For sure, and all because the US has zero federally required sick days and that energy is directed at the little guy, especially immigrants. He was probably scared to call in sick and/or too poor to be able to miss the pay for the lost hours.

If you interact with other people, you can't will yourself out of exchanging some bacteria and viruses with them. The only way to kind of avoid it is to totally isolate yourself from any contact, total 2 meters away from everyone forever, which a person working at an airport physically can't do

I once worked at a place that had a fun “birthday wheel”

You got to spin it on your birthday and get a prize.

After 7 years of working 60 hour weeks I got a $5 Pete’s gift card. The same day a marketing intern won a Vespa.

It was an important lesson about how hard work does not pay

Shortly after my company was acquired I got notified of my 20 year anniversary. They kept our original hire dates from old company.

They let you pick stuff from a catalog. I got a shop vac and a "pearl" necklace. 5 years later, they added a visa gift card option. Always take the gift card.

I see 2 morals to the story. Firstly, don't work at BK for 27 years because they don't give a shit about you, and you could probably make a better living at many other jobs in that time. Secondly, that rage-bait gathers attention on the internet and can possibly lead to riches if you promote your story of injustice to the public and solicit donations.

Went to look for his food truck in Nevada to check it out and there is a lot about this 1 year old story that doesn’t add up. For a guy who never missed a day of work for 29 years and allegedly bought a food trailer named “K27Y”, there’s no business listing or web presence at all. His Facebook page even looks fabricated. Very very odd. Either something happened that caused him to change his mind and quit working and/or he took the money and ghosted his supporters. Something just seems off about this story.

Controversial take, but why would someone deserve recognition for carrying out work duties as per contractual agreement?

He did what he was paid for, no more, no less. Being sick or not is by and large outside of someone's immediate control and should receive neither reward nor punishment.

You gotta admit, that kind of attendance is pretty unheard of. Everyone would have taken at least a few days of in a typical year.

I chewed on your comment for a while before writing this, but I think I (also controversially) agree with you. The employer-employee system is cold and uncaring, as per its design. No employee should expect some sort of 'special recognition' from their employer, and no employer should expect to receive more labor than they pay for. I think a lot of the replies you are getting are geared more towards how people think things OUGHT to be, i.e. an infusion of humanity and caring/emotion into a cold, mechanical socioeconomic system that treats people as cogs. I imagine you and I are approaching this from different perspectives, but at the end of the day your employer is NOT your friend. They do NOT have your best interest. An employee should NOT go above and beyond, unless compensated fairly for doing so. [Disclaimer: I am (probably clearly) one of those lefties that does not support the current socioeconomic system and I think things OUGHT to be different, but they arent.]

I'm going to go ahead and ask you to reread what you just wrote.

The reason I said curiosity is because you're framing this as a question instead of just letting us read you talking about it directly.

People ask questions when they're curious. I get that you're asking a rhetorical question, but either way it's not a genuine way to phrase this or ask about it, hence the quotes.

I also added the catchall "or any other reason" because this shit is just all around incorrect and there's absolutely no way to justify having that opinion.

Ahh, I think what your missing is something called perspective.

If you're in a good relationship with a partner then as the years pass you find yourself appreciating them more and more.

If you're a hardworking business owner or manager that's actually there doing the work alongside the employee, you gain the appreciation that even though their task may be different, they are just as dedicated and as hard working as you are (while also receiving less income).

If you're absent or detached from the process, of course you're only looking at the contractual obligations and if they're "holding up their end" of the deal. It takes time and emotions, hard sweat and tears. Not something you're just suppose to "get". It comes after those nights where equipment eventually breaks, A/C goes out, Rush times are beyond your capacity or anything your facility could handle, customers are literally in your face screaming at you. It builds a bond in hell that a contract could never really spell out properly.

If you don't feel anything after that especially with a romantic partner, you might want to explore the idea that maybe you're missing out on a part of life that wasn't emotionally developed in you and there are steps to rectify and address the situation.

Good employees should be recognised by employers to boost morale and encourage other. Keeping good employees who know the place and all the history is good for business. That's what's in it for the employee. Other than just being nice to someone who's been in your life for so long.

I agree that attendance isn't necessarily good and shouldn't be rewarded. He likely came in sick and employees without a healthy work/leisure balance are less productive so it's not a good example to set either.
