“Downloads”… that’s what we’re calling it now
Those are rooky numbers. /s
45TB used out of 77TB total on my NAS.
Granted, I only need to back up about 5 TB of that, so that does make my life easier. At this point, I’ll have to start building custom drive chassis if I want to keep expanding. There is always more to save…
Edit: LOL, saw your other post below where you say your full storage capabilities are in the 170TB+ range. I respect the power of your thuum!
Yep, I have quite a bit of storage lol
The primary NAS has 7x 6tb SAS HDDs
Backup has 4x 8tb shucked SATA HDDs
And the DC hosted one has 5x 12tb SATA Water panther drives. They were relabeled Seagate RMA drives.
That's actually a difficult question to answer
On my main rig I have 3 TB of space, 1 of which is an M.2 the rest are SATA SSDs. But it has access to my NAS†
Then there's the secondary rig that runs my 3D printing corner which has 1 TB of space and also has access to my NAS†
†My NAS is a bit special, it has about 44TB of space in RAIS Z2, this thing is connected to all of my devices.
I have plans to update my NAS to something less power hungry as it's currently running on a 12 year old hunk of server hardware with dual CPUs and 192GB of RAM.
Edit: Spleling and slight clarification
Idk if those are available but yea, ive definitely thought about it xD
The output is a little nice for the purpose of the meme imo using df, rather than lsblk
From experience i can safely say you never have enough
Started with a 250gb hdd in a laptop Moved to a 1TB hdd PC, Added a 500GB SSD… I am still using both as extra space but i added 3 TB nvme
I also build franksteined server pc wich has about 12GB of hdd space (but only 8TB which i consider safe for important files)
It is never enough.
When i had that original 250gb it felt Much larger then all the space i have now.
500 GB SSD as main boot and application drive
500 GB SSD as one game drive
2 TB SSD as second game drive (added after 500 GB one filled up)
1 TB HDD as bulk storage (had it for many years now)
1 TB HDD for photographs (also had for many years)
2 TB RAID array for video editing
8 TB external HDD for backup
So 7 TB internal, and 8 TB backup
I have a 4TB NVMe and a 2TB NVMe for 6TB total.
As for my NAS, I have 160TB lol, but that's not mainly for games.
Only around 2T of NVMe on my gaming PC.
My NAS has around 140T total. (128T spinning rust, the rest is NVMe).
Along with another 10T of NVMe in my proxmox cluster.
This is skewed as I do video editing, but I have a casual 112TB external raid array in addition to the 56TB in my machine. That’s not including the NAS, backups, or the other machines. Between all of my machines plus on and off sight backups, I’m probably just shy of a PB.
I have
240g ssd
500g boot drive m.w
2tb barracuda
12 tb server drive (got it for abour 120)
I have a 256GB “OS” SSD 1 TB SSD for games 2 TB HDD for longer term storage
My computer is pretty old. When I eventually upgrade I’ll do a 1TB nvme os and one for games with a 5TB hybrid storage I think.
Total is about 11TB:
1x 2TB SSD
1x 1TB SSD
2x 4TB HDD
250GB boot SSD, 2TB internal HDD, 4TB external HDD. Fortunately I haven't had to install any AAA games recently, because all of them are pretty much full.
Boot drive is 1TB. Currently 176GB free with 21 games installed (BG3 is definitely the largest lol) and all my other non-gaming stuff.
Also have a combined 30TB in external HDD's (with about 1TB free) as my PC is also a Plex server, but that's not game related (well cept roms lol).
2TB SSD main drive. And a 2TB HDD file history drive.
I have 1 TB of nvme storage on my main machine (one ssd). I upgraded a few months ago and I need more storage.
My XBOX has the internal 1TB then 4TB of USB3 storage for 360/XBOX One games (or Series games I'm not currently playing). Main PC is 500GB SSD Raid 0 System drive, 1TB NVMe data drive and a 6TB HDD Storage Space. Then my NAS has 20TB (RAID 5) of space for everything else. (Including a full set of install files of any games I bought via GoG since you can keep their DRM free install files just in case GoG suddenly disappear)
500GB. I wanted to get more storage but then i realized that with 1gbit internet connection, i dont need it, i can download whatever i want in a few minutes. Fast internet is a game changer, it allows me to try and test games without thinking about it.
I also have a 2tB hdd for media but i dont use that to store games.
All you need
My PS5 has 3.5 TB. 1TB internal, plus 2TB NVME, plus 512GB external.
My PC has 1TB NVME for windows, a 2TB NVME game drive, a 512GB NVME I'm not really sure what for yet, a 4TB SATA SSD backups drive, and 2TBs SATA SSD for media/downloads/older games. I also have an external 8TB HDD fo backups. So 9.5 TB of SSDs and 8TB external.
SSD prices have dropped massively lately. You should get a 2TB NVME drive, which you can easily find for $100 or less.
And that last point is why I get so irritated when it costs $150 to upgrade from 256GB to 512GB on a phone.
Pc has 4 TB of SSD Storage, 2 M.2 drives one SSD, then a 2 TB HDD for 6 TB total
PC: The laptop has a half a terabyte SSD, and 2 TB USB HDD for Steam games. (Plus a boatload of other storage for other purposes.)
Xbox Series X: 1 TB internal, two additional 1 TB storage cards for X/S games, a 4 TB HDD for Xbox One and Xbox 360 games, and a 2 TB USB HDD for cold storage of X/S games.
Nintendo Switch: I don't remember how big the SD card is, but it's too damn tiny anyways.
I have to say, despite having a bunch of space, I do spend time deleting and redownloading games. Meanwhile, my Xbox 360 has a 1 TB USB2 HDD, and... uh, it comfortably fits all of the digital purchases I ever made.
Funny thing, the other 1 TB card for XSX is taken almost entirely by Microsoft Flight Simulator and Train Sim World 3. And also The Sims 4. All of these simulators eat a buuuunch of space.
2TB SSD. I hate running out of storage.
With all my games consoles I have 8TB combined. On my desktop I have 16TB.
It might seem like a lot but I manually back up my console games in case the disc gets damaged or the disc drive fails.
I have:
All the spinning rust has been banished to the NAS, Minecraft server, friend's sister's PC etc. The NAS now holds two 16 TB drives (SEAGATE Exos X16) in a raid 1, of that volume 5 TB are still free.
My desktop has roughly 350gb of a terabyte left after only a couple years. Definitely gonna have to delete a bunch of files in order to clear up space. That, and actually complete some of the games I started so I can uninstall them to save space.
Hell, I might even have to uninstall Portal 2 since it's the biggest offender of all the games on my PC, if I recall correctly.
Edit:
Just looked it up and Portal 2 is only taking up 12.94 gb where as Cities: Skylines is taking up 16.87 gb but that's not the end of it. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is taking up a massive 21.77 gb and Steam itself blows all of that out of the water, taking up 71.12 gb on my computer and is the largest program on it as well. Closet other non-game program on my computer takes up 70 gb less at 1.06 gb which is insane to me!
My PC has 4TB of NVME storage(2 drives), and then 8TB of HDD space(another 2 drives).
Games, and actual used stuff all live on the NVMEs, with things like Pictures and Videos stored on the HDDs. Plenty of space to never have to really think about what to keep installed.
I also have a 512GB Steam Deck, which also has a 256GB SD Card in it. My Switch also has a 256GB SD card in it as well.
Thats such a clean ocd setup. Where did you install your OS/ other programs if i may ask?
I really shouldn’t complain if i read some of these comments but between 10 drives of varying origins (some unknown) sizes and brands, i am quite jealous.
So quick break down is:
OS and programs on NVME 1, this also includes gamepass games. NVME 2 is Steam games and other launchers that might be installed.
HDD1 is downloads, pictures, music and documents, HDD2 is Videos.
my PC has less than 2TB spread accross multiple drives, SSDs and HDDs as well. I'm running a Pi as a server, with 1TB SSD in it. Also have a 4TB backup disk, which is currently installed in my main PC, but don't really use it as an "active" storage.
but I just had a flashback to around 2000, when the whole family went to a PC shop to buy our first machine. It had a whopping 20GB HDD in it! we all was like "oh lord, this disk is HUGE! it's impossible to fill up!"
needless to say, it wasn't. sometime later my next machine had 80 gigs and I almost got dizzy on the thought how freaking much is that. spoiler alert: it wasn't that big afterall 😅
As soon as I got a good deal on a 1TB SSD I bought one for my PS5!
Unfortunately, despite the promise, that games will get much smaller due to sony’s special compression technique - most of them didn’t really.
So I guess the correct answer is never enough haha.
I think the faster your connection, the less you can get away with for drive space. At one point, I was living in a place where the absolute fastest available internet was 1.5 meg dsl and where my actual connection speed hovered around dialup levels. I had massive amounts of local storage because I didn’t want to download anything more than once, and nothing was more soul crushing than getting a game on dvd so I didn’t have to worry about downloading it, and then still have to wait while it downloaded gigs worth of patches. Buying a game meant days of downloading, which I’d have to let run while at work because literally nothing else could be happening while a download was occurring. I now have gigabit ethernet.
I moved completely over to a steam deck for pc gaming. I rarely even think about how long a game takes to download, even in the case of a game like BG3 (which is great, btw - it’s a shockingly legit successor to the BG franchise and this is going to be one of those games that people remember for a decade or more).
In any case, I bought a deck with 512G a few months ago, and grabbed a 1tb card for it. I haven’t downloaded my entire library onto it, much less any non-steam games, but I find that the ability to go from thinking about playing a game to playing it in about the time it takes to get and eat a sandwich vastly changes the equation. Non-AAA games download in minutes.
Anyway, upgrading your internet speed may not be something available to everyone, because many places still have crap infrastructure, and some ISPs still have data caps. Mine thankfully doesn’t because I ended up moving so much data downloading to my new deck on top of 4k video streaming that I would be blowing through it monthly.
If you can’t upgrade your speed, upgrade your storage. You can use cheaper external drives with physical platters and either store games on there that don’t throttle on low rate io, or at least store the install files for games that you can then move over to your ssd. Back in the day when a 40mb hdd was considered large, we used to write scripts that would compress and uncompress games on the fly. I think wing commander with the voice pack by itself took up most of my drive.
tl;dr Think about investing in one or a few tb of external storage.
I have a 500gb m.2 for my system drive and a 1.5TB NVME SATA drive.
I also have about 6TBs of storage across a few old HDDs that are not currently in a computer, but boxed up in my closet.
I'm not really playing a ton of games at once. I usually have at most, maybe 10 installed at any given time, and even then I usually bounce between 2 or 3 regularly while the others are ignored.
My Xbox 360 has a 5TB internal harddrive. My gaming PC has a 1TB SSD.
Priorities.
I had the same issue with NVMe, but you can get 4x PCI-E cards to install them on. Wouldn't work as a boot drive but it's great for a games installation space. Just check installing another card doesn't drop your GFX from the 16x. My old ASUS Gene V had two 16x style slots and an extra 4x so I could manage to add one card without dropping the GFX to 8x.
2x2TB NVMe 2x4TB SSD
Steam Deck with 3 TB. 1 TB SD card, and 2 TB NVME.
On my regular desktop PC? 1.5TB spread between three drives, not using half of it. My NAS has 4TB and I'm using about 80% of it so will need to upgrade that at some point. For a supposed IT professional I really don't use that much storage.
Probably another 2TB or so spread among the various servers and Raspberry Pis I have kicking around the place, but none of them are used for anything important.
21 TB overall.
I run a Linux gaming desktop. I have 4 TB of SSD storage and 16 TB of mechanical storage. Boot drive is another 1 TB SSD, so 21 TB in total.
I have an "everything in one" build that I also run my Plex server off of. Including the external hard drives I think I've got around 80tb, around 60tb is actually used. But that's the result of years of building, I'd recommend looking for a cheap 8tb external hard drive for games storage
500gb nvme boot, 1tb SATA ssd for frequently played games, and a 3tb hard drive for everything else. It's good enough but I still have to clean it out more than I would like. If you haven't checked the price of storage recently you should, good 1tb SATA SSDs are under $50 USD now.
Wow people tell me I have a ton of storage but Im small potatoes comparted to many on here.
2TB SSD - Main Drive, 2TB SSD - Games, 2TB SSD - Other OS, 6TB HDD - Documents and crap, 6TB HDD - Movies TV and smaller games, 2TB ext HD - Backup, 2TB ext HD - Vault,
Total 22TB
Im planning to upgrade the internal Games SSD to 4TB. Im running Linux so the 2TB for my OS is kinda overkill.
128GB OS drive with a couple small games on it.
1TB M.2 SSD for most games, especially anything multiplayer.
2TB HDD for older single player games that aren't taxed by load times and bulk storage for videos/photos.
I have a 500GB Windows boot drive SSD (NVMe), 1TB storage SSD (SATA), and a 500GB SATA m.2 Linux Mint boot drive.
I also have a ~25TB file/media server that's only using around 1-2TB.
5 TB in total. Let's break it down.
The only one I'm getting close to filling it the 1 TB SSD, but I'm always happy to look into upgrading.
1.5Tb. I game on a Legion 5 laptop, and it came with 500gb for the OS. Then I slapped in a 1Tb ssd in the other slot. I don't play more than a couple games at a time, so that's way more than enough for me.
My main desktop has 1TB of storage (NVMe, fast) but I have a whole separate home server that has one 500GB boot drive and three 6TB hard drives running in a ZFS pool. (ZFS is analogous to RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks. basically one drive can die and I won't lose any data as long as I replace the drive before a second one dies.) This 21TB storage bucket holds anything and everything that doesn't need to be on my primary computer. It holds all my documents, photos, music, movies, TV shows, backups, and all of my disc images and ROMs for emulation. The only things I keep on my primary PC are games I am currently playing or will play soon and programs that need to be installed or run locally. Everything else is loaded over the network as-needed. For most stuff, I can just point my applications at the network share by mounting it to a drive letter in Windows.
2 4TB SSDs for most games
2 2TB M2 SSDs for my beefier games that I play the most
1 1TB HDD for random shit like documents and photos
1 16TB HDD as a backup drive for all the others.
I have an external hard drive, so I have just under double what you have.
Switch has 64+256 gb
Pc has 5 tb ssd + 12tb hdd and looking to an eventual NAS down the line
PS4 has 1tb
Current laptop has 256gb ssd + 1tb hdd, thr laptop that will replace it (Framework 16) i have planned for 6 tb ssd
1TB (nvme or ssd) on all my notebooks
2TB (nvme) on my desktop
150TB (hdd) on my server
Probably 6-7 TB between all my portable drivers, my OS hard drive, and my M.2 drive. Add on at least another 2-3TB between my Switch, 3DS, Vita, and PS3
I have 512 GB SSD for the system and gaming, and 2 TB HDD storage to keep files of my multimedia needs.
My main desktop has a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD (boot drive), a 1TB PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD (I use this for recordings / nonessential). It also has two 8TB HDDs in software RAID1, running Macrium Reflect for daily backups of the boot drive, as well as file versioning. My laptop, a generic Thinkpad E14 G1 I got off eBay for a couple hundred, has a 1TB PCle 3.0 NVMe drive (not sure why, I'm constantly wiping that thing it's my OS playground). Then I have a 4 drive NAS with 4x10TB and around 26TB usable in RAID5, all my Linux ISOs are there.
I have a laptop with 450GB SSD and 950GB HDD.
3.25TB (2TB+1TB HDD with 256GB NVMe) locally with another 2TB mounted over the network and used as a media server. Games take up a relatively small amount of space in my setup as I try to keep them all on one 1TB drive (and it's note even full) and I'm not playing much AAA games.
Most of my stuff in multimedia (photos, videos, uncompressed audio recordings) and backups (I had to upgrade it's drive recently as I went over the 500GB and I didn't want to store data over multiple drives)
A few years ago I bought an 8TB hdd for storage to replace 3 1 or 2TB drives I had in there and get everything in one place (as well as clearing some airflow space in the pc).
Also a 500GB SSD for OS and games. But that's feeling a bit tight nowadays so I may upgrade
My Linux part has 500GB space for System and Documents and 2.5GB only for Gaming (1 NVME, 2 SSDs and 1 HDD). Additionally 250GB Space for Windows with VR only stuff on it and 1TB space for VR Games (1 SSD and 1 HDD).
On my PC I have 8TBs split across various SSDs (both NVMe and SATA). All of them have games folders. My Switch has 64GB of internal storage and a 512GB microSD card, though I do have a 1TB card ready to go. Just haven't taken the afternoon to pop it in and redownload my games yet. My PS4 is sitting stock with it's 500GB internal drive. My Wii U has a 2TB external HDD hooked up to it (I was very optimistic about its potential library).
The PC has over 2TB of just games on it. To be frank, it could very easily have a full TB more. But I don't feel like hunting down all the various launchers' folders at the moment. Honestly this is largely data hoarding. I only play a few of the games regularly. I keep telling myself I'll get to dealing with my backlog eventually, but I never seem to find the time for it. The Switch is nearly full, I could fit maybe two more retail games on it. Mercifully Switch games are still pretty small as a rule, I have a library of about 80 games installed on it. Once again this is a case of data hoarding. The majority of the games are ones I have either beaten or played my fill of. I just keep them installed for no particular reason. The PS4 stores more dust than games nowadays, but if I recall I had five games downloaded and they used up somewhere between 300 and 400GB. I've honestly considered selling the thing, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy it given its condition. The Wii U, as you might imagine, has vast quantities of space available. Still, I somehow managed to use up a bit over 100GB on the external drive. The largest game I have installed on it is Breath of the Wild at 19GB.
A 500GB SSD and a 1TB HDD.
My PC has a 1TB SSD and my Steam Deck 512(?)GB
Almost the entirety of the storage on my pc is code or games, everything else is on my NAS
2tb games drive, 1tb boot drive with about 50% filled up with games
2x 500GB NVMe SSDs, 1x 500GB SSD and 1x 1TB SSD and an external 1TB SSD, retired mechanical HDDs two years ago and planning to upgrade to only m.2 drives in the next rig.
I'm not sure, not at my PC right now. But if I'm correct, then I have 1TB NVME + 512GB NVME + 2TB HDD + 512GB SSD. As well as 8TB on my NAS. Plan to buy two more NVME drives for PC likely 2+TB each and then upgrade my NAS to 40 TB. And then replace my old small NVMEs with larger ones as well at some point.
My main os/game drive is 1tb.
I have 3tbs of mechanical storage for shit that doesnt require performance.
I wish I had about 45tb.. but I also wish I had the dedication and patience to properly catagorize things.. and unfortunately I dont have either. so my current storage is just random folders with random shit dumped in them that i felt i needed at the time, most of which I've never gone back to delete.
If you really want to know here's the rundown
Galaxy Note 20 Ultra - 256gbs + 128gb micro SD
ThinkPad P43s - 512gbs + 128gb micro SD
PS4 - 500gbs
PS3 - 320gbs
Xbox Series S - 512gbs + 1tb external HDD
None of them except for the PS3 have enough space. Especially my laptop and the series s. I only have one game saved to my PS3 so it doesn't need any more space but everything else could benefit from doubling or even tripling the storage space. Files are getting pretty big these days. Especially games. Black Ops 3 came out a long time ago and it's over 100gbs.
PC.
2TiB NVME, 1GiB EFI boot, the rest split between NTFS for Windows and ZFS for NixOS.
Second 2TiB NVME.
8TB HDD for bulk storage
24TB NAS (4x 8TB HDDs in a RAID-5) for storing raw photo backups.
I have 250gb, but I am a simple man. I uninstall the games I don't play and I dont downloading game more that 50gb because its just stupid.
For my gaming PC:
OS Drive - 250GB - SATA SSD
Storage drive - 1TB - NVMe SSD
The OS drive was upgraded before I had a Motherboard with NVMe. It's hung around because it gets the job done.
I regularly rotate what games are installed. I'll usually only have 2-3 major games installed at a time. If space starts getting to be low again, I'll re-evaluate and remove stuff. It helps that I tend to focus on one game at a time.
I'm sure I have them somewhere. The system is performant enough that I haven't bothered to try and run them down.
256GB SSD. Thinking about upgrading sometime next year.
6TB SSD, ~90TB HDD (actually ~120, but the rest is parity).
Photo editing storage gets intense when modern cameras are taking lossless RAW images at 20fps. Video editing storage is honestly just insane to begin with.
Games are a few hundred GB on the SSDs
I have a total of 9.5TB in my computer, another 17TB on a NAS and a backup drive that is another 6TB.
I'm a digital packrat and ensure things that are hard to reacquire are at least copied on a second drive.
2TB NVME 3.0 DRAM drive for my OS and games. + an extra 2TB NVME DRAMless 4.0 just games drive.
The partner’s PC is a 512GB SATA DRAMless SSD boot drive. + 1TB SATA DRAMless SSD games storage + 1TB HDD extra games drive for less frequently used games.
The only noticeable difference is between the HDD and any of the SSDs. I’m not entirely sure if you blind-tested me on loading games between that 512 and either of my NVME drives I’d be able to tell the difference. Although I haven’t tried any of those recent directstorage games.
1 TB NVME and 1 TB SSD SATA.
Might add another 2 TB SSD SATA in the future.
This is the fun way! Who wants only one drive?
I have (2) 2TB NVME SSDs, one for operating system/core apps and one for games. I have a 2TB HDD to run my plex server off of.
I wish I had another slot for NVME
I haven't run in to any space issues yet since I tend to uninstall games once I'm done playing them. My PC has a 256GB SSD for OS/Win10 and 1TB SSD for Steam. Street Fighter 6 and Bioshock RM are the only Steam games I have installed. I forget how much storage my laptop has, but it has Among Us and Bioshock RM installed. My PS4 has a 540GB SSD and it stores Black Ops 3, Garden Warfare 2, Tetris Effect and a couple other party games.
1TB SSD computer, 47TB HDD NAS
For me, I have 2.5 TB, split across 3 drives:
I tend to play a lot of games at once, so I need a bit more storage. I estimate that you can probably get away with 1 TB of storage, but 500 GB, nowadays, really isn't enough.
3 TB. The 1TB nvme ssd my HP Omen 17-ck1000 came with, not sure which brand/model it is. And the 2tb Samsung 990 pro nvme ssd I put in it. Considering the fact most AAA games are now ~100+ GB each, I can only have like 30 games installed at a time, assuming I delete the OS and all of my files. And I use my laptop for more than gaming, so I can probably only have like 14 games max. Thankfully most games have some sort of cloud saves, so I can uninstall the games that I haven't played in a while do make room. And I also dont acually play AAA games that much. For example the recent game I have been playing, Disfigure, is only is less than a GB.
SSD 250go : OS HDD 2To : Storage SSD NVMe 1To : Games (will probably upgrade to 2/3To)
I just recently upgraded from an old Samsung 850 EVO 250gb SATA drive to a Crucial P3 1tb m.2 drive for OS and playing games (I have a NAS for any media and file storage)
Lots of m.2 drives are cheap right now
14TB on my PC, mix of NVME, SATA and an old Spinny Boy HDD. I have 1.5TB on my Xbox One X and 2.5TB on my PS4, but I never really touch them for more than a Plex player and PSVR on the PS4 anymore.
Also 22TB in my NAS that I have a partition for Steam game backups for faster downloads to my PC.
If it's a pre-built there probably isn't one that existed that's good enough to run BG3 that only would have come with just a 500GB and if it's a self built one I feel like almost no one would have built something recent enough to run bg3 and still would have just installed a single 500GB drive. 500GB was on the low end of custom builds a decade ago.
You know that you don't have to replace every single component in your PC every time you upgrade something, right?
And no, 500 GB (SSD) was the low end fairly recently. Heck, it's still fair enough nowadays, I have a half-empty 1 TB drive and could easily bring that down to 350-400 GB.
Yes, but I know that if you had to upgrade your vid card in the past 5 years you probably had to also upgrade at least your psu and if you went beyond that then yes, upgrade pretty much everything.
Lol. If it was a cheap pre-built it could probably stand to have the thermal paste on the gpu and processor redone. Thermal grizzly paste is really good stuff, but it's also like $25. There's plenty that are almost as good for half the money. Then also blow out all the fins with canned air. If your rig came with a short 2060 instead of a long one you're pretty much destined to hear that fan no matter what, though. Can't be louder than my kids PS4 right now.
thanks for using Leebra!

I run a gaming laptop. My OS drive is a 500gb NVMe. My gaming drive is a 1tb NVMe. And then I have a 5tb storage drive... for downloads.
