New level of capitalist hell unlocked: Companies are relying on AI to pinpoint exactly how desperate job seekers are in the hopes they can pay them as little as possible.

2 months ago by sanitation to c/workreform

BussyGyatt 89 points 2 months ago

It's worse than that. Companies buy credit card data and their salary offer is inversely proportional to how much debt you have. More debt = more desperation = lower offer.

On a completely unrelated note, did you know USA hasn't passed a consumer privacy protection law since 1988? That law protected consumers from people gathering their information while renting VHS tapes.

Unionize. Organize.

Did you know if you run over someone, even a VP responsible for making big decisions like to use AI at a company, you probably won't even get a manslaughter charge? If they're on a bike or crossing the street, it's just a whoopsie.

Sorry for the tangent.

I was seriously just about to make a comment if anyone read the article because like, what data would even be usable in this way? Like, Indeed has you input what your desired salary is, and maybe my credit card company sells my spending habits, what else would they use?

The article references the typical data collection practices that companies have been using for about a decade now, just with AI tools instead of manually or other kinds of bot collection. So, your social media presence (whether you'll be a unionization risk), spending habits via companies that you should already not be buying from if you can help it (like Amazon or Walmart), and any other kind of public information on income level and previous employment. The bigger thing is for gig workers (which most liberals on here don't give a shit about) whose wages can be much more easily altered since their employers can control their hourly rates depending on how many jobs that are available or that any given worker has taken on as well as how many potential workers can take on these jobs. For most people, this is nothing new, but yeah the highly adaptable nature of AI tools means that groups of people whose jobs are literally facilitated through these systems are at high risk of exploitation (as per usual).

We lost 50% of our team this year. They all cited a shitty work environment as a reason. (Like most people who quit.) Also unworthy pay.

I'm trying to get the boss chain to understand that it takes a fresh person a year to be fully operational. If you have to replace someone, it directly costs you money, let alone the likely higher salary.

If you as a boss feel like your team is "underperforming", it's your job - not the team's - to come up with KPIs and evaluate if your feeling is just greed or if there's an actual issue, and if there is, it's also your job to remedy it. You need a strategy for that - you know, the kind of thing a boss does.

But since only sales reps get promotions because they're good at selling themselves and bring direct income, we're all fucked. They only know competition and their responsibility stops after their signature, be it a sale or a job contract.

As someone who has been in that situation, at some point you need to realize that poor leadership is the issue, and there is no way you can fix that from lower on the totem pole.

Also, reputation is everything. If your department has a bad reputation in leadership's eyes, no matter what you do personally, you will also be associated with that reputation.

It's best to leave these kinds of places for a fresh start.

I'm in an IT role, similar happened. My team previously had 12 people on it, now there's 7 with 1-2 out of office on any given day. I think I've gone from an average of 15-18 cases with 5-7 active at any time to around 40+ cases with 15-25 active on any given day. This means my quality of work has dropped as I no longer have time for deeper investigation of issues, and I've gotten to the point I really don't care. We're not adding back staffing and this is the status quo now.

It's even more brutal because the latest staffing cuts came pretty close before our busiest quarter normally, and after we were told there wouldn't be any more cuts after the previous round several months before.

Honestly... I'm tired of it. I was already fighting burnout in March before the cuts, and now I just don't have the energy to care, I'm just going through the motions and taking care of my mental and physical health outside work hours. I'll probably quit soon, and I expect it'll be a few months at least before I go job hunting, I badly need a break.

But why do that when you can wantonly exploit your workforce for obscene profits? /s

See, they don't need the best workers, isn't like they are going to be partaking of the services or products they are shoveling, they just need obedient workers who will meet a minimum threshold of quality; anyone who falls below the threshold can be used as an example to ensure the rest keep working.

They aren't delusional, they are owning class capitalists and their incentives are fundamentally different from ours as working class people.

Strider 1 point 2 months ago

Hm, yes to what you're saying but I'd still call them delusional.

The reason being taking established business management knowledge. Yes, you want to maximize profit (there's more to that, but let's leave it at that for here). You calculate how to do this and it is known on general that the positive reinforcement works better and more reliably than the negative path.

So for me, they're delusional in holding on to wrong beliefs. And they're bad managers too.

And let's not get started on the morality of course.

path: 0 25114608 25116760 25116817, hotness: undefined, score: 1, children: 4
Crankenstein 5 points 2 months ago

This is just how the system of capitalism naturally degrades into fascism. Eventually they can't squeeze enough out of the established methods and must tighten their grip. Positive reinforcement only gets you so far, and the owning-class wishes to go further.

And what makes a "good/bad" manager depends on the incentive structure. To us, the way they manage things is considered bad by our interests but, to them, they see it as good management because it is still fulfilling their interests.

But in the sense that they are holding the "wrong beliefs", I guess you could call them delusional, with their delusion being of the owning class. It is just very unfortunate our society is built to reinforce that delusion.

Ah but the fulfilling their needs is not what it does. Only short term. And I'd like long term money if I were in that position. Anyhow, nitpicking I guess.

Had to stop myself from quoting star wars grip tightening quote.

In the end, I'm totally with you regarding capitalism. We could all have a nice life, especially with all the advancements and working together. Star trek has a nice society. Providing what you're good at and like would really benefit all.

Anyhow, won't work with humans I guess. Best of luck to us though.

Same with Uber too. As a driver if you accept a lowball offer, it learns to continue sending you lowball offers and over time your offers get lower on average. Downward spiral

path: 0 25118441, hotness: undefined, score: 22, children: 6

As someone not super familiar with Uber, how does a lowball offer work? Can riders ask for low price rides in exchange waiting longer or something?

path: 0 25118441 25129544, hotness: undefined, score: 4, children: 5
crystalmerchant 8 points 2 months ago

No, the app gives the driver a price for the ride. Driver has 20 (or 30?) seconds to accept or decline. So Uber sits in the middle, controls pricing in both directions

Uber and Lyft both like to send the offer when you are busy making a turn or otherwise busy driving, so the driver has less time and attention to figure out if it is a bad deal.

Very dangerous.

It's actually 10 seconds. And they seem to like to make them pop up when you're taking turns with a rider already in the car. I think they think you'll accept their shittiest offers just to stop the distracting pop-up from blocking your entire map. They're insanely evil.

Uber uses an algorithm to determine its prices.

There was an article I read a couple years ago, but cannot find, where it talked about Uber essentially profiling different drivers. People who did Uber casually were more likely to get better pay, people who were clearly dependent on Uber to pay their bills got lower offers.

They also fuck everyone with dynamic pricing.

A place to discuss positive changes that can make work more equitable, and to vent about current practices. We are NOT against work; we just want the fruits of our labor to be recognized better.

Our Philosophies:

  • All workers must be paid a living wage for their labor.
  • Income inequality is the main cause of lower living standards.
  • Workers must join together and fight back for what is rightfully theirs.
  • We must not be divided and conquered. Workers gain the most when they focus on unifying issues.

Our Goals

  • Higher wages for underpaid workers.
  • Better worker representation, including but not limited to unions.
  • Better and fewer working hours.
  • Stimulating a massive wave of worker organizing in the United States and beyond.
  • Organizing and supporting political causes and campaigns that put workers first.
