The unspoken contract is: today you bike where I walk, tomorrow I walk where you bike, and we dont get angry at each other because cars exists and fuck them amirite.

Not really. The whole point of bike infrastructure is so we can move a still dangerously high speed traffic OFF of pedestrian areas.

Basically:

  • if people cycle on the pavement, they go slow to not hit people
  • if people cycle on the bike road, they go fast because they don't expect people to be walking around.

But yeah, do fuck cars.

ye but cyclers should expect pedestrians wandering there (unless its like denmark-style infra with fences, traffic lights and stuff). In most places they take an already not that enormous pavement, cut it in half and expect pedestrians to lane themselves 🤷‍♀️

all Im asking is some patience before jumping to assumptions other people are inconsiderate assholes

If not getting mad over a cyclist driving on a pavement and vice-versa makes me entitled, then I guess I am entitled 😔

In China, they can have a 6 lane median divided highway, a median divided lane for electrics, kei cars, motorcycles, etc, a median divided lane for bicycles, and 15 feet of sidewalk, and the cars still drive and park on the sidewalk.

It's all about whether the state is willing to enforce the rules. Most drivers will think twice about it if there's a nonzero risk of getting a fine worth 2 weeks of their income.

I think its better to mold human behavior via urban design, draconian fines will just make it harder for the government to get anything positive done by making people who got pushed further into economic precarity while they weren't harming anyone oppose it.

Tons of people end up in situations where 2 weeks income means choosing between food and homelessness.

Bollards preventing cars from going on sidewalks, the removal of street parking, and creation of parking garages/fields integrated into the public transit network (or just a shitton of bicycle/scooter shares) is a better solution.

Correct, urban design drives behaviour. Chicanes, bump outs, physical lane dividers (soft posts), raised intersections, etc.

This stuff costs money to design and implement, but it pays for itself over time when the city has to deploy fewer resources for enforcement and crashes.

This is why we need protected bike lanes

For some reason there’s always a couple walking side-by-side incredibly slowly over the painted bike lane signs.

Reads like your city infrastructured wrong.
Nonbicyclists should be adversed from using bicycle infrastructure if there proper hostile architecture to all other forms of traffic than bicycles.
