On one hand yeah they're stupid annoying

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure for like Mormons and JWs where they're sending over like kids barely out of highschool for missionary work in another country that's the entire point. They're not there to convert anyone, they're there to instil a sense of fear into these kids by showing them that everyone who isn't apart of their church hates them even though they're only trying to 'help'. Being rude to them just proves their church's point.

Or: actually the fastest way to get put on their blacklist is to be really genuinely nice (but still firm) to the missionaries because you're proving them wrong about how mean and horrible the outside world is

I've heard that before but really wonder if it's true. My last encounter with (I believe Mormons though it's been a LOT of years ago) was while we were eating dinner. The front door was open with the glass storm door closed. They came to the door, knocked, then stared at us while we were eating dinner as a family. We stared back and they proceeded to knock another 3 times before leaving. I mean, regardless of what you are at the door for that's just rude as fuck so how would they expect a nice response?!

knock 3 times

oh boy, the knock 3 times rule, that brings back some memories. I spent a miserable 6 months as a Mormon missionary and my first companion would always knock 3 times. I always felt it was rude, especially when he would do it at a house where we knew someone was home and just not answering the door.

I remember in a tech shop someone ranting after being asked for their email address when paying. Kept a few of us in the queue waiting and what did he win from it?? Did he really feel good after shouting at shop staff?

Can't see any win from being rude to anyone. Just live and let live man.

It’s not on other customers if a shop has you waiting. It’s on the shop for making it needlessly complex. It’s like blaming someone who is reading out their coupon numbers: they are the user. Not the dev team. Take your complaint to the right people who can make the difference to the business model. Long queues isn’t the customer’s fault. It’s on how that business is managed. you could hold your breath if you ever think your happiness is a prerogative by another customer’s responsibility.

And while I agree about the energy thing with scammers, I do not agree with calling it a waste of time if someone else is going to stand up to it.

Scammers take advantage of the vulnerable elderly. So good on the ones who slow them down. No need to minimize their effort by calling it a waste of time. Like you said : live and let live.

Most women in tech are not very good

Citation needed.

Anyway you don't have to be very good to be better than 95% of the population, because most people can barely operate outlook.

I also resent the implication I have to be a super nerd to be good at IT. It's not actually that hard, you just have to bother to read the instructions.

Sure. It's always hard to know exactly what kind of skills we are even taking about here. IT is a huge area.

You don't have to be a super nerd to be good at IT but you do have to read instructions and learn things, which means you are actually interested in it. That's all it takes.

Most girls are not interested in those things so they become project managers or IT managers and other things that are more interesting to them. That's my experience at least.

I'm mad as hell. Pissed because of the sexism but mad because how fucking dare he say that programmers can't be good if they have an actual life? I've been very appreciated in all the jobs I've done and turns out that being able to give several solutions fast and being reliable is way more important than coding on your free time.

I'm just sorry that they can't actually be good at their job by investing their work hours into work/training/testing, it is what it is. Yeah there's people with disabilities that need to invest more than the usual programmer to be good at their job, but that's how it is and expecting everyone is the same is pathetic.

Oh, to have the confidence of an average man.

I had the chance to bring on some summer help. Two kids from the local career center. A guy and a girl. Halfway through the summer, I let the guy go because he had no self-start, desire to learn, or eagerness for projects. The girl is great with people, an information sponge, and seeks out new challenges.

And because of attitudes like yours, she'll have to work twice as hard to appear half as competent as the lazy ass I let go, once she gets out in the soul-crushing tech industry.

So, in summation, eat rocks.

Solicitation at my door.

  1. I have a sign, on my door, that says "no solicitors."
  2. By law, all solicitors must have a solicitation license from the county on their person. It's a photo ID issued by the county. None of them do.
  3. I work from home with a handicapped wife. Do not bother me.

I give them one chance to go away. If they press it, I demand to see their license, which "Oh it's in the truck" or "it's in the office" or "I am not soliciting, I am giving you a FREE ESTIMATE..." I call the cops. Fuck em. Non-emergency number, I state a description of a suspicious man who refused to show me a solicitation license, and kept asking me to open my door. I describe the direction they are going with dates, streets, and times.

A few get nabbed. Some of these guys are known to the police because they are possibly casing your house and they have a ton of camera evidence of them peeping in windows and gates.

Non-American here.

I have lived in three different countries and solicitors are extremely rare. And in the few cases one ringed my door it was for charity or school kids collecting donations for some summer trip (not sure if this is called soliciting or not).

Is that bad in America that you need to put a sign at your door? How frequent they visit?

Depends massively on where you are. Out in a really rural area, you'll probably get one a year tops. Middle class suburbia, but not a gated community? Probably substantially more, like 1+ a week.

I'm in the suburbs but up a couple of hills so I generally get fewer than 1 a month (that I know of. I have my doorbell disconnected and live with others so it's possible I get more and just don't know about it)

I think it depends on where you live. In my case, I see about 4-5 a week on my security cameras, but only a few a year ignore the sign. On nextdoor dot com, it's discussed and video camera footage is shared, so we know which neighborhoods are targeted. Mine is because of the aging population of upper middle income folks.

Those people are genuinely brain washed into believing they are going save your life if they convert you.

The apostate thing won't always work. It requires a couple of steps. The terminology you want to use is to say "I'm DF'd" or "I'm disfellowshipped". That means they are not actually allowed to talk to you. They won't even say okay, they just leave. Works 100% of the time IME.

Source: I'm disfellowshipped.

I can't in good conscience tell a groomed/brainwashed child to eat my entire ass and I can't even really be rude to the women standing behind them because they'll just be like, "see how rude and awful nonbelievers are?"

One of my prouder moments when I was younger and thinner, was answering the door for some JW's, while naked and handcuffed to my girlfriend.

They were working their way through our apartment complex, so we came up with a stupid plan.

I used to answer the door naked when I lived in a town where that was not a crime. Some of them try to lock eyes and pretend it's not happening, some just run. Either way, I was amused.

You have to trespass well onto private property to get to my house now and it's just to far a walk so I don't get any JWs anymore.

I used to make sport of proselytizers, seeing how long I could string them along, but these days if someone hops my 12 foot fuck-off privacy fence and walks the 100 yards down my driveway past the no trespassing signs I will likely have already called the cops by the time they reach my door. So they would be met with hostility.

No, it's fair enough. I usually try to give them some kind of reassurance that I don't hate them, I hate their bosses. The whole telemarketer / debt collector thing is one of the top reasons why I wouldn't want to move away from the Pixel series of phones. The Call Screen feature just automatically declines their calls for me.

Funnily enough, if you bring up the screen while its active, there's an option something along the lines of "Do not call back" (or maybe its the Report as Spam button) that gives them a very aggressive but "nice" way of telling them to kick rocks, and to remove my number from their list.

Call Screen is legitimately my favorite thing about my pixel, having switched from an Edge about a year ago.

My only wish is that I could change the script on it. At one point I thought it'd be hilarious to just pipe it to chatGPT and let them talk to each other.

Anamnesis 2 points 3 years ago

By automatically declines, you mean you have the assistant answer, then you select your response from that screen, right? It annoys me that I even have to screen the call at all, but I guess it's better than what you get on most phones.

path: 0 2936538 2955987, hotness: undefined, score: 2, children: 1
russjr08 1 point 3 years ago

No, it will do so automatically - could just be the setting configuration I have, but I don't have to actually bring it up. Even if I'm using my phone when the call comes in, I'll get a notification that says "Screening unknown call" and it'll decline on its own. If I click the notification it brings up the active call screen dialog and I can watch it in real time / select the options myself if I want to.

I'm not sure why yours isn't doing so automatically, perhaps double check your settings in the phone app? I can't remember if I had to explicitly flip the "automatic" setting in there originally.

While I don’t deny that an uncomfortable proportion of people who are Christian are racist, sexist, homo/transphobic, xenophobic, etc, but to clump everyone into that category is straight up religion based discrimination.

I think you are frustrated by Christians who are bad people, not Christians in general. I know a lot of Christians, some who are terrible, and some who are genuinely good people. I also could say the same about the atheist people I know, the Jewish people I know or the Muslim people I know.

I think the problem is discrimination, which is common among (and contradictory to) Christianity.

Christianity teaches intolerance of homosexuals and trans people. Full stop. Fuck them and anyone who still wants to be labeled as such. If you do not agree with those teachings then it’s time to find a new label to set yourself apart from them. To me it is akin to saying I’m a Nazi but I’m not racist.

I am not frustrated by bad people who identify as Christians I am disgusted by what Christianity has become. The funny thing is that if they actually followed the teachings of Christ we would be having a different conversation.

I dunno about that. I think almost all of big box churches and even medium sized churches teach that. I would guess that over 90% of Christians believe that nonsense. But I would argue that they are not actually practicing the teachings of Jesus. Jesus loved everybody — sex workers, diseased people, etc. if Jesus were alive today I wholeheartedly believe he would be among trans folks and accepting them for who they are. Ultimately LGBTQ+ folks are fighting for the right to love which is also what Jesus fought for.

The Bible does not tell a story of Jesus rejecting homosexual people or transgender people, and in fact tells a story of someone who would love everyone, including the ones most Christians hate. Full stop.

Church + religion != Christianity.

For what it’s worth I am a staunch atheist.

It's so insidious because he probably got all the info from my grandfather's obituary. He just needed our names and town and then could look up the phone numbers on those "people search" sites or phone books. The house hadn't even been put on sale yet, and we were not the executors. What kind of sicko reads the obits so they can buy a house? And doesn't even bother to go through a realtor or attend an open house when the time comes. The gall of some people is unbelievable. I'm not really rude by default to anyone. If I'm in a bad mood I guess I can sometimes get rude when irritated. But I feel like all humans deserve some base level of respect and courtesy.

If it's someone horrible like a serial killer or child rapist or something I wouldn't even be rude, just not interact at all with them.

But generally speaking, people are all humans. Scam callers are third worlders from poor countries. If I lived in Nigeria making less than $800 a month in salary, I wouldn't feel bad about scamming rich westerners. We live in prosperity and luxury whereas they get the shit end of the stick. I don't blame them.

Debt collectors are just doing their job. They have a family to feed, have hopes and dreams, probably hate their job, etc.

I don't like Trumpers generally but I try to be polite and friendly. I like planting seeds of doubt into their mind. Criticize Republicans in ways they can understand.

"Man Trump is such a shithead, he doesn't believe in free market capitalism"

They hear the phrase "free market capitalism" and know it's something they're supposed to support, so they ask for clarification

"Well he put taxes on imports on foreign goods so now steel is more expensive for regular Americans. It's anti-free market"

They sometimes just shrug and look a bit concerned. Republicans have a lot of little inconsistencies. "Fiscal conservatives" but they balloon the national debt everytime. "Freedom and liberty" but they try banning books, drag shows, abortions, trans surgeries, etc. Reagan is an idol but he supported getting rid of guns, gave amnesty to illegals, his economic advisor Friedman supported open borders, etc.

It's really not that hard to throw a little cognitive dissonance their way. It only works if they see you as a friend though. If they think of you as an enemy or threat, they will immediately get defensive and you'll probably just make them more set in their beliefs.

Linguistic elitists—for example, people who shout that "the Blacks don't speak good English" or who get pissed off that "I could care less" is an idiom that exists.

I was a linguistics major in college and, sorry not sorry, language is malleable and it changes over time. You can't stop it. Look the French—the Académié Française can try to legislate the language all they want, but nobody says la coussin de sécurité, they just say l'airbag.
