Illinois Ends Mandatory Road Tests for Drivers Ages 79-86

12 hours ago by Valuy to c/fuckcars

Beginning next month, drivers between the ages of 79 and 86 in Illinois will no longer have to take mandatory behind-the-wheel driving tests to renew their licenses.

Absolute fucking bullshit. There's no harm in having the test. If you can drive safely, you'll pass the test. And if I have to take a day off work to haul my ass to the dmv to get a new photo taken every few years when my license expires, a retiree can certainly find the time.

The problem with the elderly is that they're basically children. They don't always know when their actions, or inability to act quickly, will end up harming someone else. They would also rather lie than suffer the indignity of having to show they are qualified to operate a vehicle.

The problem I have with taking away licenses from the elderly is NOT the the part where we take them away from dangerous drivers but what we do after. And by "what we do after" is absolutely nothing. We don't have any extra accommodations for transport given to them in place of taking their license away.

Now, that's dependent on the location. Cities will have Senior transport programs, etc. But they are never on par with actually owning a car in our infrastructure.

But if we are taking away a license from some rural living person that uses it to get groceries once a week but fails to parallel park. Yeah, it's not so clear cut on the damage it does to these peoples lives. So, they fight against it.

To be clear, I WANT to take away the license of every unsafe driver. Old, young, doesn't matter. I see you texting and driving in a world ruled by my laws it would be jail.

I'm exaggerating. But you get my point.

In conclusions, the reason these laws get reversed is because there are no means of transport alternatives in this car dependent hellscape we live in. So, rather than work on that problem, these objectively good laws (requiring retesting) get removed, instead of what really needs to happen; which is removal of car dependence for everyone with a priority starting with the elderly.

Truth be told, at least 1/3 of the drivers out there should have their licenses yanked and be given generous access to public options: Buses, trains, rides, etc.

This is going to make roads more dangerous

They say its because they are the safest drivers but I mean. Maybe that is because of the yearly test they have to do. They are still requiring the vision test.

They are the safest drivers because everyone is smashing into each other to avoid these folks looking for the early bird buffet at 20mph

I mean that would be the other drivers fault. I can pass a car without crashing into other cars.

I mean it was a hyperbolic example, the point being that they often drive much slower than the posted limit and/or the speed of traffic, have problems merging, accelerate extremely slowly, brake unpredictably, or are confused. Of course the same could be said about any driver, but it's just a basic fact of physiology that human faculties decline with age and that operating a heavy motor vehicle at that time can be hazardous, especially with the size of vehicles today.

Yep there should be more road testing required as you get older, required for renewals every 5 or 10 years after age 60

Road tests should be mandatory anytime you need to renew a license, no matter the age.

While I want to agree because I expect I’d pass the test, this would further burden a system that is already wildly underfunded and understaffed. You think wait times are bad now? Imagine how bad it would be if every single driver had to retake their test, instead of just signing a form saying their info was up-to-date. Wait times for a simple license renewal would be measured in months instead of hours.

In Louisiana you take your road test at the same commercial place that teaches you to drive. Once you pass they give you the documentation you need to take to the DMV to get your license. Except some of the commercial title places can do that too. Lots of people will pay for the convenience of not going ro the DMV. Given the state, I wouldn't be surprised to find that the Sec of State owns a chain of these places.

True. Just another reason the system sucks.

No, Chicago has a really coherent traffic layout

Also, my employer docked my paycheck because I didn't follow the prescribed route.. That was just garbled text

Also, please rescind my mother's driving license
