I hate to say this but reddit probably doesn't care if r/piracy stays dark. We were probably one of the subs they were hoping to get rid of.

With that said i support the movement. The biggest loss is the institutional knowledge since we can't just search for an old post

Is there a mirror of the sub? It'd be great if we could mirror the content here.

It's why this blackout has been a blessing, since piracy days on reddit were numbered anyways. I'm glad we got to get our community elsewhere before being randomly banned before there was an opportunity to regroup.

Have had many lost communites like megaupload back in the day that reddit killed off. With how helpful the piracy community has been with stuff like the wiki Reddit would have set their eyes on us anyways in the long run.

I agree fully except with the mirror aspect. Mirroring is what tends to cause the dissolution of alternatives like Lemmy. It makes it too convenient and a target by bigger powers. It is federated but that doesn't mean it's invincible. It would be smart to keep it separate and try to let it become its own thing. Grassroots promotion may be the way to go. I mean, I agree, mirroring would be nice and convenient, but we have to be smart and use tact as well.

We have something wonderful here. Let's keep it going long and strong! 😀

Hello everyone! This is my first Lemmy post. :)

I 100% support a permanent shutdown of r/Piracy, but at the same time, I think it would be very useful if the contents of r/Piracy were made available elsewhere for archival purposes. Could the sub be temporarily reopened in read-only mode to allow for it to be scraped? Or is it already available somewhere?

path: 0 183068, hotness: undefined, score: 26, children: 6
db0 25 points 3 years ago

I might consider doing that on the 30th

Yes, only for the purposes of archival and so people who aren't aware of /r/piracy being reborn like a phoenix on lemmy can find us. But, never unrestricted.

We'll probably need more than one day if the archive includes all of the threads (which also include a lot of good information) and not just the wiki. There is this Reddit importer that can take post and comment data scraped from the Reddit API and import it into Lemmy, but because of the volume of data, it will take a while before the scraping is complete by July 1st.

I'm not going to re-import /r/piracy into lemmy. I am probably going to put /r/piracy into restricted mode eventually

I agree, r/piracy should not be added into Lemmy. It should be separate. Perhaps some kind of archive could be made at some point and made into a torrent or hosted somewhere. Restricted would probably be fine.

Glad to see that /r/piracy has some fucking balls. 48 hours won't do a damn thing. It makes me sad because I love Reddit. Always have, but this shriveled up dickbag, Spez, royally fucking over 3rd party devs by pricing out their apps and even removing the ability to have NSFW content be viewable on their apps is a royal slap in the face in the highest degree.

I understand that as a business you need to turn a profit (I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Capitalist), but completely pricing 3rd party devs out of the market and making mods (who are all VOLUNTEERS btw) use the bullshit, clunky ass first party modding tools aint it. I heard rumor that they would allow 3rd party modding tools and bots via LTT, but I trust nothing.

That can move elsewhere. and reddit can be left to rot.

I always liked this one from Peter Pan:

Ohhhh! A pirate's life is a wonderful life

A-rovin' over the sea

Give me a career as a buccaneer

As the life of a pirate for me

Ohhhh! The life of a pirate for me

Ohhhh! A pirate's life is a wonderful life

They never bury your bones

For when it's all over, a jolly sea rover

Drops in on his friend Davy Jones

Ohhhh! His very good friend Davy Jones

Ohh, a pirate's life is a wonderful life

You'll find adventure and sport

But live every minute for all that is in it

The life of a pirate is short

Ohh, the life of a pirate is short

Ohh, a pirate's life is a wonderful life

Without a care to behold

You carry a gun and a jug of rum

And your pockets are loaded with gold

Oh! Your pockets are loaded with gold

Ohh, a pirate's life is a wonderful life

"But not forever," they say

When your neck's in a noose and you can't get loose

For the life of a pirate you'll pay

Ohh, the life of a pirate you'll pay

Ohh, a pirate's life is a wonderful life

Without a care to behold

You dig for pleasure to find some treasure

Your pockets are loaded with gold

Oh! Your pockets are loaded with gold

Never thought about how this relates to net neutrality. Reddit was kind of becoming a "common carrier" for information, but as a centralized source it's in their interest to filter content for money's sake. Here in the fediverse the communities (and their data) are cloned but constantly updated across many independently owned servers. So no one server owner can ever really steer the discourse. We just need an official way to migrate a community in the case an instance goes down/stops meeting the needs of the community.

You don't log into the other instances to access their communities. Instead, you log into your local instance and use the search function to search for the target community. Just enter the community name like that: !nameofcommunity@nameofinstance.

Alternatively you can click on Communities at the top (or the equivalent in your app), select "all" and browse all the communities anyone on your instance has ever searched for using the first method.

Federated means separated. There isn't one main big Lemmy like one main big reddit. It's a bunch of little Lemmys, like a bunch of little islands. Each little island is a server. You sign up for each server like it's its own individual forum/site. So like, you don't sign up for an entire platform (all of Lemmy), you sign up for one forum/sublemmy.

It works this way on purpose. It is a good thing. Reddit was on GIANT monstrosity, and yes that is convenient. But it was also convenient for one giant corporation to censor, cheat people, and do whatever they want. Is Lemmy slightly less convenient? Yes. It's a few extra clicks. You have to sign up for different servers. But for those few extra clicks, you gain huge freedom and no one corporation controls the whole thing. Entirely worth it, in my mind, to spend another minute or two. These communities are far too valuable to humanity for me to be stingy about convenience. With convenience, comes loss of freedom and personal power. If we don't do the work, a corporation will do all the work for us and then they'll also take whatever they want from us because of that convenience. They unfortunately sometimes prey on people who want the easiest way possible to do things.

Wait, what do you mean by this? I'm subscribing and commenting all over the Lemmy corner of the Fediverse, and my account is happily sitting on one instance. Is that not the whole point?

@EuphoricPenguin22 @DownloadMode Yes but you login on the instance you created your account on. After you login, you can follow other communities. I'm following a bunch on my Hometown instance.

For me, it goes a layer deeper. I log in to the instance I created my account on and the instance I created. Gotta flex that after paying for hosting and spending several hours learning how to work Ansible.

Whoops, my bad. I'm new here as well, I thought it required individual signups.

I guess it's just individual servers. Sorry 😔😀

Well, it's a good thing. It means that you can have one account like Reddit and Lemmy can still functionally be a decentralized network of smaller severs that communicate with one another.

You don't need to sign up for different instances. You only need one user on one instance, and you can browse, subcscribe, and comment on posts from other instances from your own home instance.

Indefinite blackout is so fucking stupid stance in my opinion. It is between reddit and the owners of 3rd party apps. Let the fucking subs live so we can get what we want from there

Or just get it here... r/piracy was always precariously close to getting banned anyway. I'd be shocked if it didn't get banned before IPO.

What about the users of the third party apps?

switch to the native app. It's better. Tried the third party apps they are not better than the native app

I've been using Relay since 2013, before the official app existed. It is better than the official app in every way: it's UI is cleaner, it's quicker, it's easier to follow comment threads and sort them, etc. Not to mention that there are no "sponsored" posts (ads) and banner apps every other post or comment..

How is the first party app better, exactly?

If the native app was better, you wouldn't have millions of users using 3rd party apps. Apollo alone had 1.5 million users.

you can definitely stop using reddit once the 3rd party app goes dowb btw reddit native app has more than that so either use that or tell your third party creators to pay the money
