Stanford scientists regrow lost cartilage and reverse arthritis in major breakthrough

This drug has already gone through Phase 1 human trials for a separate condition.
Phase 1 trials only test safety in healthy adults, but this drug passed. (Still awaiting the paper on the trial)
The delivery method was a once a day pill.
Right? After a lifetime of walking, I'm gonna need some work soon -- feet, mainly. Please let this get to an applicable fix before it's too late!
Oh shit this is awesome. I’ve got some stuff that’s wrong with my knees, and this would be fantastic.
My wife recently had her knee replaced. After seeing her recovery, hopefully this is available before I need mine done. Otherwise, it's gonna have to hurt like hell non stop before I consider getting mine done.
I think a part of getting older is just watching medical science get better as the world gets shittier and realising the two cancel each other out so a natural death is still the preferred option. This is probably how people felt off the back of a world war, the depression, and then in the middle of another world war, someone's like,
"Check out penicillin! I accidentally discovered it like a decade ago."
"Nah, I'm good, thanks."
Yeah my dad was discussing MAID (medically assisted death) recently, he is in his late 70s.
He lost his heel in a motorcycle accident in the 1970s and they butchered up his right inner thing taking a chunk out and putting it on his foot. So now both his legs are in constant pain and he spends most of his day high as a kite to deal with the pain. He can barely walk anymore. He got through cancer a few years back which made matters worse and he lost his sense of taste so he gets to be in pain all day and not taste anything enjoyable.
Nothing medical is going to improve his life drastically so if MAID is what he wants then I will support him.
Semaglutides and other weight loss drugs will hopefully make this treatment less needed in the future. I hope this somehow gets funding, testing, and approval before then to help all the folks with existing damage.
Too bad insurance in the US doesn't cover them for weight loss.
This is a privileged viewpoint. Some people have problems losing weight because sugary foods are literally addicting(and in the US at least suffer is added to nearly everything). Some people experience what's called "food noise", in which their brain is constantly thinking about eating something, which can be a tremendous ongoing strain to block. Everyone is different, and just because some people can diet without going mad or breaking from the strain doesn't mean it should be that way for everyone.
Think about the weight loss drugs being less of an easy way to lose weight and more like it's addressing the mental and physical aspect of weight loss. If you've got food noise and an unhealthy relationship with food, then even if you're able to master your cravings, it takes an outsize amount of your concentration/spoons to handle. This can leave one deficient in other areas like maintaining their mental health, interpersonal relationships, hygiene, or any number of other things. It's not a moral or personal failing to need help, dieting or otherwise.
And that doesn't even begin to touch the subject of food deserts. Many areas of the country, in the middle of dense cities, have absolutely no grocery stores for miles even if people want to be healthy and make food at home.
This is such a short sighted view. Humans are designed to eat more than they need for very good evolutionary reasons, we're just at the point now where you can do so for pennies. Obesity is on the rise everywhere as a result of this.
There are factors outside "just eat better bro" at play here. Carbs are incredibly cheap these days and eating healthily is comparatively expensive. There's a reason (several really) that obesity is higher among lower income folks. You couple that with "food desserts", ready meals and lack of free time and it's a terrible recipe.
I eat well myself and I consider myself lucky to be able to do so. Just a little of putting yourself in the shoes of someone else and not assuming laziness would do you the world of good.
Alas, saying that is so moronic that my irony detector exploded
There is hope for my hands and wrists, maybe!
They need to redeem themselves because Stanford also gave us Peter Thiel
I've been sad lately, watching the creaky old mice shuffling around my yard, so it's nice that there's something coming down the pipe to help them regain mobility.
