What rule changes would you propose for this community?

9 months ago by simp to c/asklemmynsfw

People are recently posting picture posts and I think it's time we revisit our community rules just in case this is not what people want.

Would you change the rules for the c/asklemmynsfw community in any way and if so how?

Discuss and vote on potential changes.

Neu 16 points 9 months ago

Personally I think the rules should be very simple and easy to follow while keeping it strictly about questions.

Something along the lines of:

  • only text type posts, links can be in the body, pictures can be in comments.
  • no AMA/horny let's talk
  • all questions should be about nsfw
  • no promotional content of any kind
  • always be respectful

I don't think the comments should be heavily moderated, if someone makes a respectful comment we shouldn't really care even if it is political or not on topic. we should really focus on the post but comments should only be moderated in case of hate/harassment/spam/disrespect

I think a hard line should be taken in terms of pictures. Looking at the recent posts by Mickey and RopeBunnySimone, the pictures add absolutely nothing to the post except to try to draw attention to the post. It's introducing shades of grey to the rules that don't actually benefit the community. This is a text-only community for a reason - because it's meant for discussions and questions. I don't think it sets a good precedent to allow users to vie for attention by using flashy pictures.

Aside from the photos rules, I do think there's a been a very large influx of users posting to this community just because it's the largest text community and not because they are asking a question to the community. Specifically, a lot of general "I'm horny, anyone chatting?" or "I'm bored, ama" type of posts feel like they really don't belong. Honestly, I feel a ban on ama-style posts is necessary.

I posted NO pictures here except as a test today. You ASK a question and add a picture that** directly** illustrates your question. As a mod here I have removed many posts with pictures.

I opened the community and the last three posts included pictures, one of which is your last post. It doesn't matter if it's your first time because it's directly relevant to the direct question asked here.

Your picture also contributes absolutely nothing to your post or illustrates your question even slightly. Ignoring the extremely problematic elements, you could have left it out and your question would still have had the exact same impact without it.

"Your picture also contributes absolutely nothing to your post or illustrates your question even slightly"

Thanks so much for the clarification. And here dopey me was thinking that a picture showing dark areolas and nipples might be relevant to a question about dark aureoles and nipples

I agree with @Biapathy@lemmynsfw.com

While your pictures illustrates your description, it does not add any real value as anyone could understand your intention and also just google it to find the same thing.

There is a real value for a text only nsfw community, it promotes discussion.

Absolutely no politics involved. -- It shouldn't be an issue but it's better to state it plainly. Should be rule 1. Instabanable and permabanable. I HATE politics. I'm not the only one. Politics only brings arguments and threats.

No people selling sex, or pictures of sex, or sex acts. No looking for hookups. -- Is a discussion area not a hey wanna pay to play or pay to watch/see. People trying this end up spamming communities with the same crap over and over. If you are searching for a playmate go elsewhere. These are together because the majority of the hookup posts I've seen elsewhere end up being pay to play. Discussion about paying should be heavily limited because that will invite the vultures of "I'm available" to come in.

No illegal acts. -- This is not limited to but should include children. I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, if you think it's OK come visit me personally I will introduce you to a friend of mine. Again it shouldn't need to be a rule in a civilized world but there are people who will try at some point. I'm pretty sure that is a basic Lemmy rule but should be clearly stated community rule.

Lemmy is growing and will continue to do so which will bring more junk and issues.

Politics is extremely hard to define generally.

"How would you react to a stranger of the same sex buying you a drink?" is, IMHO, a perfectly acceptable question for this community that could easily be considered political by some. More borderline would be "Would you sleep with someone from the opposite end of the political spectrum? How about date?" Again, I think these could lead to some fun discussion without it becoming a problem.

Regarding illegality, lemmynsfw's rules already cover that pretty well. I wouldn't put a blanket ban on discussing anything illegal. The question discussing recreational substances recently comes to mind. Plus I wouldn't want to rule out same-sex, anal, or anything else I consider perfectly ethical that is deemed illegal in some places in the world.

That is where the community needs to chime in and define what is acceptable.

Personally if you are asking if someone wouldn't have sex with someone on the other end of the political spectrum is asking for trouble and is a political discussion. The political question is front and center. If it ends up with fighting rather than a discussion it will only turn bad. Once fighting/argument happens we will begin to be just like the other communities with infighting, take for instance the current dustup on c/asklemmy over Rule 6. I've already left communities like this and will likely leave others as well. https://www.difference.wiki/...

Asking for an opinion of someone asking to buy a drink is not. The political aspect is secondary and only comes about when someone has an issue with the act and feels it should be illegal, though it is generally accepted as not. This also segways into the legal aspect section. This is an English language community. In English speaking countries and culture we have a pretty standard set of national laws that deal with acts that are in an of themselves are considered illegal and immoral. That would be a great place to start. Adding the illegality statement also allows the community to self police and quickly identify issues on top of the instance wide rule.

I'm sure many of us recognize wikipedia as a place with the knowledge to help identify the majority in a situation. For same sex and sodomy we can begin here. https://en.wikipedia.org/...

https://en.wikipedia.org/... is probably a category that will deal with most if not all NSFW cases outside of the political aspect.

Counterpoint:

In my experience, the only people concerned with "keeping politics out" of a space are people who don't belong to politicized groups or hold politicized identities (thus affording them the comfort to not pay attention to politics or discuss it), and the majority of the time it's because they themselves hold "political opinions" that would get their nose broken if they said them without a keyboard to hide behind. I'm not super comfortable with capitulating to that crowd, especially when the rules would more often punish people talking about their experiences than aren't the cisheteronormative default.

Overly harsh? Maybe. But if I'm trapped in this political moment, I want to be able to discuss what that means for personal life, and that includes how personal politics can interact with sex ajd relationships.

I don't subscribe to anything political nor do I participate in political groups. I believe that politics have a place and those people who would like to discuss them are free to do so in a place where politics are fully accepted as a topic. I don't believe anyone of celebrity or power should discuss their person views on any political situation. And I choose to keep as much of my political views to myself because they are my opinion, we all know the rude and crude description of opinions, so I choose not to stink the place up.

If someone wants to continue a discussion in a more political fashion they would be free to do so but outside of this community. They could do so via private messages, direct contact, or even another community they create dedicated to expanding on the idea of their political view of the sexual topic. I would encourage them to simply state that they would like to discuss a political aspect of a conversation and move to a new post in let's say c/AskLemmyNSFW-Politics with a link to the discussion. They could go so far as to create their own Lemmy instance and discuss any topics they choose including those deemed violations of human rights. But those people who choose not to participate can easily avoid the discussion and the root community can focus on their chosen area.

Therein the political discussion can happen but in a place that is dedicated to the political aspect. I'm guessing everyone has topics they choose not to view and/or participate in.

I agree with all your comments especially in regard to politics. Even if it doesn't start out purely as left vs. right, you will have someone who just has the right answers for everyone condemn a post or a comment because it offends their political leanings. I never can understand these people. This is a meaningless social media platform no different than all the rest.... in a group that allows posters to ask sexual questions....yet some people just have to impose their opinions on everyone else.

Thanks...

I've moderated for a couple communities and private gameservers in the past. I've also seen arguments begin over perceived slights let alone political opinions devolve into chaos. It's made worse by the perceived anonymity and lack of recompense.

A community needs clearly defined rules to allow discussions about sensitive topics so that a it can remain polite and foster communication that is of high quality information. This requires people to be polite and respectful... political opinion, so far in my experience, is anything but. Studies show that polite communication can enhance the perceived quality of information shared, making users more receptive to ideas and responses.

This is the reason why I do my best to follow this ethos: https://lemmy.world/post/39694506

I should amend the statement to I hate political discussions.

Continuing this thread of discussion further would in and of itself end up being a political discussion.

Adding it to the community rules reinforces that it is not acceptable.

Edit: A thought just occurred to me. The LemmyNSFW Instance rules are not shown to users on other instances. That means adding the rule is pretty much needed since someone self hosting could assume that the community allows any NSFW content.

Nothing to add for this community in particular, but just since I don't know where to go.

Can we do something about the 'bf cheated' spam that's been going on? They post only that title with an onlyfans or similar link to literally every NSFW community, under a new account each day (if not more frequently).

Sorry again that this isn't exclusive to this community, I'm just tired of seeing the spam. I always report them, obviously, but there's got to be more that can be done.

I'm thinking of adding a no pictures rule and a rule against upvoting content that goes against the rules. This would penalize all people who are upvoting that content in the future.

JRaccoon 10 points 9 months ago

I agree on the no pics rule but penalizing for upvoting won't work like you would expect. Many people browsing their feed won't pay attention to the community the post is in and just vote based on what they see. And even if they notice the community, you can't expect everyone to know/remember the rules of every community.

Define "spamming."

Some people think a creator having an OF account at all means anything they post is immediately "spam," and I completely disagree.

Hate to bring up Reddit but I used to help mod Normal Nudes and we allowed the PEOPLE with only fans to post but only using an alt account not linked to their advertising account. It's not a ban on the people who sell, it's a ban on using that sub to advertise.

I think something like that would work, but if there are no pictures and no AMA it doesn't seem necessary here, or not yet anyway. Getting the voices of sex workers seems valuable in a discussion thread.

Forcing creators to make alternate accounts just so incels don't feel the sting of finding out someone they're attracted to needs to pay their rent is ridiculous.

Something for the community, maybe a title tag system, like for posts for advice, the title starts with [Advice], may an Ask me Anything should have [AMA], and general conversation be, well, something. Just a way we can sort and filter if necessary.

I think we should ban NSFW material. I love browsing this page at work but all of the NSFW questions make it quite the risky scroll. I would love to be able to browse c/asklemmynsfw at my in-laws without worrying about shoulder surfing!

Nothing in recent post history bothers me. So I guess I think you don't need to add to the rules. The "AMA nsfw" is amusing as long as it's not only thing that gets posted.
