I played AoE2 DE yesterday. They don't make games like that anymore.
I played AoE2 DE yesterday. They don't make games like that anymore.
I'll translate quickly: "I don't know new games."
You're a Dachs from the woods, stinky and subterranean (I'm not serious about that).
They do! Check out https://play0ad.com/ if you haven't. A free, open source variant that's pretty complete.
And fun. It is actually quite fun. The graphics are really nice, right in that midrange of not too low quality to be ugly but not too pretty to cook your machine.
It's either this or counter strike. Although now I'm thinking about it I miss the old StarCraft with the multiplayer custom maps. Defense games were awesome. There were some other cool ones too. I wonder if anyone still plays those?
Probably Minecraft. Can't say how many hours, as it doesn't get tracked but I started playing in 2009, when it was still a free browser-based game. Had a server with all my friends on it and played it pretty much daily for a few years.
Sleeping eight hours a day? This lacks commitment!
Just kidding, it’s World of Warcraft for me too, playing on and off since release. Retail has jumped the shark for me and currently enjoying Turtle WoW as much as 2004.
Dwarf Fortress
Closing in on 4000 hours in Rocket League over the past 10 years. It can be terribly frustrating at times because bad actors have been undermining the matchmaking system for years. Still there is nothing that compares to the flow and possibility for skill expression in Rocket League, so I always come back to it.
I've played 3300 hours over 12-13 years. It's a free capture the flag web game that is typically 4v4 and around 4-10 minutes per match (6 min with a slaughter rule of 3 caps and an OT for ties).
There are 3 types of power ups: tag pro, juke juice, and rolling bomb. There are a few special tiles: boosts, bombs, spikes, gate switches, gravity well, and speed. There's a lot of maps that rotate every month by committee vote.
It's a good ratio of team tactics and individual skill that keeps bringing me back. The community is solid and they just slowly keep improving the experience. The community isn't huge so there's more popular regional times to have matches.
Maybe a Lemmy hug will get an infusion of new players :) Come check it out!
Ok, this is interesting because this question just came up with my wife.
I started playing the original Civilization game in college.
I shifted to freeciv when it became available.
If you consider them the same game, I've been playing that game about 34 years.
I have an ungodly amount of time logged in Civ V, and CIv VI is catching up. I don't want to even think about adding up all the Civ games as one thing lol
Minecraft, I played it in school and I still play occasionally
If we’re talking about longest span of time, not necessarily most total hours. Then it would be RuneScape. Started playing back when the wild had no protections. Then after all the changes they made, and once OSRS came out, I went to that instead. Just got my 20-year cape on rs3
I have played over a 1000 hours of cyberpunk 2077 during the 5 years it's been out. It's the game I always return to, oddly feels like home, like comfort. Very dystopian yes, but such an immersive world to drive around in and complete all the things you can in the game.
Edit: typo
Minecraft, started in 2018, i don't play the same world though
Total hours it is probably World of Warcraft, but I have not played it at all significantly since 2017ish.
I did play it again in 2022, but the game didn’t make a lot of sense and they purged a lot of unused accounts and I couldn’t remember what server I played on etc, so I lost all my toons.
For length of time it is Warcraft III.
It's either Runescape or GTA SA (sa-mp multiplayer)
Gotta try ZyEl, such a good mod, cranks everything up to 11
Probably Minecraft. Since the old launchers never recorded hours, I would estimate somewhere over 1,500 hours. I've been playing it since the very early release versions like 1.2.
Second would be Stardew Valley at ~594 hours on Steam. Including time I spent on a console (I don't know the exact amount), somewhere around 700 hours. I discovered this game around 2017 while shopping at a local retail store and picked up an XBOX copy before I discovered it was on Steam. Definitely one of my best purchases of all time.
Been playing civilisation for a while now. Different versions as time goes on tho so not sure it counts.
In terms of absolute length in years? Minecraft. First played it in middle school when it was still in beta, a few months (or maybe a year?) before Nether even was a thing. Last played... maybe 1-2 years ago? If Luanti/Mineclone also counts then last month. Ironically I never liked Minecraft that much... only "gotten back" into it for like a week or two at a time
Second longest is probably Skyrim (honorary mention of The Binding of Issac, but rebirth is technically a new game so...), both of which I liked a lot. Played both quite a bit in high school, and still played a bit within the past year
My actual comfort game hasn't even been developed until 7 years ago
Hours-wise, probably the Pokémon series up until the Switch games. I know when DPP were the new games back in high school, I had over 2000hr on Pearl, but never checked the others. More recently, I passed 2000hr mark in Satisfactory (the devs are masterclass in community engagement).
I still occasionally open up Alley Cat which is much easier now that you can do it in a browser.
https://www.playdosgames.com/online/alley-cat/
That's from 1984 so fairly old, but it just feels amazing. Amazingly clunky, but amazing. I love the fish bowl so much, the mice are evil, and dating is hard for a cat.
I also regularly replay SNES games and recently finished The Legend of Zelda, a Link to the Past. So much fun, such a well balanced game.
For most played it would have to be various solitaire games, especially Fourty Thieves. I have played these so much my phone has burned in card shapes, but that's fine for me, worth it.
If I exclude cards it is Creeper World 3 which has at least 50 full days of play, but probably much more by now.
This is the first time I see Alley Cat mentioned in the wild. Now I want the music as a ringtone.
Solitaire... I've played it for over 40 years now. First learned how to play when I was vacationing on a clove plantation owned by Djarum on the island of Java.
Team Fortress 2, the damn game I can't seem to detach from. It's like the flu, every year I get the urge to play it. Then I play it very intensely for 3 weeks, then I don't touch it for a year. Rinse and repeat...
Been like 14 years or so
I was going to say Minecraft, but then I realized I still play The Sims 2 and that came out in 2004.
According to steamdb, my top three are:
I'm fairly certain the TF2 times are padded a bit - I'm not ashamed to say I did a bit of achievement_idle back in the day.
League, startet 2013 ~2014 and I still end up comming back to it from time to times.
Number of hours? Can't be certain because of ye olden times before steam. On steam though I've got a couple thousand hours in both Warframe and Factorio.
Oldest game that I'm still regularly playing? The Guardian Legend. Every six months or so I get the itch and start grinding runs with the illusion that I'll be a speedrunner someday.
That's such a weirdly specific band of activity. What brought you back and then made you leave again?
I played a shitload of TF2 back in the day, but every time I've tried to go back, I get smacked in the face by how good people are and how many blatant cheaters there are.
When I discovered emulation, I started playing some real old stuff again. I've got Atari games like Frogger. That's probably the oldest game I've played again most recently, but I don't play that regularly.
I intermittently fire up Micromachines 2 (Mega Drive), which is just as much fun as it has always been.
If we're taking about the oldest game I still play regularly and seriously (that I did start playing back in the day) and still play now, that would be some PSP and PS2 games. I'm currently playing Wipeout Pulse and Gran Turismo 4 and progressing (even got the same save files from the PSP). I also regularly play Tony Hawk's Underground, Lumines, Grand Theft Auto China Town Wars and Everybody's Golf..... But these have fallen out of the current game rotation.
Overall if we're going to crown an undisputible winner, I think that will be the original Tetris.
Edit: also reminds me of Sim City 3000 and X-wing Alliance, which I will remember and play again once a decade. I still mourn the loss of the playerbase of Quake 3 Arena and Quake Live, otherwise I would still happily play those now.
Check out Open Arena. It is based in the source for Q3A but it is fully fleshed out with new characters and weapons. Absolutely frenetic and great fun.
+1 for micro machines, though I prefer v3.
And older GTA, GTA2 was my favourite. I play it every so often and always enjoy it, but it is hard to play GTA 1 with modern expectations, they really improved for 2. "And remember, respect is everything"
I shall check out all those suggestions. Thanks. Already got GTA2 though.
The amazing price and performance of emulation consoles blows my mind and I would recommend them to anyone who hasn't discovered them yet.
For total hours it's either Garrysmod at around 2100 hours or Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion (not sure of the hours since it was before tracking hours was really a thing, but I know it'sa LOT), but as far as how long ago I started playing it'd be Diablo 2 since 2000
I've been playing the sims series since I was about the same age, sims 1 in... 2002? Though I haven't played it much. The fact that TS4 has been out for that long... Geez. So The Sims series as a whole. Would recommend at least giving S1 a shot if you haven't, it's fun in a charming kinda way. I've also played a lot of the sims games. All of the main PC ones, The Sims on ps1, The Urbz, Sims 2 on the PS2/GBA/PSP (all VERY different games to each other), sims Unleashed on the PSP, freeplay, the weird mobile app... Yeah. I'd also recommend checking out all of The Sims 2 console ports, because they're all weird as hell, and the stories in them are hilarious, and they're all very different to each other, so it's worth trying all of them if you end up liking one of them.
If we mean same game the whole time, RuneScape. I started in 2007, and have played on and off since, though I haven't been back since they cancelled pride last year, and don't plan to go back.
If we mean hours, either Mabinogi or Wurm Online. Mabi is a close second for how long I've played (started 2010), and I've probably got similar hour counts in Mabi as Wurm, I just can't confirm Mabi's playtime. I've got... 4500 hours ish in Wurm?
Probably rocket league, rim world, or from the depths.
Hours-wise EverQuest, counterstrike, wow, TF2, eso, overwatch are probably the top
Longevity-wise going back years later crpgs like pillars of eternity, planescape, jrpgs final fantasy, Chrono trigger, shooters like doom2, metroidvanias, and racing I still like to load up burnout sometimes
Doom has already been said, so my next pick is Freelancer. There hasn't been a space game I've liked as much since it came out. TIE Fighter and FreeSpace have more tactical combat, but Freelancer has it all: world building, factions/politics, trading, piracy, satisfying exploration, a nice variety of ships and loadouts, and a great story.
Elite: Dangerous, the space ship game with a life-size universe. 1200 hours so far in 6 years. No real story, no campaign, just you, random players, and a trillion planets to find. Or perhaps you'd rather blast pirates. Maybe scrounge around for some plant scans. Whatever you like, I hope you also like 30 minutes of travel time because "fast travel" on an interstellar scale is humanly slow. Plus, it's huge. All star systems are known, but few are visited. Visited divided by know, times total game existence predicts we'll have it all mapped in 45,000 years.
But at the end of the day, it's all about listening to lovely spaceship sounds. Graphics are nice. Sound is amazing.
I made my original RuneScape account during classic. That account alone has over a year and a half logged in, and is getting nearly 25 years old, as is RuneScape. It is one of a handful of accounts that I've maxed out since. I go back to it probably every two years and play for a good while then stop.
The long dark is probably the game I have the most time in that isn't an MMO, with well over 1k hours. There are other games that could probably compete but I don't have any way of tracking or knowing.
Knowing that a single game has been such a significant portion of my actual living existence is kind of amazing to me. If anything I'm definitely loyal to what I like, I guess. I'm also really excited with where they are aiming to take the game because I feel as though it gets a lot of unfair flak in the genre, especially compared to osrs.
I replay the original Command&Conquer every few years. I've been playing it since its release.
EA don't deserve much praise in general, but I like to give credit where it's due: The C&C remastered was very well done. 10/10.
Oh, and I play FTL from time to time. I bought it via humblebundle in 2012.
Mine is Hearthstone. Been playing it since it launched some 11 or 12 years ago, I think. The last year or two is probably the least I've played it, as I was starting to get bored, but I still pop in and play a few hands now and then.
my total hours in gta:sa since it came out must be somewhere around 10k hours. second place goes to gta v online which i only recently quit because they decided to block linux players, 5k hours.
The devs keep updating it with cool stuff. In the next update, there's gonna be an orb, which you can hold in place of a shield and which auto-flashbangs your enemies when you get hit.
There's also gonna be an orb which sets off explosions around you when you kill an enemy without attacking them...? Have not worked that one out yet, but it sounds rad as hell.
Gotta be New Vegas. 323 hours on Steam, and probably around twice as many on the PS3.
I'm not a gamer, but these two games are almost indispensable for me. Yes, there are Madness Returns and other Strongholds, but I've never really played them.
Likely WoW back in the vanilla/BC/WotLK days. The game say something like 2.5 months or so of game time so somewhere around 1,500hrs.
And although I hate to admit it, CoD was a big part of my teens. From CoD:MW to Black Ops I probably put in the same amount of time as WoW.
Easily Europa Universalis 4. It's a grand strategy game, which means it's an Excel Spreadsheet with better UI.
This game specifically since it was popular in my friend group, got both free and paid updates for more than a decade, and it is rather low energy so you can either focus on talking with friends or barely hold on to consciousness at 3 A.M. when you said you'd go to sleep just after annexing one. random. duchy. which takes way longer than it should.
I don't play anymore, but probably WoW. Other contenders are stellaris at 2600ish hours and 1300ish hours in Warframe.
thanks for using Leebra!
go to feed...
Age of Empires 2 in all its guises and it ain't even close. Been playing it on and off since the original version released in '99. Must be the high 4 digits number of hours at least.
