Being fat is a choice the vast majority of the time, and I have a huge bias against big people.

I used to be fat (250ish lbs (110ish kg) at 5'8"ish (172ish cm)), and as much as I would like to blame my shit on anything else, the person feeding me, the person sitting at the computer for hours, the person actively avoiding all physical activity was me and no one else. After I got diagnosed with some weight related shit, I turned my entire life upside down, am at a much healthier 150 lbs (68ish kg), and feel so much better, both physically and mentally.

I'm aware of my bias, and I make every active effort to counter it in my actual dealings with bigger people. Especially because there are certain circumstances, however rarely, where it may not actually be their fault. But I'd be lying if I said my initial impression was anything except "God, what a lazy, fat fuck."

The rise of feminism has seen the steady devaluation of the contribution of men in those areas of society where they should be most active. Rather than celebrate and recognise what's right, the focus is on attacking what's wrong.

The majority of men are lonely, isolated and uncared for. Many feel unvalued, unsafe and vulnerable. There is less community support for men than there has been in the past, less institutional support, and a continued decline in the tolerance of men being in shared places. The minimisation of value in societal roles is yet another way that men are cut off.

This seems to escape the vision of feminism. There is always claim of ideological alignment, where the empowerment of women directly benefits men, but when it comes to any form of concrete action that helps men that need help, or celebrates men that contribute - it's nowhere to be seen.

Python is just as bad if not worse then JavaScript. The fact that if you misspell a variable name, instead of giving an error like any sane language, Python code will still run, but do something different then it looks like it does, creating a hard to spot bug is just awful. I have quite a few. I don't believe in copyright laws or IP in general. I think it holds back innovation and exists solely to benefit megacorps like Disney or pharmaceutical companies.

For example - you develop a new drug that really helps some people. You charge $50 a pill even though it costs you $5 to produce. Without the government protecting IP, another company will come around and produce it and sell it for $6 a pill, providing cheaper access to healthcare.

People will say "what would give someone the incentive to make new things?" Without actually thinking it through. For a great example of how lack of IP is a good thing, look at how Shenzhen went from a fishing village to a Chinese San Francisco in a few short decades.. one company will take the product of another and iterate on top of it.

Another unpopular opinion is I'm pretty absolutist with free speech. I think certain things like calls to violence or intentional defamation of character should be restricted. But pretty much everything else should be fair game.

I believe in open borders and think the US should return to the late 1800s style of immigration. We're gonna need the population to compete with China in the coming century.

I also think that the primary investment into climate change at this point should be preparing for the inevitable changes instead of trying to prevent the inevitable.

They spend their days indulging themselves at the expense of others in such an extreme way that they make it sound like asexuality didn't exist, because it was the Greek view that human nature was the same for everyone. And this tyranny they tried spreading all over the world because they thought it was what democracy was, which brings us to Alexander the Great, the world's most undeserving "great" conqueror. Imagine trying to enact revenge for a conquest on your land that happened more than two hundred years ago, having the historical records lie to inflate you, and once you get even with your enemies, decide that while you're at it you should conquer people further East, all while being unable to actually properly care for the lands you conquered.

Sentience in humans begins at 4 years old (mental age). I don't consider humans younger than that to be people. I also firmly believe that you have to have some form of consciousness, self identity, and clear cognition to count as a person.

A human corpse is not a person, a brain-dead patient is not a person, and a human with severe mental disorder should not be held to the same standards as other people.

Similarly, anything that does have sentience is clearly also a person, and should be treated as such. Animals such as crows, parrots, octopi, dolphins, whales, and some monkeys and apes are demonstrably as or more intelligent than some human children. They should not be treated the way they are.

Also, names in this day and age are useless, at least official ones. We have computers, we already use government issued ID for everything, having a name just makes things confusing. I am against a law allowing LGBTQ couples to adopt children in my country (Poland). I am not in any way against it as a general idea, but Polish society is full of full-on bigots and these kids would be subject to so much bullying, it's really against their best interest.

I don't have anything that important to say but I will say that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is one of the worst movies I've seen this decade and somehow it has an RT rating of over 90% for both critics and audiences.

Imagine a murder mystery that takes over half the movie's runtime for the murder to happen, a script that sounds AI generated, a plot centered around a plot point that makes literally no sense, and probably the stupidest ending I've ever seen in a movie. Yet every time someone talks about that movie online goes on about how fun it was, I swear everyone has to be a bot because I can't believe that many people liked this hack of a movie.

The rich will fight with all they have to keep their investments secure and rent/prices for common people soaring. They will not relent till the bubble bursts, if it ever will. But pop society has tried to "fight" them for centuries, not realizing it is a futile battle and that social class hierarchy is not something humanity can live without.

So instead of fighting those monsters, society needs to assume their inhumanity as natural and try to work around it, instead of bickering about it. The government should take steps to make socially positive initiatives more lucrative for investment and allow gradual reshaping of their portfolios over time from overvalued things like real estate and pop media to better things like green tech and accessible healthcare.

All roads in the UK that are currently 30mph limits should be lowered to 20mph, and those at 40 lowered to 30. There should be a systematic review of those at 50 whether they should be 40. National speed limit should be lowered by 10mph.

I don't care about data privacy. I'm half way to my overall goal, I've been fat all my life. It's not until I genuinely though I should lose weight that I put in the time to figure out my shortcomings with dieting and to stick to my activities.

If a diet overwhelms you slow down. If something fails, figure out why it's not working. DON'T ASSUME! My stupid ass thought I had mental mental reactions to not eating takeout. Turns out during my casual diet attempts I was eating like 800 calories a day.

I stopped attempting to jog, now I've been going on daily walks for the past 3 months

Citizen of a county pay the government taxes who provide you with the infrastructure and organization of professors and lecturers to help you with your education. But in developing countries like India, education of the same standard is private i.e. for profit and your education is second priority.

Even in major cities, where you would expect the education to be of the standard to propel a student to a university wherein they identify their new roles in society is abysmal.

I think student loan debt to some extent is a parallel problem. What US is trying to tackle during and after higher education is what developing countries face on the way to university.

I know that standard of education comes into play which is one of the factors because of which debt is astronomically high but I admit I don`t really know much (about the student loan debt problem).

At least in my jurisdiction if you look at protected handicap parking, you’ll see that every space has an additional half space next to it to allow for egress of assistive devices. Without these protective half spaces built into every handicap parking space, people requiring such devices would face the undue burden I mentioned above; these handicap spaces give people equal access.

My controversial take is that only people requiring such devices should be granted access to these spaces. Yes, I know that there are many people that have a more difficult time walking and can benefit from closer proximity to their destination, but in my opinion, these requirements shouldn’t be for the “benefit” of anyone, but only the equal treatment for those facing the aforementioned undue burden.

In my opinion, for every one person needing an assistive device, and every two people who would simply benefit from close proximity, there are numerous people who use handicap parking for convenience. I’ve seen motorcycles with handicapped parking placards for goodness sake.

M2F trans athletes shouldn't be able to compete in women's athletics. Admittedly, I do believe I'm not educated enough to form a complete opinion on this, but at the very least I feel there should be a set amount of time between hormone therapy and competition.

My understanding is that after some amount of time, the physical difference in muscle mass does get down to equivalent levels, but that doesn't necessarily change the fiber structure has that may have built up over time that is more beneficial in men both is muscle build and recovery. However, hormones can't change some physical attributes like height.

I am absolutely open to change because I don't like that I believe this way. I may be completely incorrect in my assessment, and can definitely be swayed with some legit studies in the topic. Universal Basic Income will never work because it doesn't implement game theory properly. People who say that paying everyone a living wage wouldn't cause inflation simply do not understand that every landlord would jack up their prices, all food and other essentials would manufacture fake scarcity to keep profits up, and no difficult, awful jobs would be done consistently enough for society to function. It really pissed me off when Kurzgesagt covered this topic and handwaved that no inflation would occur with a MBI system, and I heard the same thing on reddit all the time. Yes, it would. Competition doesn't just leave human nature because you give people some money to live on.

What we really need if we want to fix the Great Depression 2.0 are pragmatic public services. The government needs to heavily fund new housing to increase supply (implicitly dropping prices), and heavily remove laws that force corporations to prioritize shortsighted shareholder profits over long-term stability, so people have more leverage when negotiating their own salaries. Ultimately I do not think these are problems that can be solved with more government oversight, and while capitalism is not a perfect system, the logic of it at least works better than communism. Communism failed faster and harder than capitalism for a reason, it's not the cure-all people online seem to think it is.

Many first unpopular opinion, which seems to be not unpopular anymore was in 7th grade (approximately 13-14 years old) we had a project week about drugs. I was the only one who said that I actually thought drugs should be legal. That was 20 years ago.

Other than that the closest thing to an unpopular opinion is that I sort of think arranged marriage between people in, e.g. the west and Thailand is ok IF the marriage also include empowerment clauses, e.g. full support for the woman to study or whatever she values. Also, there should be some beneficial exit clauses. It is sad that the women find these arrangement/arrange marriage beneficial, but as long as they do I support their desperate attempt to better their life. And yes I do know of some examples - both very good and bad.

If a man and woman have a child together but aren't married, the man should have zero rights regarding that child, and zero responsibility to pay for it. Without marriage or a written agreement from the mother, he should be considered nothing more than a sperm donor.

People are really entitled when it comes to copyright, just because they like something they think it's okay to steal it, just because "it doesn't hurt anyone", an while in some cases that may be true, they act offended when something is behind a paywall or when an artist or company try to limit access to a piece of media. The author and the copyright owners are in their right to do whatever they like with any song/movie/show/book, and people shouldn't be mad because someone limit access to something they rightfully own. Imagine if your neighbor comes walking into your house and steal food in your freezer because they say "they're a fan of your food" that's fucking stupid. Stop bitching about not being able to consume like the pigs you are and try to produce your own things instead.

Lemmy should get rid of votes. Activitypub should too.

Teenagers Are Adults

(not sure this is an opinion. it's biological fact. but peeps get VERY Angry when I write it)

Child beauty contests are completely harmless. Their negative impact is in no way greater than anything competitive sports does to children. People, however, need to do tons of virtue signalling, so they scream about the terrible "sexualization" going on there, when it is in fact just some kids playing dress up, one of the most natural games children play.

There are very few actual atheists - if any. Most "atheists" I've encountered are just edgy non-practising Christians. And I bet that goes for other parts of the world with other religions, too.

Most human males should be castrated.

Men commit almost all rape and murder, but no one seems to think this is a problem we need to do anything about. If any other group committed 90% of serious crimes – let's say immigrants – people would be calling for them to be rounded up and exiled. But when it's men, that's just the way things are, nothing to be done about it.

But we know exactly what to do about it when we're talking about other species. We castrate male cattle because bulls are dangerous and steer aren't. Violent criminals typically have elevated testosterone levels. It doesn't take a genius to realize that putting men on testosterone-blockers is going to make them less dangerous.

What will be the other effects?

1. Men will be be weaker—Meh, physical strength is less useful now than it was in the past.
2. They'll have less hair on their bodies and more on their heads—Awesome.
3. They'll won't be able to get hard—That's what viagra is for.
4. They'll lose fertility—They can go off blockers while they're trying to have a child. Or you could just have a small number of uncastrated sperm donors.

I'm an anarchist, so I don't want to force this on anyone. But if I believed in prisons or police, I would also believe in mandatory castration.
