Germany turns first asylum seekers away at border
a year ago by schizoidman to c/europe
It's absolutely not illegal to look for a better life in another country. What IS illegal is crossing the border without using the proper immigration procedure.
Seeking refuge is different from immigration... the right for asylum is there to give you the opportunity to escape a dangerous place and stay TEMPORARILY in another country
Nobody is illegal
I hate this so much...
The thing is: YOU might not be "illegal", but entering your neighbors house without his consent indeed is illegal.
What would you do if a random number of strangers would tomorrow at noon decide that it would be a great idea to just enter your house?
There is a huge difference between your house and a country.
Then at least they should start saying "people who illegally immigrate" or something like that, because "illegal immigrants" does make it sound like its the people themselves who are illegal and that rhetoric only serves the far right
Yes.
Do you honestly think this is a “gotcha”?
The right to asylum was put into the constitution because many victims of the holocaust where denied entry to other counties before getting rounded up and killed.
If a stranger is running down the street, chased by a guy with a blood soaked knife, would you let them in?
Edit: spelling
Many of the people coming to germany are not in danger tho. Which is a requirement for asylum.
Nah, they just believe we'll be making 300.000 additional kids a year instead.

shrugs Either not answering or answering in English seems like an option. I do understand that the latter feels weird though. But helping/allowing threads of German-only comments to form, unrestricted, is going to make this place markedly worse for anyone who does not speak German.
True. Sorry.
The issue is that colonialism has depleted the resources of many countries and destabilized them, thus making them unsafe for many today Of course people will try to stay alive by fleeing those conditions. And it's outrageous to turn them away. Us westerners have it good BECAUSE they have it bad. Doesn't matter that nobody alive today is responsible for colonialism.
There's other problems too of course. Like the war in the Congo has nothing to do with a lack of resources and everything to do with greed over the plentiful resources. Also ethnic disputes.
You're describing symptoms, the commenter above you spoke about the causes.
Immigration is an issue too.
Immigration drives up rents in cities while at the same time giving the economy cheap labour and keeping wages down.
As long as immigrants are not guaranteed the same wages as citizens and are not distributed across the country, including the country-side, immigration is a net negative. The only ones profiting are employers and retirees.
I will not accept this injustice as long as bavarians and swabians are still free to roam germany as they please.
Disappointing but not surprising.
This legitimizes the argument to those "promoting" and benefiting from making immigration a central political issue. Not smart.
I fear we already crossed that line some time ago when the established parties used immigration as the scapegoat for pretty much everything that supposedly goes wrong in the country. Now it's really hard to go back.
Bild reported that over two days, authorities also detained 14 smugglers, carried out 48 open arrest warrants, and apprehended nine individuals under extremism laws targeting hard-left, far-right, and Islamist ideologies, among others.
Holy shit. Two days. Imagine how many more criminals and terrorists they're going to find if they retain this policy. Previously these people just came and went as they pleased.
Yeah, that totally sounds like a lot in a country of 84m. /s
I don’t understand what you’re arguing. That because Germany has 84M people they should just let smugglers, people with open arrest warrants, terrorists, and extremists into the country as they please? Why? That seems crazy to me.
I am saying that it does not sound like a very effective measure.
There are, give or take, 2m crime suspects per year in Germany--while many are likely counted twice, the number still gives an idea of the dimension. That makes roughly 5500 criminal suspects per day. 70 suspects/2d is 0.6% of that.
In addition, I find it exceedingly likely that they caught a bunch of low-level people who didn't care to protect themselves but missed out on higher-level, systemic cases they'd have caught given a different personnel allocation.
I see, so you believe it has low benefit for the cost? Surely you would need to know the cost (e.g. number of personnel deployed) to make that judgement?
I would also caution you against attempting to hide big numbers behind even bigger numbers. 35 arrests a day is 12,775 per year. That might not be a proportionally big number, but it is a big number. Especially when we remember that the majority of violent crime is committed by just 1% of the population. Detecting and arresting criminals is often even more effective than harsh sentences.
I think criminals of all levels should be appropriately punished. Otherwise the law should change to reflect what is and is not criminal.
And how many potential retirement fund payers got turned away? How many nurses to wipe your ass once you're old?
Of course you're going to find more people with an arrest warrant on them if you check every single person. That's a no-brainer. But what are you paying for that?
It doesn’t look like any were turned away, but please correct me if you have another source. In this case it’s hard to imagine those smugglers and terrorists were about to turn their lives around and begin taking care of elderly people.
Is this really coming to Lemmy now? Jesus, wtf

Even if you would think that were a good thing - which I don’t - there is no business case justifying spending all this money on border controls, impacting travel, increasing congestion and pollution just to ’catch’ 19(!) “illegal” immigrants. Even the numbers don’t add up.
Also: Nobody is illegal!
