the will of my father to cut them short. I always loved my long hair. They were long and beautiful when I started university (ᮗ͈ˬᮗ͈)ê•€. Too bad I didn't understand I was an egg.

I grew my hair as long as I was allowed to, getting it cut just inside the school rules (off the collar, eyebrows, and ears from K-8; off the collar and eyebrows from 9-12), for ages. I was bullied pretty relentlessly for it, mostly from adults. I eventually caved to the social pressure and cut it short, and hated it. I tried buzzing it and hated it even more. Had it short for probably around 8-10 years because I felt like I didn’t have any other choice.

And now it’s down past my shoulders, and I love it so much đŸ„°

Gonna be honest, having had the freedom to let it grow wild I'm starting to think its not all its cracked up to be

But having enough available length for pigtails and meatball buns? You can't put a price on that. So I put up with accidentally pulling my hair that got caught between me and the matress when I stir in the night

Many days late to this (lurking the comm bored at work lol) but I had the exact inverse-yet-equal experience.

Was forced to have my hair long past my hips, clips and bows dug into my scalp and paired with dresses despite my repeated protests and sobbing. Fought to get it to shoulder length as a child, then ventured to chin length with an undercut in my teens.

Am now euphoric with a swishy/wavy scissor cut and fade. I look in the mirror and wish I could tell twelve-year-old me it gets better, and in a way each day I do.

It’s sad how much of our identities get stuffed into boxes when we’re young :( grateful that I got to unpack that box as an adult, at least.
