What's a song you like with a killer beat?
a year ago by toomanypancakes to c/asklemmy
I'm looking for suggestions for my drum jam-along playlist, so any song you love that has a good beat I'm open to. Whatcha got?
Edit: for clarification my plan is to add all these to a playlist and tomorrow my practice session is gonna just be jamming to that playlist. Load me up!
You have good taste
Thanks, your suggestion was also choice!
The Real Me” by The Who
Sorry if these are cliche.
For a metal waltz, try Cheval by Igorrr
For jazzy pop with an upfront floor tom, try Humanised by Sola Rosa
For messy disjointed verses and flowing choruses, try Giant by Bear Hands
For a shuffle-y groove with some slightly unusual snare patterns, try Home Away From Home by Cut Chemist - nothing too wild here, but it sounds like it’d be fun to play
For setting up random stuff like dustbin lids as percussion, try Sick Kids by Fjorka
For being kept on your toes by something with several distinct sections, including an unusual shuffle, tru Walking Headz by STUFF. The full stop is part of the band name
For rhythmic patterns not common in Western music, try Gnawa Beat by Bab L’ Bluz
For noisy punk with lots of fills, try Bakuro Book by Otoboke Beaver
For laid-back funk with some unusual percussion, try 3 On E by Vulfpeck
For if you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if bossa nova and drum & bass had a baby, try Drum ‘N’ Bossa by Carbuncle
For fun swing-y jazz try Forgotten Places by Alif Tree
And, just for funsies, why not pit yourself against the most sampled song in history? Amen Brother by The Winstons - you know the drum sample (1.26, for anybody who wants to skip to it to see if they’ve heard it - spoiler: you have), but the tune itself is also a banger with a fun drum part
The Amen Break is like the Wilhelm Scream of music.
The Futurama theme song is another surprisingly good use of it. It's kind of like if Fat Boy Slim had written Amen Brother.
Here's what I came up with out of my song sifting. I was going to place them in order as to how hard they might be to play... then I realized that wouldn't matter, as it's different for everyone. Ha. Enjoy.
Avenged Sevenfold - Bat Country
Bring Me The Horizon - The House of Wolves
Victorious is a trans woman anthem honestly. Listened to it a lot early in my transition.
Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to say it was exclusively. It's just really powerful for all women ☺️
If you're looking for going to the gym/getting stuff done:
Diplo - Big Lost
Aesop Rock - Getaway Car
MF DOOM/Dangermouse - Crosshairs
Ratatat - Nostrand
DJ Shadow - Blood on the Motorway
Squarepusher - Central Line
I fuckin love aesop, got two of his albums on vinyl (impossible kid and spirit world field guide). Defs added to the list
Dangerdoom's Crosshairs is an excellent choice. Also nice to see another Squarepusher fan.
Hit It and Quit It by Funkadelic
LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk is Playing At My House
The Walkmen - We’ve Been Had
I wish I played the drums so I could play along with these. Enjoy!
She’s Hearing Voices - Bloc Party
I have a few pieces from the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure soundtrack that I think could be great to drum along to:
Stand Proud: https://youtu.be/oAzNQKbncxA
End of the World: https://youtu.be/xP6iYISIocw
Josuke's Theme: https://youtu.be/pqDqIMUo2OU
Tagging this post for one's that don't show up on tidal
James Brown - Popcorn
James Brown - Popcorn
Microphone Fiend by Eric B. & Rakim
Lemon Demon - My Trains [Youtube]
(I don't know much about drums but this song just sounds really good)
"Driving with the top down" Tony Stark's first flight with the Mark 2. I found a metal cover on Youtube.
Achilles' Last Dtand by Led Zeppelin gets my vote.
Not a particularly cool band these days, and not well-known outside the UK, but Madness have a great rhythm section.
Or maybe “had”… their newer stuff is pretty unbearable to me…
But songs like Our House and Wings Of A Dove would be great to play along to on drums. If you happen to like the music, which you might not!
if just one obscure one, that doesn't deserve to be this obscure: KCLR-future funk chant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Sk75tWiEo8
Fishman is the man
it's where I got my username
keep this benzine ring around your finger, and think of me when everything you wanted starts to end
Cantiga 166 if you're into medieval music.

Basically anything by Run the Jewels.
I'm a sucker for simple deep beats so Run to Me by Clarence Coffee Jr
Panic Station by Muse.
The groove is a banger and the structure gives a lot of room for improvisation
Club Soda (Bangalter from Daft Punk):
Hows about Feuerhake - Tic Tac
Refused - "The Deadly Rhythm" https://youtu.be/bJJlo_6YMIc
I like Phat Planet by Leftfield
Have fun! Meshuggah - Clockworks
Most def.
Sounds like a melody by A life divided
Idk, I've been listening to reggae, ska, ska punk
