He has abandoned sync development but not the business
10 months ago by craigers to c/syncforlemmy
I like many among you loved sync and am frustrated with the bugs and lack of updates. It seems LJ has all but abandoned the app, so I did some looking around on the business of sync apps Ltd and can see from public records in the UK that he is keeping the business up to date. So it seems he is fine with collecting passive income from ad revenue.
@ljdawson@lemmy.world please just open source this app so the community can fix these bugs.
I myself have moved to thunder, very similar UX, lots of customization, and it's open source.
I am also on summit. Only thing I hate is that I set one tap to open content but there is no one tap for videos so they always open inline with half the video off screen then I hit back to exit and it refreshes my view losing my place. Ill get there once I beat this muscle memory.
Also that you can't single tap to close pictures if they're zoomed
I'll give summit a try, thanks
I've just installed thunder.
Pros setup was super easy although it initially said my instance didnt exist then suddenly found it
Cons Long pressing a comment and getting an overlay popup in order to upvote a comment is very annoying
I'll leave it installed but its not for me right now.
Has anyone found anything else good ?
I tried Thunder but never vibed with personally. The by far best app for me after giving up on Sync was Summit. Which also, if you're annoyed with ljdawson's absence the Summit dev is like the polar opposite.

After testing a lot, I switched to Summit, it's been great.
OK so that works but is awfully clunky - swipe partway right to upvote and fully right to downvote as opposed to tapping on the up / down arrow.
Yeah if that's not configurable I'm out. And I'm damned if I can work out where to configure it
EDIT
OK, it's settings, appearance, comments, show comments action buttons.
With that usability hurdle cleared, OK, I'll give it a burl
Thanks for detailing where to find that.
I was put off by the description of the app, but knowing that some customisation is possible means I'll probably give it a go now.
Will give it a try too
Enable the option to show the action buttons: Thunder Setting: Comments > General > Show Comment Action Buttons
OK maybe I'm thick but that's not what I see on my menu - I'm on android in case there's an ios thing happening here.
From the main screen there's 5 buttons along the bottom - right hand one is settings.
There is no comment option listed. If I go to general then there is a comment subsection (opposite order to above) but it only has comment sort, hide parent, enable comment navigation and combine fab & nav buttons.
So is it one of the last two I need to change ?
I'm on Android, too. I copied the link to the setting but it does indeed have the wrong text. No idea why and sorry about that!
Clicking on the link in my comment using Thunder should let you jump straight to the setting.
If that doesn't work, it's in Appearance, then Comments.
Hey no worries, sorry if that came across a bit harshly.
I ended up finding the right setting eventually - but thank you very much for the reply
Thanks friend, i also just switched from sync to thunder, and this was my biggest gripe. Appreciate you xoxo
I've been enjoying Summit! It does piefed too!
Thunder, eh? First o heard of it! Thanks
This is actually true. If you follow the links on company house website from the OP, the accounts are getting maintained by an accountancy firm.
Yes but he'd be paying and instructing them to do so.
I hesitated for a long time before financially supporting a truly amazing app, though way overpriced. Iβm broke, so I donβt regret a thing. In fact, Iβm happy to block his ads with a custom DNS to cut off funding to this greedy bastard. The least he could do is give paying users an update on whatβs actually happening with their money.
Looking at the Thunder app and it does look similar as far as phone screen is concerned. But does it have the multi column view on a larger screen like Sync? That is basically the one major thing I haven't found in other apps I have tried, both for reddit and Lemmy and is nice for subs that are more image based. I still use a patched version for moments where reddit is still needed (not very often these days but much nicer than the site).
I think it's time for us to move on. I been with sync since the reddit days but I think the end is here.
Voyager, Boost and Summit and many others are all decent. While I don't think they are direct replacements for Sync, they get the job done and have even added Piefed support.
It may be time to let go and accept that this app has been abandoned without any communication.
I don't use the app, but why doesn't someone send some mail to the physical address?
