Lemmy is the only social media I have, it’s a peaceful life.
YouTube is my other social media and it's getting stale quickly
I degoogled, so I don't login.

I go to youtube website and its just a blank page with a sidebar and a searchbar. My subscriptions are just bookmarked pages of people I follow, or I subscribe through Grayjay.
I want to do the same, but if I'm rehearsing on my own I might be playing along with a YouTube. My music account's history is basically my busking setlist.
I really should download the songs and make a Winamp playlist
I was trying to find background music the other day while I did chores. Unless you know a specifc channel, there's a good chance your search takes you to Aimusic instead of music.
I've been known for having strong opinions from time to time
Why ignore the algorithm? Some of my favorite creators I found through the algorithm (suggested videos, homepage, etc). I just ignore the ones you don't like, you'll see less and less of them.
Example: A few weeks ago it tried to show me videos of Charlie Kirk, I marked them as boring and after 3 attempts it got the message and I haven't seen one since.
I have never really thought of YouTube as social media, but you have a point.
It leaned further into it back during the google+ days. There were feeds that showed your friends activity, comments, reply videos, etc. It's interesting that they went in other directions.
Your friend sounds like an snobbish ass. Just because something is offline doesn't mean it's not mediocre. There are many, many valid criticisms of social media. But when your friend mentions something they enjoy you don't seem very nice when you tell them that what they enjoy sucks. Don't yuck someone else's yum.
We’re friends, though. We’re honest with each other. I want to know his perspective even when we diverge.
So if I love pizza and he hates it, I don’t want my friend to tell me with a coat-hanger smile that he likes pizza too. I want to know how much he hates it with all the adjectives he can muster.
I don't think that was at all the point the friend was making
This kind of inability to accept others’ point of view is why I don’t connect with people much anymore.
When I was younger I had lots of friends who had differing opinions and we had the openness to say “that’s fucking stupid” with each other, explain why and still remain friends.
These days you can slip up just once with a minor non-conforming opinion and people suddenly become unhinged. And I simply can’t take only talking about surface level topics to avoid conflict anymore.
Beat me to it!!! 😁
I knew we were in trouble when Stumbleupon went down.
We need to bring that back. How did they even make money?
I think the lack of money making was why it went down
That would be an amazing open source project. Nowadays, it probably wouldn't even be that hard to make the entire thing.
https://www.boredbutton.com/ is the closest I’ve found. Not open source unfortunately.
I like Cloudhiker
Al Gores internet. It was a good time.
Sounds like someone wants to go back to a website
Where you can log on, log on, log on

It’s like raaaaaiiiiin…
Cue "Only Happy When It Rains" by Garbage
There are now 6 websites.
shit, you got images on your first websites?
lucky.
i don't see where that is implied 🤔
fair!
Yeah, but they were all drawn in Paint. Kids these days don’t have the patience to watch an image load one line at a time.
I don't remember the program, but I remember drawing collaboratively with friends in IRC. Program reminded me of Paint
Never had that, but I remember actually surfing the web of links between pages in the time before search engines.
All word of mouth back then, you would have a friend of a friend tell you about a website they visited. Then as soon as you got home you would pray you remembered the address as text-messaging was not a thing yet.
People were always asking, do you got any good websites when?
Eh, ish. It used to be only four:
Something Awful
Ebaum's World
YTMND
4 Chan
I've heard of those, but never visited because I spent all of my bandwidth at zombocom
I mean they were some of the big ones, though digg, maybe newgrounds and even OG (no subreddits) Reddit was in the mix too
But you're forgetting all the thousands of random phpBB/vBulletin/myBB/Invision/SMF forums run by passionate nerds with only around 20-30 other equally passionate nerds using them
I was hanging out on small phpbb forums and occasionally IRC. I didn't use the internet in English back them though, which probably improved my experience quite a lot.
Something awful and YTMND I've heard about but I have no idea what they were, 4chan is a shit stain, and Ebaum I've never heard of before this comment. So clearly they were not that monopolizing.
There are Facebooks I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some 4channer, not for better
Some have E-baum and some remain
All these places had their moments
Geocities and friends, I still can recall
Zombo dead and some are living
In my life, I love Lemmy more
Weebls stuff
Images loading pixel by pixel, line by line, took ages. I don't think I ever saw one full full-size photo for the first few years I was online.
Porn sites were a experience. I would load the first 1/6th of the image and be done. The rest was up to the imagination.
I was basically a crude LLM where I had to generate the rest of the image with minimal input.
I remember when we started getting images
I'm in jerboa, and if I click on the link/broken image symbol the image loads. I haven't checked web interface but I can later.
It's a quirk of some sites. Or using mp4, idk.
I remember watching the Netscape animation in excitement waiting for something cool to load in the browser window even if it was probably "under construction" 🚧
Haven't felt anything like that sitting in front of a computer in a very long time.
I wonder if kids now ever feel like that in front if the computer anymore. Its all just short dopamine hits with every scroll.
I can remember my first dick pic. I, 15, met some guy in his 30s in some yahoo chat room. I remember waiting so patiently to see what he looked like. As that's what I thought the photo was.
He told me he would buy me a plane ticket to see him.
How sweet.
Line by line. Waiting. Waiting. Another line.
A blurry dark photo. Hard to tell what it was.
Another line of pixels . Another.
The anticipation..
Another line.
Oh. Hey. Ya, pretty sure that's a dick. Cancel that.
A similar but also opposite experience in many ways: I vividly remember me and a friend (teenage boys, mid 90s) waiting for a picture of a naked lady on some website, slowly loading line by line. Took forever. Finally it failed when it got to her chest, just above the boobs we wanted to see 😢

I mentioned a meme I saw to a friend of mine and it turns out he doesn’t have social media at all. He just said “The mediocrity of it…” and we went back to talking about other stuff again.
He had a point.
