Hello fellow ex-tildes user, I hope you find this place more welcoming and less STEM focused 😀
Same reason I stopped using Tildes lol. I liked many of the things Tildes brought to the table... but ultimately, it didn't really offer anything different from Reddit
I would love to see something like r/AskHistorians. It's my favorite sub by far, and something I have really seen anywhere else. It's heavily moderated (in a good way), and the answers are all high quality and sourced. It's pretty much why I held on to my reddit account as long as I have.
Definitely a good one.
I'd like to see a book suggestion community with a decent number of requests. Something like r/booksuggestions or r/suggestmeabook. Most of what I did on Reddit was recommend books in response to requests.
I wouldn't mind seeing a New England community, either. Or Massachusetts one. I'd start one up, but I don't know if I could handle the moderation responsibilities!
CT here. I’d go in if you really wanna!
I'd love to see communities about:
I found !knitting@lemmy.world trying to get off the ground. (hope I got that link formatting right)
Knitting or a unified fiberarts would be fantastic.
Glad to report that r/menopause has moved to c/menopause@lemmy.world
Ooo this is a good question. There was a similar thread about Lemmy as a whole, but Beehaw has a bit different standards...
Honestly, maybe a retro technology community? Set to include both retro gaming and other aspects like retro computing and the like. I'm sure one could use the current tech community for this, but I think setting aside a retro version could be beneficial
Something social, and positive. Like r/roastme had a opposite one called r/toastme. Rather then burn and roast OP, you gave them compliments. It was a positive thing to see.
Well, come to think of it. I guess we are making it right now. Just being here and being kind to what people share, and enjoying the moment of conversation.
I'd really like to see a photography community pop up. Not necessarily a /fujifilm /leica community, but a general photography place for folks to share their snaps, and get advice about techniques and gear.
There's one on Lemmy.
"Indie Products"- a place for people to nerd out about stuff made by small independent makers and for indie makers to find support maybe? I'm not a maker myself but I really enjoy buying from small businesses and finding out about cool products.
Oh this one's a good one. I am always trying to find small independent businesses to use.
Might not be the most popular option but a shitposting sub along the lines of 196/197/19684 is the major one for me. Would also love to see a 3dprinting community, but I kinda think something along the lines of technical hobbies/niches are a best case scenario for new services joining the fediverse.
Ooh that is the kind of content that would really make me feel at home. We need a corner for stupid humor.
For sure! Though I might be mistaken but isn't there already the humor one here? :o
I very much appreciate the recommendation though!
True, but places like 19684 have a certain flavor of humor. It’s like absurdism had a baby with r/dank_memes while occasionally huffing brake cleaner. 😂
Beehaw isn’t ready for it yet as we need to get bigger, but eventually I could see it thriving here.
Haha yeah, that seems a pretty accurate gist of it. You're right though, think its just a thing that will come with time and the number of folk start to necessitate subdividing things a little.
Perhaps a community for people over 50. (Asking for a friend. Honestly.)
Anime, for everything good and holy, please add anime lol
Surprised by this
Anime/manga, and maybe a collector spot? For figures, merch, any physical collections. :)
!sysadmin@lemmy.ml Is gaining some traction
Any and all of the sports subreddits. Nothing brings more user engagement (positive and negative) than game threads for sporting events. The sooner we can get a thriving sports community going, the faster Lemmy or any social media app will grow.
Yep. I'm just happy the stanley cup will be done by the time I get off reddit. Definitely need will need something for NFL tho
That being said, I think those should happen on other instances, not all on beehaw. Its a different philosophy than reddit
It sounds like a decent Lemmy community as a whole, allowing those professionals a lot of control over how questions work and such while still allowing pretty good visibility? I'm not totally familiar with how federating works yet so that might not work as wellw as I'm thinking.
You're joking but currently a discord I'm in has a cult over a specific Garfield Minus Garfield comic, a cult that got genuinely rowdy when the comic stopped being posted.
All I'm saying, Garfield is probably an elder god
Which specific GmG comic is so powerful that it would inspire a cult?

That's a good one
I want equivalents for:
Edit: r/fantasy is the biggest one for me. In effect the subreddit is really more for SciFi and Fantasy, both - and other speculative fiction - and they have a yearly speculative fiction bingo card that's really fun to participate in. It's mostly books in practice but is not exclusively about books.
Disability and anything cat themed
What’s it’s called?
Looking for "local" city and state/province communities. A place to talk about local politics, share information on upcoming events/festivals, talk about traffic and weather.
But reality is Lemmy isn't that big yet. So maybe start regional like how midwest.social is doing and divide it up when activity is too much to handle.
I've made a post on !canada@lemmy.ca listing existing provincial communities! Some are old and haven't seen any activity in a while, and some are quite new! I started a community for New Brunswick, and the person who created /r/pei made a community here as well.
I'll second a 3D printing community! The ones on reddit really helped me a lot when I was starting out with resin printing and nothing worked lol. I feel like without someone to explain how I should be tuning my FEP (and even that I should doing that in the first place) I may have gotten discouraged and just let my printer collect dust
I’ve setup an instance focused on some niche topics and hobbies, there’s not much there yet but here they are if anyone wants!
FFXIV → https://possumpat.io/c/ffxiv

There was a time when /r/youtubehaiku was one of my most visited subs. It would be great to see more short weird videos that give you a little chuckle.
I'm going to miss my small surrealist meme subreddits
I love a good shitpost, but it probably wouldn't mesh with the Beehaw ethos.
Mystery, true crime, or r/RBI type content would be all it takes to solidify my place here. Many of those communities across the web lean into their toxicity, so I’m crossing my fingers for a sane place to engage in discussion and participate in deep dives.
Even more specifically, subs like r/whatisthisthing or r/toyid are fun for people who enjoy some light sleuthing. Anyone know if there’s a Lemmy equivalent or adjacent to any of these?
Same story with me. I would also love to see some paranormal and "glitch in the matrix" type communities.
I’d consider starting one up myself, but I’m so new to all this that I don’t know what all it entails. Does it come with any responsibilities? I’m not great with those…
I would have to imagine you'd at least need a decent moderator or two. If you ever get around to starting one, particularly involving paranormal/glitch/alien subjects, I would be willing to help with moderation. Just let me know! :)
I glanced briefly, but couldn't find a topic on it. What's the stance on NSFW (i.e. porn, art, etc.)?
Most instances (servers) don't allow porn because it needs constant content moderation (laws against CP and other nasty stuff). They simply don't want the liability. But it's not forbidden to create a server that allows/hosts pornographic stuff. I bet we will see some porn servers in the near future.
Thanks for clearing it up. I imagined moderated content along the lines of reddit.
Definitely gonna happen. Reddit are going to ban or quarantine pornographic content sooner or later, and the moment that happens, you're gonna see the major subs set up Lemmy instances or their own standalone sites.
FFXIV, stuff like /r/StoriesAboutKevin and /r/TalesFromTechSupport, and /r/xena
I miss r/actuallesbians, r/MTF, and some obscure gaming communties like r/titanfall, r/Metroid and r/Earthbound.
Oh and the brainrot known as r/okbuddychicanery and r/anarchychess.
The general feel so far I’ve seen on beehaw is that wider communities are preferred - one operating systems community instead of separate Linux, Mac, Windows, etc. Same with gaming. The idea being that wider communities bring more exposure to niche subtopics.
I think it started just from lack of enough users to support more niche communities, but yeah, I'm starting to like it this way too I think. It probably helps avoid the echo chamber effect re. trivial shit, too. This way, it's less likely people will end up in little bubbles just preaching to their choirs or arguing in circles. Maybe.
That makes sense actually.
Really just depends on if users can maintain composure in the face of disagreement (and barring that, moderation that can temper the more... rambunctious members effectively and consistently) as the community grows into a more broad audience. Otherwise the community will just fragment as they always do once civil discussion breaks down from bad faith actors of one flavor or another.
When you put it that way...with that said 1 and 3 don't bother me(although 2 does sometimes), but it might be because I'm 18 :P
r/vegan
And in no way, am I saying I would like to recreate that community, but a vegan friendly space with Beehaw's core values, just sound amazing to me. r/vegancirclejerk was great too, but I had personal issues with the mods.
Yeah, I get that for sure. But for me, anytime you mention vegan or vegatarian stuff on reddit, it was met with downvotes and just a lot of rudeness and misinformation. So sure, maybe right now there isn't a niche space carved out here, but I know everyone here will be respectful. I can post a vegan chicken sandwich and nobody is going to be upset about it, cause its like, not really a big deal at all lol. Reddit though, you can't post veg or vegan things outside those places.
Whatever hyper-specific place lets me rant about how everyone misuses PDFs. ...And a BattleTech sub.
Heck, just generally, I wish Lemmy was more like... spin up a server and you've basically got a subreddit. Rather than having these big mostly-isolated attempts at being everything.
One of my favourites was r/engrish, basically making fun of English misspellings. I couldn't find it so I created it over on https://vlemmy.net/c/engrish Come over and join us and share you favourite misspellings. Already posted a few of my favourites.
Travel-focused communities would be lovely, akin to r/travel and r/solotravel among others.
anime
but at the same time I can see how another lemmy instance could be setup for being more anime/japan stuff oriented
100% , I legit just one a clean community to discuss anime just like the reddit one. I saw the main Lemmy instance has one but I would say it's poorly moderated.
changemyview was fantastic when people were actually open to discussing their view; I witnessed some very thoughtful discussions. Some people would unfortunately hardline their opinion and reply with things like, “Yeah but that doesn’t change my opinion,” and seemed as though they were not actually open to changing their view.
I always liked r/the10thdentist better than r/unpopularopinion, because it did a better of job of having actual unpopular opinions rather than 'opinions that make people angry' or 'popular opinion that opposes this other popular opinion'.
Not that this matters here.
Sidenote: I wish I had an emoji button here on desktop, like I do on mobile. I know a lot of people don't care for emoji, but they're nice to have, seemingly even more popular with younger users than with millenials, and probably a good thing all around to have as an option if what we want is more people using Lemmy.
I really enjoy the specific game based communities but obv that is a bit of an umbrella.
It's really handy for console specific communities too.
I would personally like a fine art related community. Something for critique and discussion of art and art history. It seems like many places I’ve been before turn their nose up at anything abstract or outside the realms of traditional western art.
This sound very similar to r/museum, which I've always enjoyed. Might be a great template for the community you're envisioning.
I'm not sure if it's within scope of beehaw, 'cause I know that the meme page here already asks for people not to upload images directly to save server space (which I totally respect) but I really lurked and enjoyed r/egg_IRL and r/traa and I'm definitely keeping my eye out for where the trans meme share lands.
I was really enjoying r/me_irlgbt lately. And r/traaaaaaannnnnssss (definitely the wrong number of letters here).
I agree the trans memes are valuable, especially these days. They're a hopeful spot in a dark world rn.
Edit: I like r/egg_irl too but it does sometimes have a tendency toward some problems with people calling other people eggs who might not actually be eggs, instead of just talking about themselves. The effect being a weird roundabout gender roles policing.
Yeah, definitely the downside of that community. I'm definitely there for the personal 'this was/is my journey' egg memes, call outs about 'egg like behavior' aren't ok.
Soccer and photography are probably the two main ones that come to mind for me. I'm really happy to see the new writing community, and I'm excited to see more specific creative communities come about.
Crafting communities! I love seeing what people make in r/crochet and r/Brochet and they also tend to have really welcoming and kind users :)
Beehaw's "creative" community fits that description and looks pretty active:
https://beehaw.org/c/creative
Are there any diy communities?
You can also go to the communities tab, change the filter to "all", and type in "DIY" or "Do it yourself" to find it across all lemmy instances (that federate with your instance)
I keep finding myself torn between looking at other instances, and just deciding not to because I think the lack of a downvote button here does wonders for actual discussion, even though it can occasionally be frustrating when if someone is an ass.
Thank you.
Didn't see a Futurama community... So I made one.. Come on over!!! https://lemmy.world/c/futurama
Let me know when you set it up, Îd love to join.
I can't seem to find a movies one, best part of Reddit was looking up discussions of the recently released movies
r/analog, and more generally r/photography
I really like changing my wallpapers, so something for mobile wallpapers. Also, I really enjoyed r/
whatisthisthing for wacky things people found
askdocs and legaladvice for advise on when to seek professional assistance
askreddit (which I see some posts, along with AMA-type things on c/chats)
YouShouldKnow and LifeProTips
Outoftheloop to ask questions for summaries (e.g., Why is everyone talking about Johnny Depp?)
For an askreddit replacement there is an asklemmy community on the lemmy.ml instance !asklemmy@lemmy.ml
Honestly though I hope it doesn't become too much like askreddit. That sub got increasingly repetitive with it's questions (i guess there's only so many questions to ask internet strangers though)
I agree that sub (like most) got repetitive and seemed to engage people on an increasingly superficial level. I guess I would prefer more thoughtful or engaging topics. I did check out the ask Lemmy community and will use that for now.
NBA iphone photography, ask photograpy, beginner photography politics
If the userbase gets bigger a dedicated Tech Support would be nice to see so tech help posts don't get lost in the shuffle.
Media-related communities such as r/plex r/sonarr r/radarr plus the other *arrs and related like plex meta manager
/r/ExMormon
It’s been created on lemmy.world https://lemmy.world/c/exmormon
https://midwest.social/c/vaporwave is a specific one along the lines of synthwave. I also created https://midwest.social/c/synths for any synth players out there. :)
Thanks for the heads up on this! Greatly appreciated, friend.
For me it's all the photography-related communities. Photography, Cinematography, Analog, & Astrophotography are the primary ones.
I'd like to see a community specifically dedicated to tabletop RPGs. Don't think I've seen one of those yet.
If it's represented with in equal proportions it's fine, but generally I agree. I haven't liked a lot of things about 5e, and don't find it interesting.
But thats the great thing about communities. Plenty of us like D&D. and do like seeing the posts.
Tabletop has what i see as 3 main variants which are rather separate communities:
Each has a gazillion little subdivisions, and there's related interests like miniature painting, terrain building, sculpting and others, but i guess a "tabletop" community would do until we grow more
For boardgames we have !boardgames@feddit.de which is pretty new but already has some fun threads. There is also !soloboardgaming@lemmy.ml and !tabletop@lemmy.ml that are not as active yet.
I’ve subscribed over to the rpg community on lemmy.ml so now Beehaw should be federated over to it for interacting with it.
I’d love to see a community for pro wrestling! The industry as a whole has made a lot of progress towards being inclusive. It has a long ways to go of course, but an even longer way for the social media communities to be less toxic and more thoughtful in content and discussions.
/r/hockey is the biggest one that's holding me back from making the leap full time to lemmy.
Agreed, would be nice to have a place to vent frustrations when Vegas inevitably wins the cup this year (Sharks fan)
Bro for real fuck vegas.
Also wanted to add that a comics equivalent would be nice if there isn't one already. I doubt many of the longtime artists would migrate fully, but it would at least be another platform that could get them greater reach.
A “Frets” community would be great, for all the fretted instruments to hang out.
Edit: !guitars@lemmy.world brand spankin’ new
well well well if it isn't a spot to post pictures of my butterscotch telecaster. 😉 Kidding aside, I came here to say this too!!
Something akin to /r/CharacterRant with interesting critique and analysis of media. Most of the same rules would apply and as long as people don't get into flame wars it would be a great fit for Beehaw. It would require a good bit of moderation, though.
oh yes! I used to love astronomy when I was younger. I don't have any dark sky any more, but I'd love to find a smaller scope or binoculars that I could travel with when I escape the city and have a chance at good viewing.
Getting dark sky is very challenging. I live on the outskirts of a city so I usually load up the car and drive. It's a shame but, at the same time, telescopes weren't always so affordable!
I started with binoculars and still use them to take on holiday (the telescope is way too big) and you can have a really great night with them.
There are a few TIL communities! They’re off to a good start, too.
!ukcasual@lemmy.world is awaiting your arrival!
Scuba diving! 🤿
Or just diving / water sports in general (although probably more thought should go into picking the name...). Specifically scuba is probably too niche to make an active community at this point in time, but it feels a little out of place in a more general sports community.
r/scuba was always a fun place to go and see people's cool videos of marine life and underwater selfies, as well as being a good place to ask questions and discuss gear.
I saw it sort of mentioned, but I think niche shitposting communities like the various okbuddy subs.
lemmy.studio might be of interest? That instance is still growing for sure!
Marx-Lenin
Videos/mealtimevideos was a big thing for me. They kept me entertained while I ate lunch, lol.
I agree, a lot of the PC building communities would be nice to have here
A sub for Bike Mechanic stuff - either submit a photo/issue, or brag about new tools kind of thing
There's BikeCommuting@lemmy.ml, which is not exactly what you're asking about (and not on beehaw) but might be a good place for that kinda post in the meantime!
I'm a mod over at that sub - I'm glad you found it and thanks for sharing! Perhaps it might be good to do into to mechanics posts for people to learn stuff that they can do on their own if they are commuters.
I'd love that! I just recently learned how to adjust my own derailure, and even just knowing that's it's something I have control over has made me a lot more aware of how my shifting feels. I'd love to learn more about some simple things like that, that I can maintain on my own without any specialized tools
Lemmy.ml has a privacy community
Same, but I have a feel that Beehaw might not be the place for them considering just how many communities we'd need to cover all of them. I'm really hoping a gaming instance pops up soon that we can federate with, I wanna my r/guildwars2, r/warframe, r/stellaris and others to see the updates and memes
How feasible is it to have communities for game genres, and then within those communities maybe some general topic threads for specific games? That's how I've imagined the fediverse space would accommodate further niche subject matter. Not sure if it's been attempted yet!
I think it'd result in a genre civil war :D Game genres are vague or not properly defined at all, and furthermore many modern games just combine them anyway.
I think if it's a big enough community having an instance for themselves is pretty good. That also lets them split it into memes, modding, lfg, roleplay or other subgroups more easily. I just don't see how would any of these communities actually fund it, it is hard enough to find good mods that volunteer them time to the community, less alone their money too.
Hi there! r/Warframe will have an official home at https://dormi.zone/c/warframe!
(Please tell me you can see posts and comments on here, federation with other instances has been very spotty for me so far)
Nice! I subscribed.
So far I see the Test post and "Look at that accuracy!"
It seems like it takes a bit of time for new posts and changes to propagate through the network. It seems to require someone to actually access it from another instance first to get that going.
/r/games for me. I really like keeping tabs on gaming news.
I'd love to see a communities for: (some of these may be around, but I haven't searched for them yet)
Turn-based RPGs (BG3 for example) Real time with pause would also fit into turn-based.
Action/adventure (TOTK would be here).
JRPG
AmITheAsshole
Communities for the different US states and the biggest city in the state.
ebikes
electric cars
Fitness (a general one and women and men's communities just because the focus is often quite different between the two)
Weightlifting
Nextfuckinglevel
Parrots or pet birds
Birdwatching
Restless leg syndrome (any any other chronic condition like lupus, MS etc)
Uplifting news
Woodworking
Carving (more niche, only carving not furniture making)
Kayaking
Sewing
Photography software and techniques
A View from my Window (or deck, or yard. focus on where you live, not glamor vacation pix)
City Planning (a place to discuss how to get involved in city politics to do things like create biking paths, better sidewalks, etc.)
KindleScribe (or any e-ink device you write/draw on like Remarkable, Boox, Supernote)
Longevity (research focused on health extension and longer life spans)
These may be too specific, but I thought I'd toss them all out there. Sorry for the craptacular lack of formatting. I forgot to hit the list style button.
I know you mentioned that you haven't searched yet, so this may not be the only one out there, but fwiw I noticed the other day that someone set up a JRPG community on the kbin.social instance:
Still in its silent "gathering subscribers" phase since it's such a new instance.
Looks like there's a support thread about this:
https://beehaw.org/post/444366
I'm not sure Kamirose (in that thread) is right, but if so then maybe this URL will work after a while (now that we've searched):
https://beehaw.org/c/JRPGs@kbin.social
I have another hunch, but it's a little more convoluted. For a proper answer, I think we'd need to ask someone who knows Lemmy itself well.
https://beehaw.org/c/tech@kbin.social pulls a few recent threads. The issue could possibly be that the JRPGs community equivalent on KBin has zero threads and Microblogs do not appear to sync, so there is nothing for Lemmy's search to find.
FFXIV, stuff like /r/StoriesAboutKevin and /r/TalesFromTechSupport, and /r/xena
thanks for using Leebra!
