This is a comment I would have given gold to.
If you name a charity/good cause with a straight forward payment process, I'll donate 10 bucks to them.
edit: It was libreoffice and I've added more because I use it myself and never donated so far.

Ooh. This would make a great tradition, here. Count me in.
Edit: LibreOffice. Good call. Done.
Yeah, you gotta leave em green while idling to save the environment, then when you fire up Fortnight, shift to red to get the Xtra fps per second
Ah yes, I recall reading about these features. The yellow ones increase your RAM, the purple ones cloak your IP address, and the black ones reduce your chances of hardware failures ('cuz a black LED never burns out).
No wonder you so rarely see yellow fans when you can easily download more RAM when needed.
That’s why I run my LEDs in parallel.
And it's an amazing case. Every other time I go to update my PCs, I do this little dance. I've done a back and forth between a Fractal case from this line and then some other case the next time I update and I always end up going back to the Fractals. They're just very well designed and look great with plenty of airflow and fan mounting. I'm a big fan.
Of course! I technically have a rear view that looks out over a view but there are 3 others in here that stare at the ceiling all day. I feel bad for the guy on the lowest level staring at the wall.
Both my desktop and my server are in Define R4s. Plenty of room, dead silent, and still good airflow for a silent case.
10+ years and they're still my favorite case, and I'd never want anything else.
Yeah. Computer fashion has been a thing since even before the blueberry imac and hello kitty purse macbook made computers status symbols. A current fashion trend is "RGBLEDs make gaming machines go brrrr!"
But i want to COMPLAIN
They're not.
You can.

Don't know where your looking. Most are.
You want a boring black case. There's not much variation there.
The urge to LEDify every bloody thing has never made sense to me.
I get having a discreet, physical indicator of activity, but having a USB cable that can light up a wall in a dark room, from LEDs on both ends? Too goddamn common now.
"Plain solid black case" *laughs in yellowing beige.
Shit yes. And a key to turn it on.
Cold-cathode tubes please. I was soldering my own connectors and finding MB pins to jack into in 2002.
Joking aside, I got a lot of 20 ancient PCs off a dude in the Thrifty Nickel. Took months tearing them up and going crazy with the LEDs and parts. Still have some!
Uh. You can.
In fact, the vast majority of desktop computer cases in the world are plain black boxes (or grey, or beige, but black seems most popular among the major manufacturers like Dell and HP these days). That's because the majority of PC's in the world are actually boring business boxes squatting on untold numbers of office desks. Just, no one posts pictures of those online because no one gives a shit about the 4,897 identical low-spec computers some megacorporation bought and had delivered on a pallet.
The PC's you're seeing are gaming rigs, and gamers festoon their stuff with silly LED's because it's cool, or at least they think it's cool, or possibly just because it's a meme by now. Or, in some cases, the piece of enthusiast gear you want comes with RGB LED's all over it anyway, whether you like it or not. But these are, by the raw numbers, the minority of the PC world.
You can absolutely build a gaming PC without the LED stuff, including buying a plain non-windowed case for it. I have a machine like that sitting on my desk right now, in fact.
I mean, like... Yes you can?
And the next like 457 don't. Your mouse has a scroll wheel on it, right?
Like these aren't the "boring cases" you are referring to but they are black boxes with at least decent airflow since those boring HP,Dell, and other big system integrator use are pretty horrid for cpus/gpus gamers actually use. That was just from a cursory look of 2 case manufacturers .
Literally one minute, mostly for to mobile load times.

They make plenty of parts that don't have LEDs and even then most of them have the option to turn them off.
My entire system i built just a few years ago has no LEDs that are on but I still love the clear window into the system, let's me know when to clean it.
Or do you just want to continue to yell at clouds?
if you think I’m that clever
Oh no, I didn't. I though you might have watched the relevant special and made a reference.
And you should definitly watch South Park. Matt and Trey are geniuses. Trey was oscar niminated for "blame Canada". They took LSD while wearing dresses when going to the oscar event. They are absolute legends. I'm really not into celebrities, but these guys are just amazing and there is a reason South Park has been on for 26 years.
Black box on the floor gang represent
I'm not looking at my PC, take that led money and upgrade your monitor
The curved ultra wide OLED from Alienware is pretty rad
Because people got bored of plain white, black or beige boxes and then manufacturers noticed if they slap colored lights on their shit, they can get people to spend more money on them. So now everything has lights.
Used to be able to leave my PC running and go to sleep. Now I have to shut it down because it's like a miniature sun in my room.
Your mobo likely has a utility that can control a chunk of the lights. Usually GPUs do too.
reminds me of the auto market - they can sell SUV's for more... there are no more cheap handy pickups....
I'm sure with a little late night cruise, you'll have no trouble finding a cheap handy to pickup.
I paid more for a black case without a window. I think the RGB trend is garish.
I do make an exception for tasteful red accent lighting.
I paid the extra $60 to not worry about cable management. Hiding your shame cost extra.
I also ruined the original by sticking a suction cup phone mount on it. It fused to the plastic window.
I also have a Fractal!
Because more and more building Pcs is a hobby and hobbyists love to tinker and show off their work.
When you play with tech its easy to forget just how small a market we are. Once you get past the people who just use their phone, and the people who get by with a basic chromebook, then the people who just buy a gaming laptop, the ex lease workstation crowd, then the people who buy prebuilts, and now even the subset of gamers who just use a docked steam deck... we really are a hobbyist community.
Because some of us like the pretty lights, they’re cheap to include and the people that don’t like them can always turn them off
That’s true, but really the exception rather than the rule
Because rgb is popular. There are a bunch of standard cases but case makers need tk cater to what most people want because case manufacturing doesnt have the greatest margins due to size and cost of shipping.
A lot of the margins come from fans and lighting.
My current build is in a Define XL R2 (it doubles as a very lazily implemented NAS)
My gf’s build is in a Define C (tempered glass, because the metal side model was sold out when we were building it)
We have a bunch of torrent compacts at work and they're honestly great cases too. Also very good at keeping high end parts cool at a low noise level.
I've always been a fan of closed Fractal cases. They do no-non sense right.
And the build quality is just👌
When I put my new machine together not too long ago I actually went with the Define R5. The only part I couldn't get away from LEDs completely was the MB. I don't think I could find the solid Define7 at the time.
Stupid fads, sometimes customers are to blame, other times companies (SUVs plague, touch screens on cars, smarphone screen notches and removed conectors...).
And even worse than RGB everywhere... glass panels. Yes, of course, put something heavy and fragile on my already heavy PC. And a glass panel is an accident waiting to happen.
This is the case I wanted for a build a decade ago: https://www.quickhard.com/...
I finally ended up with this one earlier this year: https://en.sharkoon.com/product/37933
No glass. No included or purchased fan for the build has leds. However, I have to admit that I recycled a couple of old transparent fans with blue leds (14mm and 12mm) that were the best ones I had lying around, and they are installed behind the frontal dust mesh... which is behind the front grill panel.
I hate how tempered glass is the premium standard. I'd rather have glass that is easier to break if I fuck up but doesn't have a chance to spontaneously shatter.
I had a TV stand do that once, luckily I was the only one there when it happened. If it had happened two nights earlier, it would have sprayed glass shards all over my sleeping daughter. It was energetic enough that I found some pieces I missed on the other side of the room when I was moving out.
Tempered glass furniture looks great, I'll admit, but never again.
Bro don’t you want your rig to look like a fucking SPACESHIP??
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:STSCPanel.jpg looks like a pretty nice setup. No excess LEDs in sight.
The blue leds make the whole setup run cooler. And if you want a really fast build, get an aerodynamic case with a racing stripe.
But seriously, hard agree. I want a big, easy to open easy to access, metal box. With handles if it's possible I'll be using it for gigs etc.
You can. As others have said it's just a trend.
There are parts made specifically for those like you (and me) who don't like unicorn barf all over their room. (My case has RGB fans. I just don't connect these pins tho)
Yeah, never plug in LEDs, and I don't mind the window just because it's easy to see MB error codes.
Other than that I never even look down at the case. Doesn't matter if there's glass or not.
My spouse / co-op partner and I have our co- battle station in our bedroom due to a tiny house so when we rebuilt our desktops we opted for totally opaque cases from BeQuiet and they are great!
Lian Li make nice all black aluminum cases in a variety of sizes.
I blame 50% William Gibson, and 50% Ridley Scott.
Just buy a rack mount case
They make rackmount cases that can take normal ATX components, but even the cases themselves are weirdly expensive for what you get. (Think $30 tower case quality, with sharp edges etc., for $100.)
If all computer hardware was a single solid colour and just worked, there would be fewer reasons to replace it or pay more for different models. It's like skins in an online game: if you give people a choice, some will pay more just because something looks different...some will buy yet another one because it, too looks different.
I bought a Thelio Mira from System 76 and I love the look.
My upgrade cycle is about 10 years. So many more plain options last time. I went with a Roswell R5 last time. Went with a Fractal Design Define R5 this time. Fractal was the only quality plain case I could find. My brother actually has a 330R.
Very happy with my North. Black one with the mesh sidepanel.
