I'm getting fucking sick of this orange fuck lying and causing the United States to fall behind. END THE TARIFFS. If you don't vote you're a part of the problem.
I'm getting fucking sick of this orange fuck lying and causing the United States to fall behind. END THE TARIFFS. If you don't vote you're a part of the problem.
I've got my absentee ballot and I'll be filling it out this evening and dropping it off at a mailbox by work when I go in.
Voted my mail in ballot and already dropped it off. Dem all the way down. Fuck the republicans.
And don't try telling me Dems are just as bad somehow or that this is just voting for the lesser evil.
Fuck anyone if you think that. If you do, you're part of the reason we're in this shitshow right now.
Dude, just voting for the lesser evil is good.
Like what do people want, the worse option just because fuck it? Makes no goddamn sense. Yes we all are voting for the lesser evil, that's how politics works. It's all varying degrees of evil and lots of shades of gray.
To be fair, there is some black and white in it. It's pretty easy to say rounding up people based on how they look and putting them in concentration camps is BAD but apparently some people in our society are blind to that reality or (realistically) they're bad people in their souls too.
I can't imagine ever working for or wanting to work for ICE. These people are broken individuals who have embraced bullying and hate as their core identity. Fuck all of them.
Dems arent "good", Democratic socialists are actually keeping their promises, so vote for them if you have one in your area. But if you can't tell that the democratic party is a million times the lesser evil then FUCK YOU. I'm in Utah so this Is literally the first time I've even had a shot at getting a lefty elected and I'm STOKED, even though it will probably be the most moderate dem imaginable
Yeah I'll be voting straight D down the line.
I guess you could say you really like the d.
And, most importantly, vote early and in-person if you can. I normally vote by mail but can't trust mail-in voting this time around, as there are just too many ways for the USPS to legally screw with the vote.
Same here. Even here in a deep blue state where I’m confident in the sanity of most of my fellow citizens ….. it’s not worth the risk of them tampering with my vote.
It helps that my polling place is an easy walk so voting in person is mighty convenient
Mine is thankfully a short scoot away, and very near an excellent burger joint. My adopted grandma and I are going to early vote and then get lunch.
YES. When you see obvious right-wing talking points parroted in comments that are clearly intended to discourage and/or create fear in American voters who may be reading -- I've seen numerous low-key "it's not really safe to vote" thrown in now -- do two, maybe three things.
One, check the account age, and the time of the comment compared to your time zone. Not every bogus comment comes out of Eastern Europe, but a number of them do, they start and stop commenting at odd hours, and it's something that you'll note as you look deeper into suspect comments.
Two, point them out. Take the time to throw out a sentence or two that stops the next reader. You can look at my account history if you'd like to see how I do it. I often write long ones if I'm in the mood, but short ones are even more effective. All you need is a simple "Two day old doomer account. Blocked." It gets the message across.
Three, if you don't feel like arguing with bullshit artists who come back with lies pulled out of their ass in the fraction of the time and real effort it takes you to craft a simple truth, then block. If you really piss them off they'll come back with alts, and of course prepare to be downvoted, but usually it shuts them up.
For as many of us voting Americans who deeply care about our country and are still brave enough to be online right now, you will be doing us all a service, as well as pointing out the form for those whose country the firehose of oligarch propaganda gets aimed at next.
Have you seen a rabid coyote desperately trying to fight with itself? Is there anything you can do to help?
Well you could avoid US products if not doing so already.
I hear you. And fucking Israel too.
That would be election interference unfortunately.
But you can still make sure the right-wing populist disease is contained to the US and doesn't spread to your country
Surely that doesn't extend to expressing my opinion or calling out fuckwits. We might not have a bill or rights in our constitution but we do have freedom of political expression. And just to be clear: I think that Trump is a bad person.
By all means, call them out. It’s election interference when you offer money for votes, when you pretend to be something you’re not, when your goal is chaos or disruption. Telling the truth should always be ok
Had mine done the day it arrived.
And go organize! Get involved as an election observer if you're safe to do so!
Meet your neighbors! Carpool together! Get involved in volunteering!
These times demand the best we can give them, so take good care of yourself and figure out how to get involved in caring about he people and issues around you as well
I hate people arguing over this. Yeah my thing is violation of the constitutions two almost most important protections. due process and search. which really the illegal search is about due process in its own way which is why it requires courts and warrants. regardelss im fine with anyone reminding and cajoling people to vote. we are essentially a one party system until the republicans go the way of the wigs.
He's a symptom of the fact that people's lives are not made meaningfully better no matter which party is in power nationally.
Our only power is local.
They don't get meaningfully better indeed, but one of the two parties can and does make things meaningfully worse
Unfortunately if you're a wage worker, that is patently false.
The only difference is presentation. Red fascist, blue fascist, nicer speeches mean nothing when you're living out of your car.
half the people voted for him man, sure vote more nothing wrong with that but if people vote for trump that doesn't make anything better either
The problem is that many people have learned that their life isn't meaningfully made better no matter which side they vote for, so yes, a lot of people do not vote because there is effectively no point for them to miss a day of work. (Especially now.)
Sorry but that's bullshit.
Dems have tried and succeeded to make lives better. When they haven't its because they don't have the seats to do it without Republicans. And because people keep voting in Republicans who have only ever made their lives worse because of this "both sides" there lives are far worse than if they'd kept voting only dem for 50 years.
If you range to move left, only vote for progressives in the primaries and never let the right win a they doubt cast about following laws and norms to break and hurt people
Bullshit. More of the “same sides” bullshit. If they don’t recognize how much better they have it with one of the parties, it’s all on short attention spans and trolls like this.
Consider ACA as the big one.
Half of the voters voted for him. More than half of the people sat on their thumbs and didn't bother voting.
And you think all those thumb sitters wouldn't vote for trump? At the very least they've shown they dont care and don't have a problem with trump.
Hell yeah man. Social isolation of anyone willing to act like any of this shit is even NORMAL. Shame is literally the only thing these sociopathic fucks care about
I find it worrying that there are approximately 200x more people telling others to vote, than there are people telling others to take any other action on top of voting.
All while it's publicly known that the election is being actively rigged, and would change close to nothing even if it wasn't.
So yeah. If you feel safe doing so, absolutely go vote. But also please consider doing literally anything else aside from that. Even the smallest, slightest protests help.
Organized uprisings removed at least a few dozen totalitarian regimes. So far, voting has removed a grand total of 0. Call me a pessimist, but I'm betting it'll stay at 0 for the foreseeable eternity.
So far, voting has removed a grand total of 0. Call me a pessimist, but I’m betting it’ll stay at 0 for the foreseeable eternity.
I'll settle for calling you a willing liar. Contrary to all expectation, bloodless VOTING just kicked the very entrenched and very supported Viktor Orban out of Hungary this year. Do you need sources for that assertion, or no?
And stop suggesting it's not physically safe to vote. Most of us have early voting, voting by mail and/or drop box despite efforts to make those unavailable, and troublemakers physically cannot spread out that far and that thin across every local site every day of the next four weeks. If they try, it will be on Election Day: they simply do not have the resources to mount more of an armed offense.
In addition, it is illegal by federal law as well as many states law to police within a certain radius of polling sites, meaning that even if the feds try it via ICE, states can shut that shit down themselves, and likely will because all those phone calls and emails to our reps that people like you say are useless are actually NOT: our leaders are feeling the heat, and they're gonna feel it more. The rest of us are preparing: that shit will not succeed.
So you can just stop with the low key discouragement and fearmongering, right-wing talking point bullshit. It's absolute crap on every level, and you obviously don't live here and have never voted in the US or you'd know how it works and more importantly, which way the wind is blowing on the streets. Even South Carolina is in the mix to flip a Senate seat now, and I can't think of a harder red state. You're flatly wrong on all counts.
TL;DR: Anyone who wants these losers out of office, ignore this fearmongering doomerist shit from people who don't even live here. It's safe to vote -- and too unsafe NOT to vote.
I'll settle for calling you a willing liar. Contrary to all expectation, bloodless VOTING just kicked the very entrenched and very supported Viktor Orban out of Hungary this year.
To say it was just voting and nothing else would be manipulative. Quite conveniently, you left out the parts about mass protests and EU sanctions.
In addition, it is illegal by federal law as well as many states law to police within a certain radius of polling sites
How many illegal by federal and state law has this administration done in a year and a half? How many states took any meaningful steps to defend their citizens against ICE's unlawful actions?
So you can just stop with the low key discouragement and fearmongering, right-wing talking point bullshit.
That's a lot of words that never came out of my mouth. Unless you can quote specific parts of my comment where I discourage people from voting, try to sow fear in voters, or present right-wing points, quit lying.
Sure, I already did "other stuff" by making this post, thanks for commenting and continuing the discussion. I also posted in the Illinois subreddit the first day that people could register to vote by mail.
I think the message is for the people that can't even bring themselves to vote. Clearly if they aren't voting, they aren't going to do anything involving more effort. So the goal for them is to just get them to fill in some boxes and sign their name.
If this election is truly rigged and we descend further into fascism, then maybe we can work on getting them to go a little further.
You might be surprised. I know a few activists who refuse to vote because the system is bad (they're not wrong in their analysis, but I think they come to a useless conclusion).
There's a lot of people that think that voting is enough. It's not, especially when you have a two party system where both parties are on the bad side of many issues.
Hungry just voted out an authoritarian this year. This documentary is about Serbia and they voted out their dictator too.
I never call that an administration, but a dictatorship.
If your only issue with the United States is that it is bullying other nations economically, you are so painfully privileged and ignorant.
Seriously, of all the things you could have chosen to make such a grand announcement to vooooote, I really cannot believe you chose tariffs. It is just so unbelievably crass and on the nose for a liberal.
If it affects you, it's important, right? But if it affects (or slaughters) the rest of the world, it isn't a big deal. American trash.
But just remember, realistically we’re voting for nothing to get done. Mango Mussolini will still be sitting on his gold plated throne sending in federal agents to terrorize people, abusing the law and enriching himself and his friends and family.
What we’re hoping for is a Congress that will no longer accept this behavior. That will start reclaiming its constitutional authority and enforcing constitutional checks and balances. That we hope will stop the most egregious abuses of the office. But they’d have to work together to get anything actually done, to restore what’s been lost, to start moving forward again
When what's currently happening is "a lot of bad things getting done", "nothing getting done" is an improvement.
I agree with your sentiment, but it wont stop the US from falling behind. The damage has been done, the US is not trustworthy anymore, and this will not change just because Trump becomes a lame duck.
We, the other countries in this world, cannot put our trust in another country that might change allegiance every few years. Trump is not a cause, he is a symptom of a deeply rotten, racist and bigoted system that we (we as in the international community) cannot accept as a risk. And we do not expect that you actually fix anything if Trump is gone - the issue with your country is that even when you stated that state and religion are to be separated, you instead installed a civic religion which is just as bad as any other religion on earth, and just as resistant to change as any other fundamentalist cult. The US are a fundamentalist terrorstate, and the current expression of this state might change in the blink of an eye.
We won't engage with that crap if we all can help it.
Edit: i have hit some USians deep in the balls. Fine by me. It is to be expected. American Exceptionalism does not cope well with the Reality that they are the bad guys, and they have been for a long time. Putting up a mirror to their fucked up Nazi-like internal organization based on an racist ideology that they kept conserved after slavery was outlawed is an important thing.
American - can't disagree with any of that. We can't pull a "we're sorry" this time like we did after GWB (some of you are probably too young to remember that).
I will remind the rest of you that it can happen to you just as easily, maybe is already. Stay alert.
I am aware. The right wing parties (funded by the same forces that are financing the republicans) are doing their best to fracture europe. Our systems are more resilient, and our populace a lot less brainwashed, which makes me hope that we might resist this storm. But there is no guarantee.
Big difference is that even when Europe fractures, i can't even imagine that we might just drop the institution of the EU as a whole or go to war with each other. For the last part there is absolutely no public support in the european populace, outside of a few countries that are internally fractured already, which might cause civil war in the most tensioned countries.
Edit: on the other hand, i can easily imagine a civil war in the US over the future of the country. The culture wars crap has been forced into the minds of the easily manipulated with limited life experience, and it might take a bloody conflict to put the ghost of the confederacy finally into their unnamed graves where they belong.
Yeah, European nations have no history of conflict...
See my reply here: https://anarchist.nexus/...
It Can't Happen Here (This Time)
I didn't say that. I said that the probability of european countries attacking each other is fucking low, and that is because we have worked together for decades now, which is unprecedented in the history of Europe. There is no real animosity between european states, in contrast to the very real and intense animosity between red and blue states in the US. We are also dependent on interstate trade because of the common marketplace, and every state in this union is very aware about the fact that losing access to this common market will spell economical doom on them. Add this to the fact that the militaries in Europe are currently very much occupied to make sure they do not get crushed by russian aggression, and you have a pretty solid block of states that have no interest into going to war with each other.
You're not wrong.
I remember 25 years ago, sitting out the national anthem at a college football game and some asshole from Texas threatening to knock me out. 9/11 had just happened and the country was neck deep in a performative patriotic mourning ritual.
But I knew where this was headed, and I wasn't wrong. Voting for the red team or the blue team doesn't matter. Voting gives us no meaningful power nationally.
There's still good happening on the local level, at least, but that doesn't make much difference for you all outside the US.
Couldn’t have written it any better. And the downvoting army is still too naive to see reality as it is.
They still cling to the image of the US as the great protector, while the rest of the world has realized that they have to become independent from them to make sure they are safe. An US which changes allegiance on a whim depending on a vote every few years cannot be a stable ally, and much less a protector. We have to be self-sufficient, and also able to protect ourselves from our previous protectors, because they are not to be relied upon - in reality they might be the biggest aggressor we have to defend against because of their megalomania.
Ok. But not voting will make it all worse.
So...like OP said........
This is not what i meant. I said that even if you vote, the restructuring of the world has started, and your elections won't change that anymore. I fully advocate for voting to get this crony administration kicked out, but the place of the US in the world that it had before has been not only left empty, but it has been removed alltogether.
Meh, people’s memory is short. After four or eight years of another Barack Obama type, the world will being seeing us in that light again. America will continue to be an economic and cultural powerhouse, because the rest of you are, by comparison, so listless and unproductive. Only China can compete economically, but they have zero cultural motion.
We are not economically as powerful as the US, but that is mainly caused by decades of the petrodollar. The hostility versus science in general in the US has reached a new height, which already caused a massive brain drain. The damage to federal institutions will take decades to fix if y'all ever get together long enough to even start doing so, and the next "dear leader" in that timeframe can wreck any progress you made to recuperation what you've lost.
Your countries voting decisions have destroyed trust into your democratic nature and into how well your institutions are equipped to deal with a traitor like Trump (hint: they aren't, not one bit, and it has been this way since Nixon and Reagan). The worst damage that has been dealt are the attacks on NATO and the absolute disregard for the territorial integrity of your allies. This is something we CAN'T forget, because it means you left behind the structure that gave your place in the world in the first place: a strong military and economic pact between the US and Europe.
The issues shown up by Trump do not go away when he goes away. Europe in general places a lot of importance into stability between neighbours, thanks to the permanent state of war we have been in for most of our history.
The USA isn't stable, and it won't without it being the result of a civil war, thanks to your civic religion.
You might want to hold off a few more weeks before attempting to predict the future. MAGA is crashing and burning fast right now.
As for democracy itself, it’s looking like it’s going to survive here. Trump and co. don’t have the competency or work ethic for a real takeover. When they’re finally out (coming soon), yes, we need more laws and fewer “norms,” and I think Democrats have finally gotten that message in a way that the Biden administration failed to.
Regarding NATO, the EU, etc., you’re really underestimating how short memories can be and how fast perceptions change. The EU would be relieved and eager to accept a sane, normal America again. They don’t want to spend money they don’t have on defense, and they can’t coordinate for shit when it comes to threat response. Their failure in Ukraine is just as shameful as ours.
The brain drain issue is real and sad, but like tourism, it can and will reverse just as quickly.
Of course there will be permanent damage to America from the Trump era, but it’s almost over and it wasn’t actually catastrophic in the sense of “America is on an inevitable trajectory of permanent decline” the way some ML and anarchist commenters on Lemmy would like to believe. Trends can be reversed, and when this one is, America will still be starting from the strongest position in the world.
MAGA is just one expression of the rot that has accumulated. The Tea Party also crashed and burned, and then simply transmuted into MAGA, and the next populist rat catcher in the fangs of the billionaires will be selected even before Trump is gone.
The real takeover is already completed. Your democratic institutions have been gutted and made into tools for the executive (outside of the central bank, but they are working hard on that), your supreme court infiltrated, your congress and senate utterly unable to reign in the executive. Your military has been "cleansed" of people who might resist. Your media is fighting for their lives against the FCC who is getting weaponized against them, or they have already surrendered or were belonging to the billionaires in the first place.
There is not much left of anything that made your country great, because all of these are signs of an autocracy, not a democracy. The US are going the same way as Russia did - a democracy on paper, while not representing that in any real way.
And because of all of this Europe will not forget this. Yes, we do not actually want to increase military spending, but it is happening in the largest scale Europe has ever done this outside of WW2 (Perun has a great video regarding this, where a) Europe is supporting Ukraine with more Money than the US now b) after a ramping up-time of a few years military spending is now bigger and growing faster than anything russia can accomplish even with a wartime economy.) Our "failure" as such is that the LNG deliveries from Russia will still go on until next year (13% of EU LNG still comes from Russia this year) and that there is no political will to put boots on the ground, which is hard to sell to the populace.
And i would not bet even a cent on that you are out of Trumps claws. He will for sure try to get a 3rd term, regardless of what your constitution says, and he has a supreme court that will ensure that, just as they ensured that he is pretty much untouchable. The decline will not be catastrophic for now, but the US's place in the world is not left empty, it is gone - no other country can take that risk anymore after the US threats against other sovereign states, the meddling in South America and the buddying-up to Putin.
Edit: Goddamn, even Canada prefers to deal with the EU rather than with their southern neighbour, and they will also not forget the threats against their sovereignity for a long, long time. The current rerouting of trade routes will not stop regardless of your midterms.
Without knowing what country you’re from, I can still guarantee that a shift towards the right wing fascist movement is a global problem. Whatever is happening in the US can easily happen elsewhere, and in some cases, has already started in Europe.
The fascism is also rising globally. Probably even where you live.
Is there anything redeeming about you at all?
Yeah this person is either a lying piece of shit or an awful parent.
If you could convert your downvotes into dollars you could provide your supposed child with a better education than you apparently got, or didn't get.
Unfortunately the US has proven they can drag much of the world down with them.
I question your ability to comprehend basic sentences if you cannot actually quote
Tagging you as fed, have a wonderful day.
Edit; your account was created July 18th, 2023, and you have four comments. Nice alt account.
Eight day old account here to mindfuck the vote, lol. Blocked.
If this is a reference to...
Yeah, I will be voting straight R down the line.
WTF is wrong with you?
I was referring to someone here who thinks they are going to be voting straight R down the line on the ballot.

Fuck all republicans, and those who didn't vote, who wanted this (or allowed this) to happen in the first place.
