PSA: part of your Kagi subscription fee goes to a Russian company (Yandex)

Unacceptable.

Yandex represents about 2% of our total costs

I'm a long time Kagi subscriber, this is not just to criticize, I would like to have other people's opinions.

Financing Yandex never sat right with me.
Now with the recent attacks on Yandex servers and the perceived decrease in activity of far right accounts I'm even more wary about paying for Kagi. I'm otherwise very happy with the service provided, and it will be difficult not to rely on it anymore.

I'm still waiting for a clearer picture. It might be misinformation.

There are however reports that MAGA, Afd, Reform UK and Musk posts media presence and public engagement has dropped.

Yea, it's a sucky situation. At least they're not actively investing into Yandex, it's just a source (like Google) for the search results. Though since it's a paid service, the most likely way to make em stop is to express your displeasure and vote with your wallet, and if enough people do that then it'll cost less to stop using Yandex than it does to ignore unhappy (potential) customers

Customer for over a year now and I don’t love this, but I feel like Kagi sits at the intersection of private enough and high performing enough. I tried a lot of the other suggestions for engines before switching and Kagi gave the best results from my testing.

Have you tried Qwant? I started using it last spring and I've had no problems so far.

Qwant is fine, though its results and interface are inferior imo, plus it has ads and keeps nagging to install its stupid extension

I got around the ads by running it through Firefox with uBlock Origin, and the only annoying thing for me is the occasional banners telling me to install their app

I tried it just now and compared the same search terms on Kagi and Qwant.

Kagi gave me what I was looking for as the top result (technical documentation)

Qwant gave me an ad as the top result and an AI summary as the next result. Only after both of those did I get the result I wanted (below the fold).

I’d rather just pay for a search engine that I don’t have to install additional stuff to fix.

Just cancelled my subscription and then deployed a Degoog container. Let's see how it goes...
