Framework announced the Framework 13 Pro with full Linux compatibility from the Start

4 months ago by cm0002 to c/linux

Der am besten reparierbare Pro-Laptop ist da. 20 Stunden Akku & Höchstleistung mit Intel Core Ultra Serie 3. CNC-Aluminium mit exzellenter Linux-Unterstützung. Sichern Sie sich jetzt Ihren!

Framework announced the Framework 13 Pro including full Linux support right from the beginning.

Some quick information about the Device:

  • will use Intel Core Ultra 300 (Panther-Lake)
  • updated Battery Design with (up to) 20h Battery life
  • custom designed Display Panel with Touch support (keeping the 3:2 aspect ratio)
  • LPCAMM2 for upgradable/replacable RAM without compromising on Speed/Low Power of LPDDR5X
  • milled Aluminium Unibody chassis
  • Full Linux support right from the start (including Firmware update via LVFS, Fingerprint Reader, etc.)
  • Haptic Touchpad
  • and all the repairability features Framework is known for

You can watch their YouTube Video for a quick summary:

I was looking for a new laptop to replace my old Lenovo Yoga 370 and initially disregarded the Framework 13 because of some downsides (low Battery Life, bad Camera, etc.) and was looking to go with one of the following devices:

  • HP Elitebook X g1a
  • the new Dell XPS 14
  • Asus Expertbook PM5 G2

or also a MacBook pro. I am using Linux since more then 10 years and never touched MacOS at all. So I was not sure if MacOS would work for me. But this announcement made it easy: It will be a Framework 13 Pro with Intel X7 358H!

artyom 39 points 4 months ago

tl;dr

  • CNC aluminum Chassis (matte black)
  • 74wh battery
  • wildly-efficient Panther Lake chips
  • Ubuntu available pre-installed
  • 20hr. battery life.

Another interesting bit from the presentation: Framework revenue is steadily-growing, in a market where many consumer OEMs may not exist much longer due to AI scams and razor thin profit margins. Maybe they can see the writing on the wall and pivot into this "niche" market as well? Increased revenue is allowing them to invest more in development, including the first custom-made display explicitly for Framework devices.

Overall excellent advancements, and a promising future for the company, despite market conditions.

That's so cool! They have Panther Lake, better battery, touchscreen, haptic trackpad, LPCAMM2, and a nicer aluminium chassis that comes in black. Everything that people have asked for, no way! Good work to them!

Also, yooo just checked their website - the new Panther Lake mainboards support the old non-Pro Framework Laptop 13 chassis too, so you can still upgrade your old machine! (and the reverse is true too, if you want of use an older CPU on the new chassis)

I believe they said the only thing you couldn't swap into your old 13 is the new battery. For that you'll need the new chassis to get it to fit. Everything else you could replace.

Nice! Checking the forums, looks like you can change the bottom cover while keeping the old top cover if you want the new display, battery, etc. while keeping a silver lid. Interesting...

I wouldn't do it personally, but I appreciate that you could keep the old silver lid and swap in a new black bottom cover, throw in a colourful bezel and have yourself a nice Frankenstein'd laptop.

Their blog as well as the video described the new laptop as the "Macbook Pro for Linux users", with a similarly solid build, battery life, and performance. But of course with repairability and upgradeability as a focus.

Clicking on some of the options on both web stores, a similarly configured Framework Laptop 13 Pro (Intel X7) is quite a bit more expensive than a Macbook Pro (base M5). If you go up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB SSD, the Framework becomes cheaper because of Apple tax for (non-upgradeable!) memory upgrades. But doesn't include import fees (which will be much higher for FW)

They do offer it with the Ryzen 300 series CPUs (but those have worse efficiency, iGPU performance, etc compared to Intel's new Panther Lake Let's hope that AMD's Zen 6 CPUs catch up!)

Looking at their website, it seems that they will be working with more distros to make sure support is good. Additionally, it's the first device that is "Ubuntu certified"

edit,: Oh, and if you get the pre-built, you can have Ubuntu preinstalled! Not if you get the DIY edition though, interestingly enough. You would think Linux users are more likely to go with the DIY route. (you can also pick no OS preinstalled if you go that route, so I think it's fine)

I really like that Framework lets you BYO SSD, because then you can easily reuse your old drive! Especially with the memory shortage making everything very expensive.

As long as Asahi does not support the M5 this is not an option. And since it will always be lacking behind due to the need of reverse engineering everything it is not a suitable daily Driver. But it is a cool project nevertheless.

e461h 5 points 4 months ago

That’s silly. Older compute works great as a daily driver. Most people don’t replace their computers everytime a new model drops and Asahi extends the life of Mac hardware even further.

Even for M1 MacBooks Asahi does not support things like Thunderbolt, DP Alt Mode, Fingerprint Reader, etc. Also Power management is still a problem because Apple doing things differently then other ARM devices. https://asahilinux.org/...

If I am Buying a 2000€+ Laptop I want everything to work. Not flawlessly, but at least working. And Asahi is not there. That's what I mean with "not suitable as a daily driver". If this is good enough for someone, thats fine. I am happy for them and they should enjoy their device. But most other people buying such laptops would not be happy.

20 hours is optimistic, I have done a lot of observations on different workloads in mobile Lunar Lake on Lenovo with throttling and other tunings applied:

  • 3 watts static content with minimal CPU/GPU usage at min brightness -> 24 hours

  • 4-5 watts in code editors with some plugins and hardware acceleration / basic web browsing -> 15 hours

  • 6-8 watts on video playback (YouTube at 1080p) -> 9.5 hours

  • 10-11 watts at about 50% utilization in medium tasks like exploring the (new 2.5d) Google Maps -> 7 hours

Framework may perform better or worse. Considering Apple makes power optimizations by doing the opposite of what Framework does - they are probably worse at it. Also keep in mind that Linux support takes a while.

I’m assuming they’re talking about 720p video playback at low brightness to get 20 hours.

Also if you have battery care enabled (stops at 80%) and charge at 10% then you only really get 70% of the expected battery life.

I’m assuming they’re talking about 720p video playback at low brightness to get 20 hours.

On the blog, they say 20 hours is from 4K Netflix streaming. Mighty impressive, that! https://frame.work/... or https://frame.work/...

They say it's slightly longer than a 14" Macbook Pro M5, interesting

All the CEO needed to say after funding that fascist was:

Oops, sorry. I didn't check out that developer's history before funding his project. It won't happen again. I promise going forwards that we'll google people's names first before sending them any money.

They didn't have to make a big deal about it, even a simple quickly forgotten post on their personal social media account would have been enough.

People still ask him about it, and he'll talk about anything else.

But he won't give a simple apology.

His silence is deafening.

Better to just go for the EU version of framework without the fascism: https://novacustom.com/

Edit: Changed "All the CEO had to say" to "All the CEO needed to say" to avoid confusion.

Are they, though? I do think it is not right how their public stance is just "we want to be politically neutral". But at the end of the day, when you look at who is actually receiving funding from them now, it looks like they are no longer funding the projects that the community has a problem with: https://frame.work/blog/framework-sponsorships

I don't think the CEO or anyone else was at fault, one of their teams picked people for the company to support, it was either before bad behaviour became apparent, or ignorant of it, then the community complaints and they fixed it
