Handover

I just quit my job. We have a dotnet application running that I didn't write, but I'm the only one who knows a little dotnet, so I took care of it. My handover will be this, or "learn dotnet".

I just watched the episode of The Office where Michael drives his car into the lake because the GPS told him to turn right. LLMs will brrr you right into the lake and it will be your fault for trusting it

As long as insurance covers it, do we really need to care? If there's a big problem, insurers' lobby groups will get the law changed

Learning .NET is easy, the hard part is understanding the business. You can buy books or training for whatever language, but once the people who thought up the logic of the system leave, all you can do is archeology.

The business:

Sure, but you need to do something for that money. You’ll probably have docs for what, but you’ll often need to dig through the code for the how.

I don’t know what it feels like to unearth ancient Roman artifacts, but finding out that weird process nobody understands is actually just dead code is a lot of fun! It’s not a bad career route.

This is gramatically correct in some languages with double negatives, such as Czech.

Yeah, but that's not Czech written there...?

Could have been a dumb translation from one of such languages... like on this piece of military equipment made in the Czech Republic

I mean, it's grammatically correct right as is. Do not what? never switch off. Ie, you gotta turn it off once in a while. Sounds like most of the piece of shit leaky software I have under my responsability right now...

Seems to be a general feature of Slavic languages.

Although it would prolly be "never do not"

Czech has nearly free word order. You can put "nikdy", "nevypínejte" and "server" in any order, depends on context and what is emphasized but this one is indeed preferred.

Double negatives are fun! It's a little weird how, depending on the context and language, they can either be positive or extra-negative. "I don't see nothing!" is often used to mean you can't see anything, the double negatives reinforce each other rather than cancel out into a positive meaning. Similar for "I don't have no ..." or "we don't need no ..."

I don’t see nothing!

Isn't this something that only means so, in the recently developed dialects?

I mean if it were instead, "> I don’t see nothing.", I would understand it as the person is actually seeing something.

For me, it's a phrase with either meaning, dependant upon the tone in which it was said.

I took over a project recently. I asked for updating instructions... as in "once I make changes, how do I push to prod?"

They gave me instructions on how to update angular and dotnet packages.

Mother FUCKERS.

I spent time digging around the code, setting up my dev env, and then I noticed dev and prod had a slight difference.

"yeah, we gave you the wrong branch"

Fuck.

I had to dig around and find out how they started the docker on prod and then I could replace the .dll and restart the container. It was not fun.

No can do. It's for someone who I owe big to, and the company that created the software has gone out of business.

Unless you have a position open for a full stack dev/SDET.

I once took over a project. The guy left in bad terms. Took off with the credentials of his virtual machine, on which was the latest build of the project. Tried to download and build on a different machine. Did not work. Nobody knew how to. Never found out, fuck that noise I left within a month. Oh, and they were starting to use git. Fifteen fucking years, they had been selling their software. No versioning at all.

Play it safe. You never know how long you'll have the chance, so best to switch if off immediately. It's the only way to be sure.
