Flock's Network Is Losing Value to Cops as More and More of Its Cameras Go Offline

12 hours ago by Gloomy to c/news

A recent series of Flock contract cancellations in Wisconsin shows that the more ALPRs come down, the fewer are likely to go up.

Oh, yes.

Been a while since it's felt like the people have any power.

they'll just start hiding them better.. and in places that are most certainly a bad idea to tamper with, like embedded right inside stop lights

Nothing that can't be fixed with one of those 1000 mW handheld lasers.

Yeah this is the sort of thing we now have to stay vigilant about. Companies, state and local officials, and law enforcement all want a 24/7 queryable surveillance network to happen.

Drones have to come down for fuel. Used mainly when there is a suspected target, not for general surveillance

The they’ll learn that it’s expensive to hide them there, and they’ll have to leave a note about that to their successors when they get voted the FUCK out

My city sadly just voted to renew a contract for another year.

No one wanted this shit, but it happened anyway.

For completely unrelated reasons, I just want to point out that it's two months until Halloween... I think a masked person with a bayonet saw is what's cool this year.

I am so impressed with this solution. I've been shitting on the idea of Halloween for my whole life but I just changed my mind completely.

And it'll clearly work if you do enough of it, based on the OP.

They just stuck two up on Main Street in my city this past weekend, ballsy move as a half dozen nearby cities just terminated their contracts.

Make sure they don’t just switch to another vendor and when they do keep cutting those down.

I think the Flock cameras are proprietary to their network, so the logistics of switching are that much harder. Love this type of news, either way.

But they're still keeping some value: cops can use the ones that still work to stalk women 👌

The privacy aspect is obviously terrible of flock cameras. But this situation if fucking hilarious: Puts up cameras to prevent crimes -- crimes instead removes the cameras. Wooow, really proving how effective they are at preventing crimes huh?! It's almost as the whole thing just demonstrates its all about the police having the power to stalk unknowing victims and not preventing crimes.
